View Full Version : How Much are your Balls Worth?

I typically get my Pro V1xs for about $39.99 or, occasionally, $34.99.

I'm far, far too cheap to play the Pro V1x's. If I find one, I tend to like them, but they're obviously not in the best condition when I find them.

Normally, I play Wilson Jack Longs (they're Super Cheap!) but most recently I've found the new(?) Nike Double C. I bought a dozen before my Thanksgiving rounds, and they had excellent distance and good to great feel.

At $15.00/dozen at K-Mart, both sides of me are happy.

For now, I'm just paying around $6/dozen for used balls at the local course. It makes the decision not to go hiking around the woods looking for lost balls a lot easier.

You know, Aaron, if you spend a little more money - again, the Wilson Jacks I get are around $15 for 15 balls - you'll get a LOT better performance out of your golf balls.

There's a Golf Magazine article I was reading not too long ago (dead tree version) that talked about the effects even a little exposure had on golf balls. Given that the used bucket are balls the grounds crew picks up, they're of questionable quality.

The other option is the Big Box Sam's Clubs/Costcos of the world, and Wal-Mart. All three have really good deals on new balls. My personal best find was the 36-ball "bucket" of TopFlite XL 2000's for $19. That's getting awfully close to the $6/doz. price, and that's for new balls.

(And, I'll avoid making the comment about how playing a TopFlite XL is like hitting a rock; if you're comparing to the used bucket, they're worth it.)

Lastly, there are the X-Outs. Cosmetic and slight dimple differences at this point in your golf career won't matter and again, they're not reconditioned or used balls.

Shop around a little. You'll be surprised at what you can find, and will probably end up with a dozen or two extra yards off the tee.

Now that's some good advice, Braz. I have TopFlite XL 2000 that goes everywhere with me. It was the first ball I ever played a round of golf with. I definitely don't need top quality yet, so I think I will check out some of the bargains you mentioned. The ones I am used to using do often take some funny wobbles in the air.

I think it's important to be careful with golf balls. Hitting rock balls can cause problems, I think: you're afraid to hit them thin, which introduces some other problems (hitting at the ball instead of through it, etc.). Plus, I think the joy of playing is taken down a notch when you feel like you've broken your club four times a round. :-)

Just be careful with those hard ones. If you're going to play cheap balls, also consider some ladies balls. The fact that do well when you swing slowly is a benefit - it can get your swing to be a bit more controllable.

The Precept Laddie has long been a favorite among even low-handicappers, and I find them for $19.99/24 (so $10/doz). I played some when the winter got chilly up here and they still felt soft, went nearly as far as my Pro V1x, and spun almost as much. Pretty impressive really.

And the "LADDIE" stamp is more maroon than pink. :-)

Hear, hear, and I wish I had remembered about the Laddie. I still remember giving one of my friends a hard time for playing the Precept Lady, and then Precept realized just how many golfers wanted the long, low-compression ball for better feel around the greens. If you can find two dozen Laddies for $20, buy at least four dozen. You'll love them, I guarantee.

I played the SoLo's and, in my experience with two dozen, I thought they were more prone to side-spin.

(Based off of the number of hooks and slices I hit with those, compared with the Wilson Jacks, Laddies and Nike MoJo and Double C balls I also played over the past six months...)

I'll be curious to hear what you think of them...

I'll be sure to report back. Maybe I'll even do a review and put it over on TST. Of course, this all depends on me being able to even *tell* that I'm using a different ball. :-D We'll see.

I'm with you on being able to tell, but in the case of the DT SoLo's, there was no question for me. There was a clear case of... something that caused my slice to get worse or, in what must have been a miracle, actually caused me in some cases to hook the ball.

I never hook the ball.

::shrug:: Go figure.

Since I work for a golf course, I get my balls free when I'm out on the range. Its great! Nevertheless, the balls I use would cost $40 plus, since I play ProV1x's and Hogan Apex Blacks.

Not too many people I know have gone with the Hogans. How do they compare to the V1x?

Well, the Hogan Red is just a little softer than the ProV1, and spins about the same. That is, just a little too much for me. I create too much side spin that way. The Hogan Black is very comparable to the ProV1x. Same feel, trajectory, spin, etc. Almost like twins. The only difference is that the Black is more of the off white of the ProV1, rather than the bright white of the ProV1x.

Hope that answers your question!

That way you might find the answer. But hey, like I said, you'll find it is almost exactly like a ProV1x. Try it if you don't believe me.

Been working so haven't been around much...honey do's AND work...never ends.

Anyway, I did a non-scientific experiment when determining which ball to select for my Top Flite Staff Agreement for 2004. I used the Pro V1x as the "control" and took a sleeve of the Strata Tour Ace and a sleeve of the Hogan Apex Tour Black to our first hole. My experiment consisted of playing 5 holes and hitting 3 drives on each hole with each ball (except for #4 which was a Par 3). After hitting the drives, I gathered the balls and hit one approach shot with each from the 150 (8-iron) and two approach shots from the 100 (my sand wedge distance). The results:

Tee shots, the Hogan Apex Tour was routinely about 10-15 yards longer than the Pro V1x and the Strata Tour Ace was approximately the same distance as the Pro V1x.

Approach shots: The Hogan stuck like a cat and was about a club longer than the other two balls. The Strata Tour Ace spun just about the same as the Pro V1x and flew the same distance.

Once again, this was a NON-scientific experiment as I was swinging the club and obviously every swing is not the same (although I try).

Definitely good to know. I've got six dozen Pro V1x (Titleist made a shipping error and sent me 3-dozen personalized Titleists a second time), but I'll give the Hogan a try sometime soon.

Intriguing...

I get the Nike Tour Accuracy (Tiger's old ball) for $10 a dozen - brand new, so I play them a lot. I play th ProV1 a lot, but I don't pay for them. I also play the new top of the time Ben Hogan ball, and I like it. And for good measure I also play the Nike One series often. I don't pay for any of them because I always seem to either win them or receive them as gifts.

Folks, check out this site http://www.lostgolfballs.com/Details.asp?Brand=Titleist&Model=Pro%20V1&GroupPage=1

LostGolfBalls.com I read the customer reviews and figured what the hell, Ill try 2 dozen ProV1's (2nd Quality) and they were like brand new. I examined these 24 balls closely and I swear I found 1 super small scuff on 1 ball only, the rest I couldnt tell they were played more than 1 single shot. Note I said 2nd quality, they have a first quality that they claim is perfcect but I found the 2nd's to be just perfect. $18 a dozen + shipping...I'll never buy new balls again, ever. Oh and there was zero noticable difference in distance, spin etc. as I assume they came from water shots at venues like Sawgrass or other quailty courses that collect thousands of ProV1's on a weekely basis.

I have the Golf Digest MBNA Mastercard. I accumulate points which I redeem for golf balls. Consequently, I don't buy balls ( unless, you consider redeeming points for balls a purchase, which, from an economist's point of view, it is ). For my game, in cold weather I use a low compression distance ball, such as the Titleist DT Solo. In the blistering summers, here, I like the Titleist NXT Tour, which I find better around the greens, especially for distance control on putts. Both my swing speed, as well as my pecuniary sensibilities prevent me from considering the ProV1 and its ilk.

BTW, you can go to the Golf Digest website to apply for the MBNA card. I've had good luck with that company for several years and the redeemable points are a bonus. Hope this helps.

I pay 31.99$ plus a 40% discount at golf galaxy for the 05 nike platinums. They're real nice. I think they spin better, more druable, whiter, longer, and easier to control then the prov1. They say you have better control because it is designed for shots with "variable loads", like I said, distance control is amazing.

I've played the Pro V 1x for the last year or so, and love it. I accidentally bought, or was given by the cashier , a box of Pro V 1's, and didn't look at the box until I got to the course. I have played them for 2 rounds, and have had marginally longer, and MUCH straighter drives. My little mistake has lead to a ball switch.:-)

In response to the question which i failed to answer I pay 17.99 from Golfsmith for brand new Hogan Apex Tours. Its a 4 piece ball. They are logo overruns so if you dont mind a small logo on your ball (barely noticeable, I sift through the bin for about 10 minutes hand picking balls) then youve got a great ball at a great price, and they are extremely durable, I can get a full round in with one ball which we all know isnt easy.

I'll be sticking with the BlackMax's for a while since I just ordered 3 dozen from TGW.com. They're typically $40 (ok, $39.99) but only $29.99 on TGW with no tax, and shipping is free over $75. I've heard that this ball is going away so I decided to stock up. My last BlackMax made it 2 1/2 rounds with only minimal wear, although it did feel slightly harder than the new one that replaced it after it went to a watery grave.

I play what i find in the woods. Since i joined a private club, i play much better balls. Rich people don't chase their ProVs in the woods.

I did buy a dozen MC Lady Precepts the other day for $10. Nice ball for the money.

Didn't Golf Digest do an article lately that said the best bargain in golf is the cheap golf ball? The performance difference between a two piece ball that cost around $20 and the 4 piece ball that cost $40 is not 100%. Also most golfers don't have the swing speed to fully realize the advantages of the high end balls.

The old nike platinums are one of the most scientifically sound balls and very cheap. 30 buks and a lot better than the prov1, i think. Distance Control is superb, the urethene cover is very durable, the most durable ive used in premium balls, its also the farthest, and straigtest thanks to low compression. Check the charts, this balls is sound.

Call me cheap but during the summer when I don't have any serious matches and am just practicing for the sake of practicing, than I usually play recycled ProV1's that I get from my local Golf Galaxy for $36 for 3 dozen. Sure they may have some wear and tear on them but they keep me in the rhythm with the balls that I use for serious competition and they are quite a steal for having just a few scratches on them. Overall for a high schooler like me, its the best way for me to go.

the golf ball is just as important as your clubs... its part mental part reality. I can't play the ProV1 because its so soft my spin rates go way up, hence why I play the ProV1x... but to take golf seriously and use cheap balls is a contridiction to the game...

if you don't lose balls then make the investment into a 3 piece ball

I decided to try out a less expensive ball today (actually, two different balls)... the Bridgestone e5 and the Srixon AD333. The Srixons go for about $20, and the Bridgestones go for about $25.

Shot well today, but here are some of my impressions:

Neither of these balls feel great around the greens, though the Bridgestone was definitely more well-behaved. The Srixon wanted to jump off the wedge when trying to skip it up onto the green. The Bridgestone seemed to check up a little better, but neither compares to the ProV1's or BlackMax's I usually play. I didn't care for the feel of either ball off the putter... they felt... I don't know... hollow? Both rolled true though, and I finished the day with only 31 putts, which ain't bad for me.

Off the tee, I actually liked 'em both, but for different reasons. Both felt pretty good off the driver, with the edge going to the AD333 for me. Both went a long, long way. Popped a three-biller with the e5, and a 285 (into the wind) with the AD333. I faded the ball (my natural shape) better with the e5, but the AD333 stayed on line better when I got sloppy with my swing.

Speaking of which, neither ball is great in the wind, as they both launch pretty high and tend to balloon. Edge definitely goes to premium balls in this respect. Had a SW balloon on me from 105 out with the AD333... ended up landing around 80 yards. Annoying. I had a 140 yard par 3 that I usually hit with 9 iron, into the wind with the e5 it went about 125. Needed an 8 iron to get it there.

But you know what? I've been pretty erratic all year, and losing ProV1's and BlackMax's in the junk has really stretched the budget. I'm thinking I might just put both of these into play this year. I kinda dig 'em, even with their shortcomings.

I'm lucky enough to live near a ritzy private course where members all play 3 piece performace balls and never bother looking for their shanks... get a backpack, few hours in the woods and a little elbow grease and you have some nice relatively new balls

I typically pay 39.99 a dozen for HX.Tours plus tax. That puts me over the 40.00 mark so I voted as such.

Konrad,

I don't buy used golf balls mainly because it's the same arguement as I was having with someone about knockoff clubs; that being said, I don't ever really have to worry or make comparisons about quality or consistency when I'm taking them out of the box myself.

Next time, phrase it as "I feel that paying 4 or 3 dollars a ball is stupid." The way you wrote it, you called everyone who buys new balls stupid.

And, as SuSponte has already said, there are benefits to buying new balls. I always buy new balls and give old ones away or put them in the shag bag. Maybe it's a confidence thing. Maybe it's a performance thing. Maybe I don't like having to wonder whether I'll get lines or other markings on my balls. Maybe it's something else.

There are reasons to buy new balls. "Stupidity" is rarely one of them.

Konrad
August 28th, 2006, 10:58 am
Heh. Most of those golf balls have been hit twice or three times. Believe me, if I thought that it affected anything, I wouldn't buy them. The only person who might notice a difference is the professionals. As soon as you hit a golf ball once, it's used. Do you also switch golf balls every three holes because it might be "worn" out? I doubt it. And, if you do, you're rich enough to not care anyways :-D

Maxfli A3 which had a great review a year ago (best buy) http://www.golfballs101.com/maxfli-a3.aspx is now selling for $9.95 a dozen at Dicks Sporting Goods. I have played many different balls and depending on your handicap the difference may not warrant the most expensive balls.

Just recently switched from pro v1 to pro v1x after extensive launch monitor and range testing. I always was led to believe that you had to have extremely high swing and ball speed to use the x model but found out thru proper testing that it was all b.s. My driver swingspeed is only 101 mph average and the x model has helped me decress my handicap by 1.2 strokes.
The x model does feel a little harder but seems to help tighten dispersion and still holds greens. Am going to test a ust frequency filtered putter shaft to see if I can get a softer feeling off the putter face. Great ball for my game but the competition is so close these days it's hard to say that one ball is any better then the next. My opinion and advice would be to test the balls your interested in on a launch monitor and on the range and use what fits your game best regardless of price.

When I get a dozen I get Callaway HX Tour's for around $39.99. But most of the time I just get 3 balls for about $15, and then when I lose them I get another 3. I think I've only ever got a dozen Callaway's once. Anyway great quality balls, especially for the winter, the roll they get is amazing for the winter.

I'm usually a Pro-V1x guy. I had to switch to the Wilson Staff Tx4 balls recently because of an unfortunate 5-week layoff from golf (too much business travel). I had to rediscover my golf swing and began losing balls more than before. The Wilson balls go for about $30 through a golf retailer and they're 4-piece. They're definately no ProV or Callaway/Nike, but they do perform pretty comparable. I noticed I got a few yards more off the tee and a tad more spin than the ProV1x. It's a good tour type ball at a more affordable rate. I've since gone back to the X's and hopefully never have to look back.

the golf ball is just as important as your clubs... its part mental part reality. I can't play the ProV1 because its so soft my spin rates go way up, hence why I play the ProV1x... but to take golf seriously and use cheap balls is a contridiction to the game...

if you don't lose balls then make the investment into a 3 piece ball

For most serious mid to higher handicappers, that is just not true. To really appreciate one ball over another requires solid contact on a consistent basis. It makes no difference what you hit if its on the heel or toe. For most "serious" middies golfers I think they would come out better with a distance ball over a spin ball. Few people I see at any level can really impart the show stopping spin we see on TV no matter what ball they play and further distance is much more of an asset.

I've tried Titleist DT So/Lo ($40), Callaway HX Hot ($40) Srixon AD333 ($21) & Srixon Soft Feel ($20) but late this year i tried the Noodle Ice (White, not the colored ones) and really liked them. I hit them just as good, and i like the clear look. ($19). I'm not a great golfer, & the more expensive balls don't seem to react any differently than the cheaper ones for me. Maybe as i improve i will notice a difference. :hmm:

$39.99 for Pro V1 or V1x new - I always play new, I've tried used balls and didn't like the inconsistency. Some of the balls can be water logged or weathered. Around the greens there isn't a better ball IMO. When it's wet up here in the NW I play Nike TA2 LNG since it doesn't make us much of a difference but in the summer, PRO V1's definitely. I've tried the Nike One Platinum - nice ball but I still like Pro V1's better.

i've been using the nike ignite for the past couple months and i've been happy with them thus far. it's the first ball that i've been consistently using (using whatever prior to that) and it's made a big difference in my game. so much so that i dropped about 5 strokes off my handicap within the first 5 weeks. i've never tried the pro V1's as they carry a pretty steep sticker price. i'm going to get fitted for a driver in the spring and will get fitted for a ball. has anyone tried both the ignite and the pro v1? i'm really wonder how they compare.

Recentlywork with Jim (Tuson Pin Club Fitter) on the launch monitor He said I was playing an incorrect ballfor me (Pro V 1X). He suggested a softer ball for those of us with slower swing speeds. I tried the Bridgestone 330 S and hit it the same, maybe a little father, distance. I cannot play a hard ball such as Top Flights or Pinnicale:-P

December 9th, 2006, 09:09 pm
I was told the same thing. If you have a slow to mid swing speed, you cannot compress the higher end balls enough to "get" to their core, and take advantage of their capabilities. Unless you think it's a cool factor to be seen hitting Pro V1's, into the bush, it's probably a waste of money. The high end balls here in Manitoba (center of Canada for our American friends) are about $60 dz. The Srixon AD333, Soft Feel, or Maxfli Ice, are all around $20 dz. My cool factor is not that expensive, but for lower handicap players, there is no doubt an advantage to a better ball.

I switched from ProV1's to the B330's about half way through last season and haven’t regretted it one bit. I was looking for a ball that had the feel like the ProV, but with not quite so much spin, and a smaller price tag.

I play the B330S if I'm looking for a little more spin or the B330 if the greens are too soft or its windy etc.

Like you I haven’t noticed any loss in distance, but I do see a spin difference between the B330 and the ProV1. Some times I would spin the ProV too much, and even though its fun to watch the ball back up 20ft, it just means you have a longer putt home most of the time. From what I've seen the B330S backs up about 1/3 of the distance the ProV was.

Plus the money I'm saving over the ProV's isn’t too shabby either

I play whatever I can find--it typically belongs in someone else's shag bag, and I'll play it with pride.

I spend almost nothing on balls, and I'm one that you find scrounging around in the deep rough for lost balls. I'll come back 5 minutes later with a pocket full of mangy, gnarled, decrepit old balls.

I play whatever good ball I can get for 20$-30$ if I have to buy them. I had a friend who worked at a high class country club get me pro v1's and I'd give him pro v1x's that I would find at my club.

My game isn't good enough that I can say I will hit the wedge 10 feet past the pin and spin it back. As a matter of fact most of the time when I hit it past the pin it sticks and when I hit it short it spins back. Thats why I was buying Hogan Hawks for a while and now I've been getting Maxfli Black Max's. Its all good. Last week I was playing DT Solo's and spining them back off of wedges. Never thought that would happen.

I buy DT Solo's and ProV 1's from Knet.
Used golf balls.

I buy the "Grade A" balls, which I can't really tell apart from the "Mint" balls.
I buy about 7 dozen for $100.00 and that easily gets me through the year. The best way for me to describe how they look, is that: You can tell they are not new, but you can't tell that they are used either.

Almost every ball has a logo on it of some sort. Since I have used this website, I laugh a little on the inside when I see people paying retail.

There is a 130-140 yard par 3 at a local course with a pond in between the green and tee box. It is about 2.5-3.5 feet deep and I go in once or twice a year. With about 3 hours work I usually get between 800-1000 balls. I'll never hit 'em all but I keep going because I get about 60 pro v1, and about 150-200 other pretty good balls (titleist, nike, etc.). The rest are just for hitting at geese and stuff. :-P

For me it really depends on how I'm playing. Since I live in Montana, I don't golf for about 5 months over the winter (there's still snow on the course now). Every year I go from hitting a high draw at the end of the season to an awefull slice at the beginning of the next year. So I always start out using a low spin ball (Topflite Superstraight) for the first month. It helps me control the side spin, and costs a lot less to slice the ball into the woods. But once I'm back in rythym I play either PVIs or Nike One Platinums. I lose distance compared to the Topflights, but the high performance balls hold the green so much better!!

The price of golf balls is somewhat rediculous. I mean, why do they need to charge so much for golf balls? Now it's 45 dollars to get Pro v1's...So stupid.

I get Titleist DT SoLo's or the Srixon Soft feel, both of which are $20/per dozen...it's not too bad. You feel like your playing a good ball out on the course, yet not spending a rediculous amount.

I get free Pro v1's when I play in high school golf matches, so I get my "expensive" balls for free there. I won't be paying $45/per dozen until I am under a 5 handicap.

Golf balls are like beer......when you're in college everything tastes great. Twelve pack of Pabst and you're ready to go. You get older and start to distinguish a great difference between cheap beer and good beer.

When you start playing golf whatever's on sale at Wal-Mart or whatever you find while looking for your original ball will do just fine. Later on you realize a Top-Flite just ain't a ProV1.

I usually try to save money by buying logo overruns.

I would suggest to anyone who wants to play a better game and has a handicap of 12 or less that they visit their local Golf Shop where you are allowed to test different balls and then the computer tells you about how you hit them...how far, side spin, launch angle etc. The "higher end" balls actually do go farther and there is less spin which helps one get more distance. I tried the Callaway HX Pro and the Nike Black and both balls went 30-40 yards farther with less spin than the Top Flites and the other two piece balls. Good luck!

I play these as well, I pay about $18 / dozen CDN for them... I really like them and they are a really good quality ball for the money. I did try out a Callaway HX Tour recently and I do have to say that I noticed the difference. What a nice feel! I am not quite in control of my swing enough right now to warrant the cost of them, though, but I will put the extra cash to good use for some lessons and once I get playing better I know I will want t use a better ball. It certainly does make a difference and those touchy shots around the green... or the short iron shots and bunker shots...

not necceserilly. In order to be able to juice a ball like the nike one black or Callaway HX Tour, Titleist Pro V1, Bridgeston B330, etc, you need a fast swing speed to compress the ball.

If you cannot swing very fast, than a two piece distance ball is problably better for you.

EDIT: i see you are talking about low handicappers. most likely they should be playing a high performance urethane ball.

My roommate was giving me shit for playing with that very same ball. I simply smiled and told him "Dude, it's not a LADY, it's a LADDIE ball." (pronounced LAD-DEE) Needless to say, I won.

Now, I prefer Titleist NXT Tours, although the Pro V1's are growing on me. I can get NXT's for $3 a dozen, and Pro V1's for $6 a dozen, so it doesn't burn a hole in my wallet. I found out that a good ball actually does add 30 yards to your drive.

What I can't hit however, are any Top Flites. I'd be better off hitting a rock. I'm not particulary good with Callaway or Maxfli balls, either.

I'm not sure how good this guy's supply is, or how often he gets them - but the balls vary pretty widely in quality. Some are like brand new, others are x-outs or have scuffs. But, I got two dozen last week, and picked out the better half for the club championship today and tomorrow. Not one is an X-out or scuffy. (Although by now, it's another story, that's my fault.)

I'll check into it, though.

I am now hitting the ball a lot more consistently than a year or so back and have started to use the Srixon ZUR-S and are a great ball and helping me improve further. If I want to use a cheaper ball I cannot go past the Precept Laddie Extreme. They are long and straight (Not quite as long at the Z-URS but straighter on a miss hit) and still feel soft around the green and are dirt cheap at the moment.

With a 25 index, I try not to spend more than $10-12 per dozen. Right now I'm rotating between Maxfli Red Max [$9.99/doz at Golf Galaxy], Precept Laddie Xtreme [$19.97/2 dozen at Target] and Srixon AD-333 [$29.99/3 dozen at www.rockbottomgolf.com].

Maxfli Tour Fire's are on for $19.99 / dozen right now (CDN) so I picked up a box last week and I am impressed. I would not spend the regular $35/dozen because the NXT tour are better, but for $19.99 / dozen I do not know if these can be beat... They have a nice feel, are long, and are quite durable. I layed 16 holes with one on the weekend before I lost it and it barely had a nick on it after a lot of shots! :-[]

I apologize if this has been covered, I tried to skim through and didn't see it anywhere. Does anybody remember the Orange (I think titleist) X-outs? Maybe they were Top Flite, not sure anymore. They had a lot that were over the acceptable standards for golf balls, and just flew.

Oh, and I currently have Nike Juice and Ignite in my bag, and plan to not play them when I run out. They seem very inconsistent to me, tis probably just my swing. I'm going to try some of the e6's. I found a few on the course and was going to buy some anyway. Even though they were a bit scuffed up, they felt and responded great, can't wait to try some new ones. I tend to stay in the $25 ball range.

I used to be a firm believer in the Titleist Prov1x. I wouldn't even touch anything else. But being in college, I was low on funds one day. I bought the 2 dozen for the price of 1 special of Maxfli Revolution Solid at Wal-Mart for $16.88. I have been nothing but impressed with this golf ball. Maybe I am crazy, but I like this ball. I get the same distance off the tee as I did with the Pro v1x, but obviously less spin with my approach shots. I've used these balls for about 6 months now and plan to keep on using them.

I've tested about 30 different golf ball models...it's hard to tell them apart, once you sort them into big categories like urethane v. surlyn distance, etc.

If you want to play a bargain ball, get one of the new Top Flite models--they have 2 or 3 models, including a feel and a distance model. They have the dimple-in-dimple thingie and are advertised by that snarky ESPN guy who says "Man up" to the golfers in the commercial.

Anyway, they are very reasonably priced, and are as good or better than any ball out there in the non-urethane universe.

The ability to discern subtle differences, no doubt, tends to improve as your handicap drops.

I play Pro V1x or, when I feel like dropping down a notch slightly in quality, the TP Blacks. So, $40/dozen or so, to answer the question.

I don't play the TP Red or the Pro V1 because they're noticeably (for me) different.

1 box of B330S - 1 box of MoJo - 1 box of TaylorMade TP Black - 3 boxes od Callaway balls they sell at Walmart that are not Hex pattern ($10 a box).

Everything else is either used, refurbished, found or from a golf outing.

I love reading old threads like this and seeing what people said almost 4 years ago. Interesting that the one ball that stood the test of time was the ProV1.

This question actually has several possible answers.

1. Priceless...I'm a little suprised it took 15 posts before someone actually made a non-golf ball comment.

2. $40 + I normally use ProV1's but I get them free. My wife's uncle is a barber and trades haircuts for golf balls with a guy that picks them up at a few courses. He then gives them to me when he gets ProV's.

3. $20-30 If I'm buying them, it's in this range. Usually NXT Tours, DT Solos or Nike Juice.

Nope. Just like the Prov1x spins more than the Prov1, the Z-URC spins more than the Z-URS.

The problem for me with the Z-URC and the Prov1x is if the greens are receptive at all, I can spin them back off the green. When the greens are rock hard and you can't stop the ball, I use those.

Eric, I had always believed the ProV1 spun more too. I believe they used to spin more. Same with balls like the Srixon Z-URC as well. Apparently, in the last year or two, the manufacturers have done something that makes the core of this type of ball harder, but the cover softer. With this combination, when compressed they actually spin more. Like you, I didn't believe it at first!

I've read this a number of times in the past year, and found that in fact they do seem to spin more, at least on full shots. It has changed my ball selection. When greens are hard and fast, I now play that type of ball. When they are pretty receptive, I find on full shots with my wedges, there is so much spin I can't control them.

On the other hand, I also find with partial shots they seem to spin less, perhaps because the harder core makes them compress a little less.

I'd be happy to find additional ball spin tests and posts links if you like.

Mosy are pretty good balls, lots of Callaway HX Tours, ProV1s, ProV1xs and Bridgestone B330/B330S. Very few cheap balls (Top Flite, Pinnacle etc.)

Then a friend of mine convinced me that for consistency I should choose a ball, stick with it, and only buy new ones. I play the Srixon AD333. It is a long, staight, two piece ball. At first I found it a little hot putting but I got used to it. At $20 per dozen, I think it is a great ball. When I started playing, a friend handed me a big ol' bag of balls his kids scrounged from the local course.
There were Calloway, Taylormade, Titleist, MaxiFli, and assorted others.
So far, I am still playing from that bag. I weeded out all the scruffy ones and only use them for practicing chipping in my yard.
in the first few months, I went through quite a few of them, but I have played with one Taylormade, for three rounds. There were a few close moments when I though I had lost it, but I have recovered it each time.
(I supposed, I just jinxed myself, for my next round.)
Anyway, if my luck holds, I will probably be playing out of that bag for the rest of the year.

I've bought Wilson double dozens at tgw.com for as low as $13 during the holiday sales. I usually buy "Ball Hawk" which is a 24 pack of Top Flite logo misprinted balls from Wal Mart. The black color around the Top Flite "T" is missing. Outside of that, they look and work fine since they are brand new. I pay about $12 for 24. It is always less painful to leave a ball behind in poison ivy infested woods when it costs $.50 versus $4.00... :-\
