Singh and Renwick on the Rocks

Vijay Singh and caddy Dave Renwick are reported to be having troubles that might lead to a breakup.

Vijay Singh and caddy Dave Renwick have had a good year – Renwick has been with Singh for 7 of his 9 victories. However, reports are running rampant that there is a growing tension between the two.

Back at the Tour Championship in Atlanta, Renwick was replaced after two rounds due to a supposed hip injury by Vijay’s fitness trainer, Joey Diovisalvi, who caddied for the other two Singh victories. Yet Renwick was spotted at the course on Saturday morning. Some speculation suggests that the two had a heated difference of opinion on the practice range at East Lake after Singh carded a 3-over 73 in the second round. “Vijay told Dave he was going to bench him for Saturday, and Dave said, ‘In that case, you can bench me permanently’,” it was alleged by an unnamed source.

Said Singh of Renwick last month:

Dave is a long-time friend. He was my caddie for three years before and is just such a hard worker. He’s there and is very grumpy most of the time but in a good way. He’s all for me and he doesn’t want anyone to beat me, which is a very good thing to have. And he’ll let you know if you’re doing something wrong. I mean, he will cut you up, give you a talk that sometimes it’s not good or at the wrong time. But he’s a very good clubber. When you ask him a question, he’s very definite. He’s not going to hold back.

But the caddie is as good as the player, and I proved it twice this year; my trainer caddied for me on two occasions and I won both times. I’ve won six times with Davy this year and most of them have been large tournaments. I’m pretty happy with his work and I guess he’s happy with what he’s been rewarded with.

After Singh was reminded that Renwick once dumped a player instead of the other way around, he shot back, “Well, he’d be sorry if he did (that to me).”

The tension doesn’t seem to have an immediate effect, however, as Singh has said that Renwick will be on the bag at the Grand Slam of Golf in Hawaii later this month.
