Default Sumo^2 Recall!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - March 17th, 2007

To All of you who have purchased the Nike Sumo^2, unfortunatley you will have to send it in and get it replaced.

Apparently some of the drivers were non-conforming to the USGA so Nike pulled it from the market.

I was demoing drivers yesterday and when the pro went to tape up the Nike Sumo^2, he said he can't let me hit it. Then we got into the discussion of why and I found out all of this info.

If you want to get the USGA conforming Sumo^2, bring it into the store you bought it at and you will get a voucher. Hold onto that voucher, and when the replacement Sumo^2 comes in, you can get it at no charge. (There will be a small circle next to the SQ on the driver to identify the conforming Sumo^2.)

If you are wondering,"KJ Choi should have the title he won earlier this year taken back because he won it using the Sumo^2, which is non-conforming" wrong. Nike says that they test all tour players clubs to make sure that they are conforming.

For more info, nikegolf.com.

Feel free to bitch about how much you hate this inconvenience .

I guess the driver was made in China in two seprate plants, one cut the Sumo^2's face at the legal limit and the other cut it 6/1000 of an cm to thin, which translates into an additional 1-2 yards.

This is going to cost Nike approx. 5 million dollars in shipping and packaging all the new drivers.

I have also heard that the Sumo^2 is legal in Europe. I guess the R&A's rules are different than the USGA's rules.

I have no idea what Nike would say about your shaft though.? I would just get the shaft pulled and send in the head, if possible, and just get your new driver you get from nike reshafted with the correct shaft. At the same time, I don't think it is good for shafts to be taken out and re-installed. Who knows, if you pleaded your case correctly, I bet Nike would give you the money to buy a replacement shaft, right now they need all the customer support they can get!

Easiest Driver I Ever Hit. Just need to be ready to take some abuse from friends two fairways over. LOUD is an understatement. 23 of 28 fairways last weekend with 3 less than 5 yards off and one was an intentional to avoid hazards on left.

Nickname comes from my former distance. Its a lot easier hitting Driver 7 iron on a 400 yard hole than Driver 9 wood

Concerned because I have a tournament next week that is governed by USGA rules. From what I can tell its still not on the USGA non-conforming list (new weekly listing comes out tonight at 8PM EDT).

When I busted one about 248 last weekend and started my old Mr. 208 whine one of the young guns got a little upset when he was only 3 yards ahead of me and another young gun said "well I guess you must be Mr 211". He grumbled something about "you need to recalc if you're gonna' keep hitting that tomato can".

Mr208....I mean "Mr.248"....

I've had mine since the first day they came out and love it as well. Amazing how many people "knock" it who have never tried it...ON the course, eh?

I am somewhat in the same boat you are though...our Club Championship Tourney is March 24 & 25. The "recall" doesn't begin until March 26th...and I have been "politely asked" by my club to "refrain" from using my SUMO 2 until I can show that I have a "conforming replacement". I can't blame 'em for asking me not to use it for now...but it DOES make me extremely angry!!!

Hey its NOT on the USGA Non-Conforming Driver List as of today. Its up to them to test it if they think its not in conformance and while they're at it they should check everyone else's bag and grooves while they are at it.

As I understand it its truly just a few clubs that came out that way. I would play it and agree that if it tests out of conformance then you lose your standing.

I hope they have a method to let you keep your driver if it tests OK.

Later

More like Mr. 228-232, but the 208 moniker irks some of the younger guys so I think I'll just keep playing the act out for awhile
