The new Mizuno MP-67's feel like butter to me. You would swear they are cavity backs. The ball flight seems a little higher than my old MP-37's but I'm gonna re-shaft them and see if that helps.

Hey ezmoney5150. Please do let us know what happens when you reshaft your irons. Which shaft do you have now and which one you changing to?

Right now I have True Temper Dynamic Gold S300's. Although my buddy swears by the Rifle Flighted shafts. So I was thinking about trying those. I've always used True Temper even with my Pings. (I think the JZ shaft was made by True Temper).

So Far I've just clubbed up one with my distances, which hasn't hurt me. Instead of hitting my 8 iron to 150 yards like I did with my MP-37's I just hit an easy 7 iron.

I'm one of those wacky tinkerers.

Cool. Please do let me know once you change it to rifle flighted. I am also a Dynamic Gold person but I am curious about the rifle flighted shafts. I did try with my friend's rifle shaft 6.0 (not flighted) and it really did feel SOFT at impact but I did feel that the balance of the shaft was different from the DG S300. Kind of felt lighter?? if that is the correct description although the weight of the shaft was pretty much at par with the DGs. Anyway please do let me know because I am also planning to make a new purchase of MP60 with rifle flighted as well. Thanks.

Some guys HAVE to have the forged irons. I go with what works and could care how they look. My Ping G5's are great irons if all you care about it landing the ball on the green, over and over and over (and they have a nice "feel" when you hit them right)....:hmm:

Don't you think "forged" is a bit overrated? Oh, I'm using Callaway Fusion by the way. According to Callaway, Fusion is neither cast nor forged. They claimed it to be fusion. So, is it cast or forged? I'm confused. :-\

Anyway, Fusion has very crisp sound and soft feel at impact if you hit it right, which I'm sure you will most of the time. It sounds crispier and better than my friend's Titleist 690CB. Hmm...?

I'm swinging an older set of TopFlite Tour irons. Callaway is coming to my local course on March 22nd, and I'm highly considering the new x-20's. I'm feeling all giddy inside, I can't wait...................

I've been using the Adams Ideas since late 2004. They came with the 3 and 4 hybrid and I added the 2 and 5. I couldn't be happier with them. They're regular graphite and I've regripped them with the Golf Pride Decade grips the last couple of times. I've been thinking about updating them with one of the newer sets, but not yet. I'll go to the local golf expo next month and see how the new ones feel.

I've ticked Bridgestone, but strictly speaking I use Tourstage - which is a division of Bridgestone.

They are the z101 irons, forged for great feel. I've previously used Hogan FTX's which were also forged, both great irons but the z101s take the crown for me because they are easier to hit through the set whilst still maintaining that "player's" club look that I love so much.

If anyone is in the marker for new irons I would thoroughly recommend Bridgestone and Tourstage.

I hit the Callaway X-forged, Mizuno MP 60's and the T/M R& TP's and the R7 TP's were the most forgiving and most comfortable by far.

Be careful about agreeing with GD's Editors Choices. I do believe there is some politics involved and not just club performance.

You're definately righ about that, that's why they end up with so many Callaway picks. But, in this case I personally demoed each of the irons I listed and these were the best fit for myself.

There's no doubting that T/M, as with all the leading manufacturers have great products out, but the new R7 TP irons are worth taking a look at.

Yeah, I suspected that but I just don't think the most popular magazine would do that. But who knows?

It is unfortunate if that case is true. To some like me the hot list is used as a guide to purchase new clubs. Of course I've heard that it's best to demo them yourself, but in some countries (like in here) we don't have the privileges to demo the clubs we like. Basically there are no demo clubs available I'm guessing the distributors have some kind of policies on that. There is, however, a golf exhibition twice a year, but clubs availability are limited plus you get to hit only few balls because there's a line behind you waiting for their turn. Ironic but it's true. I bought my irons (Fusion) because the good reviews I read on many websites and magazine including GD. Frankly, I hadn't demoed the irons prior to my purchase. Fortunately, everything had gone perfect and Fusion has really been to my liking ever since. It doesn't surprise me at all if Fusion has been awarded with Gold Medal 3 years in a row. It's just that good - at least for me.

GD has vast resources to rate all clubs out there. They have the manpower, the time, the equipments - all kind of shafts & heads, and most importantly - the reputation. So probably, the politic is in "Editor's Choice", like you said you know. All Gold and Silver Medal are rated appropriately, but not the Editor's Choice. Who knows?

I had been playing Golfsmith Forged Blades with DG Sensicore shafts, and I really liked them.

Then, I picked up a brand new set of TaylorMade Rac HT's and matching TaylorMade stand bag for a total of $2.64. Bought two tickets in the penny lottery at the course, and hit it!

Well, as much as I love this game and its history, I ain't going back to blades. Sorry.

I personally believe they are overated. My Pings "feel" great and I played for years with McGregor forged muscle back blades... But that's what the pros play so everyone wants that I guess.

Fusions are assemblies of cast parts, composite materials and possibly forged (don't know). All I know is they are very expensive and seem to be popular.

OK. I'm getting ready to make my life altering descision. I'm going to order my new irons in the next week or two. I was pretty set on the Titleist 775cb until I went to Golfsmith and did a Hot Stix sesion. They have you hit about 20 shots with a monitor and get a fel for your game. After that they reccomend the irons that are best for you. The Titleists were nowhere to be found. I asked the guy about them and he didn't think they would be right for me either. Even though they are more expensive than all the others that came up, he didn't try to get me to but them. That actually impressed me a little. The two that came up at the top of the list were the TaylorMade r7 and the Callaway X-20. The Mizuno MX 25 was also on the list. Normally I could just hit a dozen balls with each and pick the best. The problem is, I play +1" and 2 degrees upright. They don't have demos of those clubs in that size. Anyone out there playing these irons that has feed back? All 3 sets had perfect 5 Star feedback on Golfsmith's website.

Unfortunately you have the same problem that took me more than a month to decide. I think you have 3-GREAt clubs to choose from, amoung many others out there.

The only advise I have for you, considering you couldn't go wrong with either of them, is to go back and hit the 3-different clubs again. Whichever feels best in your hands / swing, buy them and leave the store until they come in with your specs!

Run..... Or you'll go crazy!

There is another store in the area that often has clubs in +1" and has an outdoor range. I may stop by there and check it out. They are also having their demo days this month. Unfortunately, TaylorMade and Callaway are never there the same day to do a side by side.

My big hang up is that I have a Titleist Driver, 3 Wood, 2 Hybrid, Vokey Wedge and a Scotty Putter. It would be nice to have a matching set. Then again, until they are willing to pay me and give me free clubs, I need to go with what works for me.

This isn't to say that you didn't get great advice, but just because a club costs more doesn't mean it has the same profit margin or incentives for someone to push it.

OK...I just came back from hitting some of the clubs I have been thinking about. I went to a place that has them in +1" and 2 degrees upright. The X-20's and r7's both felt good, with the nod going to the r7's. However, I also hit the Titleist 775's and they felt better than both the TaylorMades and the Callaways. I also tended to hit more of a draw with them than the other two that clearly wanted to fade. I will have to go back and do it again to make sure it wasn't just a fluke, but the Titleists just jumped back into the lead. Now I just need to get back in there in a couple days and hit some along with my own irons to do a true comparison. I forgot how complicated this whole process is.

The 775s have a 52 degree gap wedge. I have this club and like it very much. When I purchased my set, I already had a 7 wood which replaced a 3 iron. I also had previously replaced my 4 iron with a 23 degree hybrid. I ordered my 775 set configured this way: 5 iron through PW and GW. At the same time, I bought a Vokey Spin Mill 56.14 sand wedge in the same shaft as the 775s: the NS Pro. Because I am so pleased with my performance with my 23 degree hybrid, I am considering the replacement of the 5 iron with the hybrid equivalent ( which, for me, would be the Cobra Baffler-- the new version ). Good luck in your quest.

I agree with you, Fusion is the most forgiving irons I've tried so far. I haven't tested X-Tour yet, but I wish to someday when my handicap is low enough. :-P

I've tried forged irons before. Hit balls on the range with it a couple of times then I switched to cast irons. Forged did feel a little bit softer at impact, but as far as performance wise I think they were not much of a difference. Because player's irons are mostly forged and tour staffs are using them, I guess we're inclined to look like them. So, yeah IMO forged is overrated.

Thanks for Fusion's info, by the way. That's what I thought, Fusion is assembled of multi-materials. And yes they're damn expensive, but at least it improved my golf game. Call it an investment? ;-)

I noticed that you're a club fitter/maker. I'd like to know what you thought would be a longer iron; The Mizuno MP 60 W/S300, T/M R7 TP's W/S300 or the new Callaway X-forged W/Project X's.

I'm sure I could figure it out by hitting them, but I'm fortunate enough to have 2 of the 3 sets and I'm trying to hold on to the two that would best suit me. I don't want to have to hit them, so I can use them to trade if need be.

last summer I looked around for a new set of irons after playing some TM LT's for a couple of years. I made the switch to Titleist and I'll never look back, more importantly was the shaft upgrade. I had some Project X's put in there and they are simply amazing, the ball flight definately knocked down a little bit but thats the way I like my flight. Great feel in the 735's... I really enjoy the combo set, it's nice to have that control in my scoring irons and the "forgiveness" in the longer irons.

I am looking at the Mizuno line of irons. Can someone give me the run-down of the Mizuno irons...thanks

Mizuno makes basically two lines of clubs the MX line, cavity back clubs, MX-25 is forged and very popular with Mid handicappers, MX-19 cast, Mx-900 hybrid cavity back set. The MP line is I believe all forged. Several variations, they are known for their cut muscle versions MP-60, MP-67 and I believe MP-32? The 32s are for low handicaps only. If you are an 18 I would start with MX-900 or MX-25. I feel the MX-19 lacks the feel that you are paying extra for in Mizunos. The MX-25s just missed making my bag this year.

I recently switched to the Nike CCI irons from the Callaway X14 Steelheads I've been playing for years. The switch has been very beneficial. The Callaway's large offset has become more and more of a problem for me.

The CCI's have little offset, and feel great.

Don't be mislead by the mislead..... The MP60's and MP32's are for players of all index's. It's a mater of whether or not you're comfortable hitting them and if you intend to grow in your game.

I hit the MP32's when I was an 18 and hit them well. I changed irons on several occassions and I still don't know why. I'm back to the best iron I've ever owned, the MP32's and I'm only a 12-handicapper

So far I've been playing Titleist irons. The 690.CB's feel like butter and look great at address. I greatly benefited from moving to stiff shafts throughout the bag a while back. Beyond that, I use these irons because I like them.

I agree that you must be comfortable with your irons. One of the main problems I had with my Callaways was the offset look at address. When I addressed the ball, it looked like I was going to hook the ball because of the offset, and I ususally did.

Same with me and the Mizuno MX23's. Great clubs, but you get to a certain level, or expectation and they just don't fit anymore.

It's not that I'm that darn good or anything at a 12-handi, it's just I know I won't get better if I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

"This isn't a game of perfection... it's a game of misses and who's misses hurt less"..

I forget who I'm quoting, but it's pretty darn true.

yes katana is synonymous with sword. although the name of the company is katana and their clubs are called swords. same company makes katana samurai swords .

I currently play with 10 yr old Mizuno T-zoid graphite regular, however currently trialling a number of clubs as follows:

Callaway X-20, X-20 Tour & Fusion

TaylorMade r7

I did a 6-iron demo test on all 4 today - the results:

X-20 is a solid club, works pretty well and is reasonably long
X-20 Tour again solid, long, less forgiving (it is a tour club after all)
Fusion was a good, easy to hit club, bit tended to go a bit high for me (lost distance on ocassion)
r7 was the stand out for me. It was very solid, longer than the rest due to the slightly stronger lofts, but held its line well. It seems to me to be between a game-improvement and a tour iron, compared to x-20 & Fusion. This appeals to me, as I do not yet feel ready for a tour iron, yet feel that a game improvement iron won't force to me to work more on my fundamentals (ie. it hides the flaws).

Also, on a value for money basis, there is no contest - r7 wins that race.

Interested to hear any other r7 feedback as up to now I was going to get X-20, but am now swinging into the r7 camp in a big way.

The new Mizuno MP-67's feel like butter to me. You would swear they are cavity backs. The ball flight seems a little higher than my old MP-37's but I'm gonna re-shaft them and see if that helps.

EZ, FYI - the lowest ball flight shaft out there is the TTDG. The only shaft comparable in Rifle is the Project X. Also, the 'flighted series' is designed to increase your ball flight in the more difficult to hit irons...

I did change from TTDG to Project X Flighted's and love them but the ball flight is higher in the 3 and 4 irons.

Currently have the Callaway X-14's but about to get fitted for the Ping I5's and pick them up shortly after.

I must say the X-14's are a great set of irons and have served me well. no real complaints. - just me wanting to update my set.

I5's I found the best for me to hit and I found to be a nice blend between forgiveness and workability. I compared them to clubs such as the cleveland CG2's, CG4 tour's, nike combos, and the X-20's and for me the pings seemed to fit the bill

Just got back into the game after an almost 15 year forced layoff. Decided it was time to retire my 1994 Tiger Shark PRL's and go for a more modern set.

After two solid days under a PCS Class-A fitter's microscope, I emerged with:

6-SW Tom Wishon CFE770 heads on Matrix "Studio 74" shafts and Winn DSI grips.

And a Wishon 321-LI w/ MFS-85 shaft Hybrid, same grip.

I've only had 'em five days now, and they've already made me a better golfer, 3 inches taller and filled in my bald spots. If only I'd met them before my wife....

I had been playing with a cheaper set of Adams Tight Lies Irons I bought 4-5 years ago. This past weekend I ordered the Taylormade R7 TP irons and got custom fit. Demoed nearly every club in the store and the R7s seemed to have the perfect blend of feel and forgiveness. I still shoot in the 80s, so some forgiveness on miss-hits is still appreciated, especially in the longer irons. :-)

I just bought a set of X20s to replace my old '94 Big Berttha irons. I can't believe just how big those old '94s are after comparing them to the X20s. Although I never thought they were huge until then. I have played twice with the X20s and I seem to be hitting them better every shot. I'm also struggling a little with how far I'm hitting each club. But I'm happy with the X20s even if I have the '94s sitting in my office .....just in case.

BTW, should I make it a point to have the loft and lie fitted to me with these new irons? I've never done anything like club fitting before. BTW, I'm a hack that plays in the 90s. Anything I can do to get consistant and lower my scores helps.

Cheers!

I had titleist irons myself (until they were stolen out of my trunk). I have been in school and work the last 2 years so haven't had much time to play. I graduate this semester so I'm currently looking at clubs myself. I have tried the titleist, mizuno, and taylormade.

The r7 tp irons were the most forgiving of all the irons, and they had the most "unique" feel as well. The mp-67's were the least forgiving but i was surprised at how forgiving they actually were for a blade. The titleist 735, 755 and mp-60 all felt about the same as far as forgivness, but i could always tell the mizuno club apart from the titleists. I'm not sure which one felt "best" they all had a slightly different feel, but none of them felt bad to me just different. I do like the mp-67's when you hit it clean. You don't even feel the ball. I was also surprised at how close the 735 and 755 felt when i was testing them. Overall i liked the 735s better though.

Soon as i can find a job I'm going to make a purchase and as it stands right now the r7 tp, mp-60 and 735s are my top choices, but I'm not ruling out the mp67s just yet, they hit too sweet. I'm a little rusty and out of shape now, but when i was playing regularly my handicap was about 10. (never got an official handicap)

Quick questions to the guys with the mizuno clubs with the lofts changed. What are the benefits to doing such a thing? (besides increased/decreased distance of course) Did you buy the clubs already changed or did you have them changed after you bought them and played them? If you bought them changed where does a person test out those changes before you buy?

I would highly reccomend it. The place you bought them from should be able to do it for you. I ordered mine fitted, but I have to due to my height. There generally is no charge for that, but if you already bought them, they may not retrofit them for free. It would not hurt to ask. Incorrect lie can cause you to make poor contact and create ball flight issues that may not be caused by your actual swing. It only takes a few minutes for them to check length and lie. If you are investing a few hundred bucks on a set of irons you should get the most out of them.

I'll echo what he said, I bought mine "off the shelf" without thinking about getting fitted. A couple of days afterwards I saw the "free fitting month" of april and thought "Great...I messed up!".

I scheduled a fitting anyways, and I was really lucky. He said my clubs fit me to a T. He threw several different clubs of different lengths on them with the impact tape on and it really showed how the different in length has a big effect on where you hit the ball. I was hitting it close to the heel of the club just about all of the time and he handed me my club back and it was right in the sweet spot most of the time.

This brings up the chicken and the egg question. If someone has been using standard clubs for years and grooves their swing to those specs, would it hurt them to get clubs that "fit"? My specs have been the same for 10+ years, but I wonder if that is due to the fact that I have been swinging clubs with those specs for so long. If someone is making major swing changes, or new to the game, I would absolutely tell them to get fitted. If they are only playing a few times a month and have been using standard clubs for years, the changes may make them struggle at first. In the long run, I still say get fitted.

I had been playing with Callaway X-14s for the past 5-6 years. Just last month I did the Callaway trade in trade up thing for the new Big Bertha irons. I love the wider sole on them. I feel that I can hit a cleaner shot with them. They gave me $210 for my old irons so I ended up paying just over $400 after taxes for the new ones.

I got a set of Nike Pro Combo Tours about 2 years ago and love them. They feel real solid when hit well (especially the short irons) and I can work the ball with them. The best thing I like about them is if I miss hit it, I get the tactile feedback to let me know, and don't lose a whole lot of distance on the shot.

Have some cheap Tommy Armour "Morph" irons. Picked them up online for about $200 about 1 year ago. Just started playing 3 years ago so not ready to fully dive in and start spending a ton of money.

Pros: long irons are cavity backs, very easy to hit. Shorter irons (8 - SW) are blade configurations, kind of gives you the best of both worlds. Mid irons are cavity backs as well but offer a little lower trajectory. Nice starter clubs for someone like me trying to learn the game and find his swing.

Cons: The offset, I don't need it and don't like it.

I use cleveland ta7's were nice when I bought them BUt I think I should have bought the Tour model instead at the time.

I was looking for a thread on players irons and have noticed that a good one was closed so I guess ill post a question here.

Does anyone who plays cavity backs or used to play cavity backs that switched to forged/blades have the feeling that the ball flies off the face way too hot? Especially for PW-8 iron? To me, a 3/4 shot feels the same on the face as a full shot, but with my GW/SW/LW i notice a difference in the feel, the slower the hit the softer it feels on the face. It feels like a 3/4 shot with my PW just explodes off, and I have a really hard time with distance control with it. My friend has The Nike Forged blades TW model, with 3 added degrees of loft and they every club feels like a SW to me and it doesnt feel like it flies off the face. I also cannot chip for the life of me with my TA7's , the ball comes off way too hot and low, when chipping with my gw/sw/lw and those nike blades though, it makes a nice click and comes off a lot more soft and true, ive wondered if thats a problem with high handicappers not using 9 irons and such around the greens, it simply comes off too low and hot and just sucks. Anyone else notice this with CB irons as opposed to MB/Forged/Blades? Im thinking of getting new irons but $800 is a bit expensive for me since im a college student.

I'm with the Titleist 960CBs now with Rifle 5.5 shafts. I've had the Hogan Apex Edge Pros for 5 years with 6.5 Rifles and went to get fitted and I wasn't swinging hard enough to get the effect out of the 6.5s. If $800 is too expensive then go on ebay and get a good set for a couple hundred. There are so many options that you can figure out what your stats are andthen usually find a set to match.

The wide sole and "game improvement" aspects of the clubs take some getting used to, but I am hitting the ball pretty straight and a little further with these clubs. Overall, I would recommend these clubs for high handicappers seeking forgiveness and distance. I would not recommend to people looking for feel or shot-shaping ability.

The guy i bought my 735's from (he had them for about 2months & needed to upgrade to the 755's so i got his 735's for a bargain price $500 AUD) he gave me a go with the 3 iron and the 6 iron there less forgiving than the 735's but go much better than the 735's on pure shots.

If you are not sure whether you should use blades, you probably aren't ready. Even scratch golfers benefit from the newer designs of the cavity back irons like the 695CB or Mizuno's or Callway XTour's. Unless you are just smoking every iron on the sweet spot, blades don't make much sense. Most newer cavity backs have the thinner top line look that the blades do and forged irons have a ton of feel with the forgiveness that muscle backs don't have.

I have to disagree....

Try a few blade sets out. The technology has come a long way for these also.
Nevermind your handicap. It goes along with ball striking. Some 8 handicappers strike the ball great and have a bad short (scoring) game.
I love the muscle back blades, and the workability is so mush easier then a cavity back. I went back and forth with the Mizuno MP60's for about a month. I hit the Nike forged blades better...(even the mis hits seem better????).
All you can do is hit everything that appeals to you many times.
Not trying to start a war or anything....just try them:-)

TaylorMade Supersteel Burners. Had a used set in 04-05. I loved these irons but they were pretty nicked up so I sold them to buy a new set. Tried some off brand clones that were horrible. Played with Srixon 403Ad's for about 1.5 years. Finally sold the Srixon's and stumbled across Brand New Supersteel's on Ebay (pretty rare considering they were new in 02). I liked the Srixon's, but didn't like the graphite shaft and the Supersteel's are much longer. Easily a full 1-2 clubs longer depending on the shot. They can be had cheap on Ebay if anybody is looking for a quality set of irons in the less than $200 range.

I use Callaway Big Bertha X12 irons with steel shafts. I find them really easy to hit. I would say they are better for higher handicap players, but since my handicap approaches infinity that's good for me.

Cleveland CG2 Forged Irons 3-PW, GW, SW x-stiff steel shaft.

Amazing feel. I hit the 3-iron as high as any irons I've ever hit. 3 iron goes about 220 yards.

Best irons I've ever hit. I was reluctant to go away from the muscle back irons I've favored in the past. With the CG2, I sacrifice very little to any in the touch department, and gain a noticeable amount on the height and carry of my longer irons. My CG2 3-iron has a ball flight that most would expect from a 6 iron.

im really surprised to see mizuno in the lead in this pole. i had no idea they were that popular. i thought calloway or ping would be in the lead by a lot of votes.

on a side note i have cleveland launcher lp irons i got from tgw.com at a heck of a bargain. im getting use to them now after playing about 3 or 4 rounds with them. im liking them more and more every time i play them. my ball striking is improving and i like the flight pattern much better than my old nomad irons. they have a really nice look while im sitting over them and they are very forgiving, my mishits still go a long way though off target. cant beat these for the extremely low price tag.

This poll most likely does not reflect that of the averagfe golfer. Most of the people that come here are more die-hard and are more apt to really search out the one that fits their game. That's not to say that Calloway, Taylor Made or Ping are lesser clubs. It's just that clubs like Mizuno and Titleist have a reputation as players clubs.

I play Ping ISI-K's 4-PW. Removed my 3I and 5W from the bag, got a Callaway 18° hybrid and an extra wedge, 52°.

I know the Pings are old, and there is new technology out there, but irons have not come as long a way as say drivers and balls, or even shoes for that matter, and if you find something that you like, I say stick with it!

Before these I had Tommy Armour 845's (oversized) and they were pretty great too. I've been fortunate in the iron department, not a whole lotta trial and error for me...

what do people recomend for someones first purchase of irons. I hit the range, practice chipping, or play almost every day so far this summer. I guess i'm a beginner who knows a lot about the game. I played a lot as a kid but didnt stick with it. Well now I play and love it. I'm looking for something thats a forgiving club that I can grow into for the next few years as my game evolves. I was thinking g5's or big berthas but what do you guys recomend. I have a set of taylormades right now that were a friends old clubs but I think around christmas time I may buy something.

I purchased Titleist 775 CB's about a month ago. I had the original Nike Slingshots and just never got over the fat sole. The Titleist's aren't as thin as blades but they are thinner than most game improvement iron's. I have hit more shots at the pin and in scoring position with them in one month than I did with the Nike's in 3 years.

I would say that you should either go with the MP-60s, Raptures or 775s

leave the MP-67s and like for when you learn to work the ball... besides, most of your improvement would prolly come with the short game right now

good luck and have fun trying out all the clubs there are to offer

This is my fourth season playing, my first year I played a set of northwestern irons (hand me downs from my Dad) and the next season after a long series of tests and research I bought a set of Cleveland TA2 irons. My instructor felt that they would allow me some workability down the road and he was right, I love being able to play a slight fade/cut shot when needed. I would love to have the CG2's as Spamination mentioned above, those clubs just feel like an even nicer version of what I play with now. I try not to change clubs a lot so it won't be happening this year but the fact you can now get them for under $500cdn is very tempting. My suggestion to all the prospective buyers on here is to try EVERY set of irons at the place where you are buying, don't let brand name decide for you. A friend of mine works at a golf shop and he always says to me that blind brand following often leads to buyers remorse and more purchases down the road.

For the guys with new irons... Absolute first thing to check is the loft and lie of the new sticks.

If you are hitting them many times better than your old ones right out of the gate, then something is different. Usually it can be attributed to wacky lie angles.

Often times when you pick up 5+ yards with new irons, it can just be a loft difference or the clubs may actually be longer.

Always check specs to make sure you are consistent as you tinker and try different things

I played the Mactec M685's for over a year and i like the blade's feel but they weren't for me too much distance loss on slightly off center hits, i recently switched over to the Srixon forged i506 irons and absolutely love them. I hit the ball higher than before which can be a problem in some of our coastal winds but i take that sacrifice for the confidence and feel of the i have with the Srixon's. Cleveland CG4's for about 2 months now and have scored 5 rounds in the 70's with them when previous to having them I scored 5, 70's rounds in an entire year. These clubs have saved me at least 2 to 3 strokes per round and I am quite amazed by them each and every round. I'm getting forgiveness that I have not ever had as well as added distance which is also just fueling more confidence in me.

I had to get a 49 degree gap wedge though to feed the hole that I had between my PW (45 degrees) and 52 degree.

I've posted replys in the 'Blade or Cavity Back' thread stating this. But those posts were early on when I first got these clubs... with a few more rounds under my belt I am a firm believer in game improvement irons (with feel).

Good choices. When I was shopping around and testing clubs, it came down to Mizuno 25's and Callaway X-20's. I didn't try the Titleist since I didn't consider my self good enough to hit a Titleist club. Non the less, I got the Mizuno 25's for the forged feel. I played about three times a year until I decided to try and get better at golf in the Spring/Summer of '06. Currently I hit my 5 iron 175 w/ alot of loft.
Although it is not technically an iron, I have a new Callaway 2x hybrid that replaces my 2 iron because i was so inconsistent/bad at hitting that on the course. I have not yet miss hit with the hybrid while playing a round so I hit it w/ confidence :callaway:

Ping G2 irons, I have the high launch set. Pros for me are the ease of making contact and getting the ball airborne (3 iron is actually my fav), the finish is very durable as well. Cons are the size and shape, and difficulty in moving the ball other than in a straight line.

I am actually in the market to upgrade, admittedly I am a bit intimidated to move up to S59s right now, but the G5s are not that much different to justify the cost of a new set....maybe the S59s one day soon.

I prefer Ping for personal reasons, but I don't think you can go wrong with other brands out there.

I play Ping ISI K irons, and only carry 5-SW, plus Cleveland 60 degree wedge. I play Ping's because that's what I was given (Karsten I) by the generous relative who taught me the game.

I still have the Karsten I set, but retired them and put the ISI irons in play about three years ago.

I am about to start shopping for a new set and don't really like the new Pings. It will be a fun search, and I am considering Callaway, TaylorMade and Mizunos to test and get fitted for by Christmas.

Why venture away from Pings? They're a mid handicappers best friend.

BTW, as my sig shows, I play HiBores. They're awesome. It's like cheatin'.

G Prez: that's a question I am still asking myself. It honestly comes down to not liking the look of the most-likely-suspect Pings (Rapture or G5s) even as I drool a little when I look at the new Ping irons (i10 and g10).

The other part of it is me wanting to try something different as I try to lower my handicap, and the desire to have my first set of brand new, fitted-for-me clubs (had ISI set lie angle adjusted after buying them used from Play It Again.

I currently play 695 MB's but may move to 695 CB's or Srixon 701 Tours this offseason.

You usually get fit for Pings. That's why they have all the different colored dots. The clunkiness is what I find charming in a Ping. If you want to be happy for the rest of your life never make a pretty woman your wife. That kind of thing. They're UGLY because they're GOOD!!!

Taylormade R7 CGB, love the feel, and can really get them in the air when I need to. Use to play R540 XD's and they were a little to light for me. I really like the feel of a bit heavier club.

looking for Titleist DCI 962's if anyone has them

I bought a set of 962's back in 96. They where one of the first sets Titleist brought out before actually having "962" series on the heads. They have to be one of the best CB's titleist ever made.

Now to more important info. My 67's :-D simply amazing. The control, feel and feedback is great for me. I'm a high ball srtiker as is, so the PX's 6.0 setup a great combination down to my MP-R wedges. If you got game, and like the looks of a blade, try these out!

I play the X-18 and enjoy playing them. Not the best club to look at at address but there still my babies.

Will be upgrading to Mizuno MP-60's though, demo'ed them with a stiff shaft. Not only do they look fantastic, also gained 8-10 yards :)

Finally dumped the Acuity irons & picked up a set of Cleveland Launchers with the graphite shafts. These will last me until I hopefully get good enough where I don't need game improvement irons. But until then I am extremely happy.

I got a quick Q (sorry to hijack the thread)...I'm stuck between 3 sets of irons....Cleveland CG4, Adams IDEA A2, or IDEA A2 OS.

I am 22, 5'10" and roughly 185 lbs. I really only starting playing golf this summer and I've been using old clubs, my dad says they are roughly 15-20 years old. I can hit them good (distance), but I do tend to slice. Obviously more practice will help with this. I am wondering what set is the best to go with for my experience.

The IDEA A2 OS have 4 hybrids, which I'm not too sure I need, the A2 seem decent, but are the CG4 not a good choice for my skill level? I am willing to spend up to $400 and all 3 of these irons have good reviews. Just trying to get feedback on anyone with experience.

Thanks

Ping Eye2+.

Excellent feeling clubs that were available very cheap second hand. For an "old" club, they just feel so balanced and are quite forgiving.

The callaway fusions, I love them, Ive had them for about two years and when i hit them good they fly of the face. The only downside to the fusions is that it is very hard to bump and run because of how hot the ball comes off the face of the club

Love my Cobra S9's - easy to hit, forgiving, and get airborne like crazy (sometimes too much in the wind). I'd like to try the Taylor Burners when they come out, though I doubt I'll be switching anytime in the near future.

I have been playing the same irons since 1983. They are the original Tommy Armour 845s Silver Scot. Currently I am only carrying the 3-PW in my bag along with a couple Vokey wedges. However, I still own the 845s 2 iron, Sand Wedge and lob wedge. Recently, I have played two rounds with Callaway X-20 Tour irons and I like them quite a bit. I was fitted for them and will probably buy them as this season is winding down. The pro shop at my brothers club usually gives discounts as the winter approaches in Pittsburgh.

WHATS IN MY BAD:
Nike SasQuatch Sumo2 13* with Aldila vs proto byyou graphite powered by zyvex (65-r)
Dunlop Alta 3 fairway wood
Copperidge 5 fairway wood
Copperidge 21* and 24* Hybrid (Given to me from father-in-laws set but I like them and hit the well)
Nike Ignite 3 Hybrid (part of the set)
Nike Ignite Irons 4 thru PW true temper steel shaft uniflex
Warrior Custom Golf 52* SW, 54* GW and 60* LW
Tour 2005 Putter

I know too many clubs but I am still trying to figure out which clubs to keep and which ones to put in a the trunk of the car. I just got the Nike Ignite Irons so I am trying to figure out what clubs to put away... Probably the 3 wood (I never hit it) and maybe the Copperidge 21* hybrid.
