I followed Gustaphson around for a while at Torrey recently and she hits the ball hard, very hard. She cut the corner on a par 4 that you could only consider doing if you have great confidence in your length and accuracy. I don't even t h i n k about doing that on that hole.
I recommend that readers go to a LPGA event sometime, you'll get an education in how some women can play golf. But yes, most men hit the ball somewhat farther than most women do. Partly I think due to the TYPE of muscle (fast-twitch vs red, i.e. mitochondrial content - that type of thing). Women tend to have more endurance per pound of muscle, men more speed of contraction ("explosivity"). Caveat: I'm not a physiologist, and I've never stayed at the Lodge at Torrey Pines .....
