mallet vs. blade

I like the look of a mallet at set up but the pure feel of a blade. I'd like to hear your philosophy.

I'm much the same way. Although I love the instant alignment that mallets provide, for me they're just not accurate. Even with the steel faced ones, their extra weight leads to excess movement during my stroke which in turn, causes all kinds of other problems.

IMHO, there's nothing like a pure steel blade for speed control. I don't think any other material provides the same feedback. For me speed control is 99% of putting since the line the ball travels depends on speed. Aligning a putter on a given line is no good unless the speed is going to match!

I use a Yonex steel blade {8802 copy}made for Phill years ago and still love it.I also in my basement putting range have a original Ray Cook M1 mallet with the false front plate same as Nancy Lopez made famous that might be the squarest putter ever made and I practice with it on allignment.

I'm a mallet man myself. Never really had problems with the speed - I find that the extra weight lets me make a smoother stroke, knowing that enough energy is going into the ball to get it going (and on-line).

I'm also putting with a mallet currently, the Nike OZ (http://www.tgw.com/customer/category/product.jsp?SUBCATEGORY_ID=4343) . I like the way it looks and it's easy for me to grab out of the bag if I hook my finger around the curved part. :) That link only shows the midlength ones, but you get the idea.

Back when I bought the OZ, I came close to buying a Scotty Cameron Newport, but couldn't justify the price. Though it did feel great in the hand, it was hard to get a feel for putting with it in the store. I'd love to see a more traditional green-type surface in these places where you can truly putt around.

Well, I've gone and bought another putter. This time I'll be recieving a Scotty Cameron Newport 2 within a couple of weeks. I'll keep you posted on how it turns out. I'm fairly certain that I'll sell the Mezza Monza in the next few weeks. I just love the look and feel of a blade. I can see the line so easily with a blade and just as importantly feel the distance. I'm not too sure why I'm on the hunt for another putter (chalk it up to equipment lust) when that old Titleist Dead Center is working for me so well. No three puts today or yesterday.

Congrats on the new putter, I just got my SC newport for x-mas, and I love it to death! I think this may be the best investment I've made in my golf career. Didn't believe a putter could be made so well!

I used to have and oddesy twoball for about a year but now I have a scotty cameron newport beach and I will never use a mallet again I just love the feel of a traditional style putter to a mallet and I just like the look better.

I have the original OZ. It looks slightly different.

But I think what I like best about it is the feel from the insert. A buddy had a Ping that had an insert and I really liked the feel of it, so wanted to get something similar. Putting is probably the least of my troubles on the course, so I'd say that's a compliment for the OZ. :)
