Volume Three Hundred Ninety-Four

A duck, a mudder, and a little gratuitous Amanda Dufner.

Hittin' the LinksFor what should have been a down week in TV golf, the Independence Day weekend gave us some pretty compelling story lines. Major winners prevailed in the end. But a lot of people watching the Greenbrier Classic were undoubtedly rooting for the other guy.

This week is a double major week. The women of the LPGA are playing the Ricoh Women’s British Open at Royal Birkdale in Lancashire, and the Champions Tour is in Oklahoma for the U.S. Senior Open Championship. In non-major category, the PGA Tour is in Illinois for the John Deere Classic, while the Euro Tour has the Scottish Open where Phil Mickelson is the defending champion. And the following week is the British Open Championship.

We love this time of year. Let’s hit the links.

Hole #1: He Wins More Than Just Majors
Angel Cabrera shot 64-64 on the weekend to claim the Greenbrier Classic by two strokes over George McNeill, who shot 61 on Sunday. The win is Cabrera’s first non-major victory on the PGA TOUR. [Link]

Hole #2: Les Tres Jacques
Graeme McDowell comes from eight-shots back in a downpour to retain his French Open title at Le Golf National, edging Kevin Stadler by a stroke. Overnight leader Stadler had a birdie putt on 18 to win but missed, and then missed the par putt. [Link]

Hole #3: Need a Little Summer Place?

Hole #4: Favorite Golfer of Everyone at #18 Green?
It’s Bud Cauley, of course. When Cauley holed out on the par-three final hole of the Greenbrier Classic on Sunday, he made everyone around the green some green&Hellip; $100 to be exact. Cauley’s hole-in-one put the exclamation point on his closing round 64. [Link]

Hole #5: Old Ball Coach Unbeaten
Steve Spurrier claims that in 30 years of golf he has never lost to one of his players. How can that be possible? Well, he only gives them one shot for starters. [Link]

Hole #6: Golf Tricks
If the first one is real, it’s the most astounding trick shot ever. Let’s just say, we have our doubts. [Link]

Hole #7: Paparazzi
You can’t really complain about the paparazzi if you and you friends are the ones posting the pictures. It looks like the Dufners enjoyed the holiday weekend. [Link]

Hole #8: Hazard
A golf course employee rescued a man after his minivan plunges into one of the course’s water hazards. [Link]

Hole #9: Heavy Heart
George McNeill shot a 61 on Sunday and, as it turned out, would have won the Greenbrier Classic if not for Cabrera’s hole out for eagle on 13. McNeill’s thoughts though were elsewhere. His older sister Michele was gravely ill. There was nothing that anyone could do. He spent the round thinking of her, and joylessly making birdies. Following the round, he learned that she’d passed away just before his tee time. [Link]
