Bunker’s Dozen: July 2006

Major championships shake the foundation for this month’s Bunker’s Dozen!

Thrash TalkThe month of June was much better than May when it comes to quality golf. The PGA Tour and LPGA Tour held their respective second major championships of the season in June, and both came down to the last shot. They left impressions on the golf world and the Bunker’s Dozen.

Will Lefty’s collapse at the 72nd hole at Winged Foot hurt his ranking? Was Geoff Ogilvy’s U.S. Open win enough to vault him to the top spot? Also, what effect did the LPGA’s second major have on the list? These questions and more will be answered in the latest edition of the Bunker’s Dozen. I hope you all enjoy!

1
Geoff Ogilvy

Geoff Ogilvy takes the top spot this month after winning the U.S. Open at Winged Foot and vaulting to second on the PGA Tour money list.

2
Phil Mickelson

Phil Mickelson had his chance to win the U.S. Open but finished in a tie for second; Lefty is still ranked first on the PGA Tour money list.

3
Lorena Ochoa

Lorena Ochoa continued her solid play with two top-10 finishes last month. Ochoa still sits atop the LPGA Tour money list.

4
Vijay Singh

Vijay Singh found his game in time to win the Barclays Classic and finish in a tie for sixth at Winged Foot.

5
Se Ri Pak

Se Ri Pak won the LPGA’s second major championship of 2006 in a playoff over Karrie Webb.

6
Karrie Webb

Karrie Webb lost the LPGA Championship in a playoff but maintained second place on the LPGA Tour money list.

7
FedEx Cup

FedEx Cup continues to get plenty of mixed reactions from the golf world. Actually, they’re mostly bad, but I’m trying to at least pretend to be impartial.

8
Carl Pettersson

Carl Pettersson won The Memorial for his second victory in less than a year. The furrowed bunkers didn’t seem to bother him much at all.

9
Paul Casey

Paul Casey won the Johnnie Walker Championship for his second European Tour win of the year; also finished 15th at U.S. Open.

10
Ben Curtis

Ben Curtis won the Booz Allen Classic to prove he isn’t a one-hit wonder on the PGA Tour. Two-hit wonder, maybe…

11
Michelle Wie

Michelle Wie finished in a tie for fifth at the LPGA Championship and nearly qualified for the men’s U.S. Open. If only she could have putted well.

12
Jim Furyk

Jim Furyk tied for second at Winged Foot and sits in third on the PGA Tour money list. Next month he’ll defend his title at the Western Open.

13
Colin Montgomerie

Colin Montgomerie double-bogeyed the 72nd hole at Winged Foot to miss playoff by one shot. Monty’s major championship woes continue.

Dropped Out: Jay Haas, Brett Wetterich, Tim Herron, Winged Foot, Tiger Woods, Trevor Immelman, Adam Scott, Jeff Maggert, and Meena Lee.

  1. Odd that Winged Foot would drop OUT of the rankings since it actually hosted the major. 😛 Ben Curtis? Really? Who cares. I think Winged Foot got a little more press in June than Ben freakin’ Curtis.

  2. Where’s Annika?? Or Newport Country Club? (Perhaps on the July list??) 🙂
