What about "Sobby", the only picture I got from her are two interviews in which she ended up crying and sobbing. You need to be mature enough to handle all sorts of pressure and conditions in the top level of golf, even Wie hasn't lost composure despite being DQ'd in her LPGA debut or missing 'n' cuts in the men's tourneys (and I'm not a big fan of hers).

"A big part of what makes Inkster so tough is her work ethic. 'When you play a practice round with her, it's the longest round you'll ever play because she has to chip from everywhere,' Patty Sheehan says. 'That's why her nickname is 'Chip.' "

"Nancy Lopez' seldom-spoken nickname is Slowpez, which she earned in the early 1990s when she had her caddie line up all her shots, including putts."

Nancy Lopez played golf since childhood, as did Julie Inkster. Both without nicknames, as far as I know. --Just a thought.

Morgan has been playing golf since she's a little girl.
By now someone should have given her a nickname.

Wie was given her nickname by Tom Lehman and Paula Creamer got the "Pink Panther" from Casey Wittenberg.

If these guys noticed something in these players, who is to say that the average person doesn't see a certain spark that goes overlooked?

I still say it's a good idea.

Nicknames are not invented for the purpose of making a nickname. The reason they catch on is because they just happen and become an endearment - even if they began as subtly derogatory. Names like "Bones" or "Lumpy" fit that mode.

Some nicknames begin as inocuously as having a teacher create a laugh by mispronouncing a name on the first day of class.

Some names like "Big Easy" and "Merry Mex" speak for themselves and work because they work.

Some like "Great White Shark" show little creativity but catch on anyway, especially when they become an appearal logo.

Nicknames tend to be more common in men from childhood to adult. Women or girls seem less easy to tag, or less inclined to enjoy nicknames.

Artificial contrivances never catch on, regardless of how much the media (where superficiality runs high), wants them to: "Wiesy", the "Mechanic", "Wierzy", "Zinger", "El Nino", "Boom-Boom" and "Calc" fade quickly away ...thankfully.
