View Full Version : Question on hitting a hybrid out of rough

I've you're supposed to hit the ball with a hybrid the same as you would an iron, i.e., same ball position and hitting down swing.
But what about when you're in the rough? When I hit an iron out of the rough, I open the club face so the face squares when the grass grabs the hosel. I also try to use a steeper swing.
Does the same apply to a hybrid like the TaylorMade Rescues?
Thanks!

Not sure about the TM Rescues...if my memory is correct they have larger "wood-like" heads.
I do go after rough shots with a steeper blow. I've never opened the face, though.
Rough is a beast no matter what you do, I'm afraid.

Not sure either about the Taylormade Rescues.
I usually just hit it how I normally would. I havent had any big problems yet with doing it this way.

How much are you opening the face? I'd be pretty cautious about this because it's hard to gauge the varying thickness of the rough. I'd think it would be kinda hard to not leave everything to the right.
Like you and others said though, I'm definitely steeper on a shot from the rough as well, whether it's with the hybrid or any iron.

The rough will grab a hold of any club, although it is reduced in hybrids. The most common shot out of the rough ends up to the left of where you are aiming because more of the club usually rests towards the hosel. So, you have the right setup. What you want to do is try to keep as little grass between the club and the ball as you can, which of course means hitting it at a steeper angle. Try and take the club back at a steep angle, and down at a steep angle, and you should get out of the rough fairly easily. Although, the shot should be higher up in the air because you hit down on it more. Hope this helps!

I hit it dead square. Using hybrids instead of irons is to prevent the grass from closing the clubface. Don't have problems with the face of a hybrid closing in the rough. I make a powerful swing and make sure I hit the ball first. If it's a bit deep, I'll go a bit steeper to aviod as much grass as possible.

Thanks for the tips, all.

hybrids are supposed to be easier to hit out of the rough than regular irons, ive found this to be true as they slice through the thick grass much easier and dont lose nearly as much distance as opposed to a regular iron in the rough. I use my hybrids a lot and i try to put them further forward in my stance, just seems more comfortable to me and I tend to choke up a bit on every club, again it just feels more comfortable than gripping it at the end of the club, might explain why I dont hit my irons quite as far as i would like. The hybrids have longer shafts being graphite so I still hit them pretty far as compared to my other irons. I think hybrid clubs are great, I wouldnt have much of a chance to hit long approach shots without them. Trying to hit a regular 3 or 4 iron would be very difficult for me and out of the rough I'd be very inconsistent, shots would be all over the place and mostly not very far as I would chunk them a lot.
