There should be some skill required to hit long and strait drives. You shouldn't be able to buy your game. It should be based on skill at all levels. And I'm sure that there will be companies that make non-conforming clubs for those that just want to go out and hit long and strait drives into every par 4 to show how manly they are or how much they can afford to spend on a quick and unsporting addition to their game.

2006 will be the year of leveling out as drivers already bumping their heads on the 460cc limit have no room to grow.

Unbelievable. So the USGA is just going to shoot down any further technological advances? Great leadership. Way to "protect the game," you pompous combovers. Do something that will impact the miniscule number of scratch golfers in the world, and limit the options available to average golfers.

Oh, wait. Most average golfers stopped caring what the USGA had to say a long time ago. Never mind.

I can just see it now. Company X discovers that hardened marshmallow fluff is the perfect material for a super-forgiving new driver design. Within a month, the USGA will have a new "proposed" rule to eliminate marshmallow fluff and restore the sanctity of the game. Innovation? Who needs it? Let's protect par!

Morons. They are writing one of the last chapters in the history of the USGA with such stupdity. It will be right before the chapter on how the USGA tried to kill tournament golf with the US Open setups.

This is getting ridiculous. They want to limit the amount of resistance to twisting? They want to protect the difficulty of hitting the ball straight? If the USGA continues to worry only about the pro game and devise rules that make golf harder for weekend players, ultimately weekend players will decide to ignore the USGA's rules. These guys are divorced from reality and will soon render their own organization irrelevant to weekend players.
