I hit the Titleist 503.H today. I'm looking to replace my Ping Eye 2 2I with it. Here are my initial thoughts, hitting the 22* model with a S graphite shaft:

It's the same length as my 2I, but looks about a degree more upright. Can't say for sure. It has a lot less offset than the Eye 2, which I like. I've always had to watch out for hooks with the 2I.
The shaft is comfortable, but I may want to try the steel shafted model. Then again, graphite tends to keep my swing speed a little slower (I'm less aggressive with graphite). I don't like that the shaft is green and $40 more expensive (than steel). Perhaps I can get the YS-6 S? [Nope] Steel hits the ball a little lower in this club.
The clubhead is a lot bulkier than I thought. The image on titleist.com (see below) looks like that it almost has a cavity, but instead that black part is a bulge like every other rescue club. Still, the size is something I may have to overcome. I'm not used to having a "blob" on the end of my shaft. [No jokes, please.]
The 22* gets the ball in the air very comfortably, but my 2I probably goes further. The 2I is the same length but 16*. I'm not sure the 19* 503.H will carry as far as my 2I, but everyone says it will. Gonna be tough to tell inside the dome, eh?
I'd rather hit an iron off the fairway, and the club looks kind of "bulbous" and doesn't inspire a whole lot of confidence in me hitting it from the fairway. I tried several swings off the deck and they came off fine, so I'm sure I'd overcome this eventually.
I love the stock Titleist grips. They're corded Golf Prides, I forget which kind (V-55s?). I should get my grips changed out over the winter. They're starting to show a little bit of wear. They're Tour Wraps.
I hit my 2I pretty well. There are some times out of the rough and so on that I could probably use a utility club - it gets hung up pretty easily in less than perfect lies. But if the club doesn't go as far, then forget it. I'm already at my club limit (D, 3W, 2-PW/SW/LW, Putt). I can't add a utility club in there. It'd have to replace a club or stay in the store.
Do people buy headcovers for these things? I feel like I should be.
The poll on titleist.com offers no option for "I'm gonna buy the 503.H." :-)

I hit this in my indoor driving range, so it's tough to tell the distances because the whole range is only 80 yards deep or so.

Perhaps the scenario may in fact be this: keep the 2I, replace my 3I with the 19* 503.H. I dunno, and I won't until I can hit the ball outside sometime (in April or so). Harumph.

Old thread, but I'm thinking of purchasing a used 503.H.

Does the club work for higher handicappers (though mine is lowering)?
How does it play out of the rough?
Will I notice much of a difference between graphite and steel shaft?
Which loft would you recomend to possibly replace my 3 iron?

hey iacas,

i bought this club a month ago. Was thinking of buying the mizuno MP fli-hi, but bought the titleist. I must say i really like this club. it's so much easier to hit this one instead of a iron 2 of my mp 32.

I play the graphite model. The guy in the shop adviced me to take that one. And i got a headcover :)

Guys, it's wise not to revive threads that last saw action in 2004. The situation has changed dramatically.

Look at my signature, for one... :-)

I don't care how much time has elapsed. "I'm not used to having a "blob" on the end of my shaft. [No jokes, please.] " will always be funny.

Is there any way someone could just tell me what loft to get to replace my 3 iron... 19* or 22*?

Hit them and see for yourself. It'll be different for everyone.

It seems that the 22* is the more logical 3 iron replacement....
