Indonesia Open Coverage: Rounds 1 and 2

Thunderstorms have put an early end to the second round at the Indonesia Open, but that’s not what put an end to Colin Montgomerie’s chances of making the field in his 14th straight Masters.

Montgomerie sits at -3 (the projected cut line) and is in jeopardy of missing the cut and not making the field for the 2005 Masters. Colin needed a win in this event to move into the top 50 in the world to secure a spot in this year’s first major.

Montgomerie had one birdie and one bogey in the 13 holes he completed before rain cancelled the second round. Monty sits 11 shots off the lead and has a lot to think about on Friday night. When he returns to his ball on Saturday morning, he faces a shot where his ball came to rest on the bank of a greenside bunker.

India’s Arjun Atwal and Irishman Michael Hoey opened the first-round of the inaugural Indonesia Open with eight-under-par 62s. Atwal has won two joint Asian/European-sanctioned events, the 2002 Singapore Masters and the 2003 Malaysian Open.

Hoey had an impressive first round with eight birdies and an eagle, after starting his day two-over after four holes played. Both Atwal and Hoey were a couple of the fortunate players to complete their rounds. Hoey won the 2001 Amateur Champion and played on the same Walker Cup Team as Luke Donald, Nick Dougherty and Graeme McDowell.

The first round had a two-hour delay due to rain, which left 57 golfers to finish their rounds on Friday. One of the players to finish his round on Friday morning was Thailand’s Thaworn Wiratchant.

After two rounds, Wiratchant is the leader in the clubhouse, firing his second straight 63 to put him at -14. Wiratchant awoke at 5am to complete his remaining 6 holes on Friday. While he might be tired after the round, he didn’t show any fatigue during his second round, carding 6 birdies and an eagle. He stands one shot in front of Bel gium’s Nicolas Colsaerts who fired a second round 62 to sit at -13.

Monty’s Ryder Cup teammate Paul McGinley shot a second round 68 which left him just inside the cut mark. McGinley played 23 holes on Friday after his round was cut short on Thursday. On Wednesday evening, he and Montgomerie attended a tournament dinner where they presented a $100,000 check raised by the European Tour for the tsunami relief fund.
