Default Moving to Kentucky....where should I play? - 2 Weeks Ago

Any Kentuckians out there?

I have accepted a promotion with my company and I am moving to your beautiful state and didn't know what to expect as to how this is going to affect my golf. I am moving from the South, so I believe I can say good-bye to year round play, but what about courses?

I am going to be centrally located to both Louisville, Lexington, and might be able to drive to Cinci for a weekend round, but that's going to be rare given the hour and half drive.

So, what courses are must for Louisville? And what about Lexington?

I live in Lexington and there's some great golf here. Here's my list:

Old Silo (Mt. Sterling, KY)
Houston Oaks (Paris, KY)
Kearney Hill (Lexington)
University Club - Wildcat and Big Blue courses (Lexington)
Marriott Griffin Gate (Lexington)
The Bull at Boone's Trace (Lexington)
Gibson Bay (Richmond, KY)
Cherry Blossom (Georgetown, KY).

Those are the best public courses in the Lexington area. All courses that are listed outside of Lexington are accessible within 25 minutes. I'd definitely recommend Old Silo. One of the best courses I've played anywhere.

As for playing all year, you can probably forget about it here unless you don't mind freezing temps? Right now it's upper 50's - low 60's which is still decent golf weather. In another month or so it won't get above 40 and in January and February it likely won't get above 35. No golf for me in those months. ;)

I would definitely check out Man O' War golf too for your practice needs. Voted one of the best driving ranges in America by Golf Digest. Great facility.

Quail Chase in Louisville is a good course. Also, Nevel Meade in Prospect, which is in Oldham county but it's pretty much right outside L-ville.

I live in Louisville.

I agree that Nevel Meade is great. Also:

Heritage Hill
Quail Chase, but only the East course(9)

The parks courses are not very good:
Charlie Vettiner is my favorite
Seneca is OK
Iroquios is OK

Several nice courses in the surrounding counties:
Fuzzy Zoeller's 2 courses are exceptional.
Old Capitol
My Old Ky Home
Maywood
Oldham County CC
Henry County CC
Deer Run
others I am forgetting.

The Casino courses are great, especially Fazio's Belterra.

Many very nice private courses if you know someone:
Valhalla
Persimmon Ridge
Big Spring (hosted the PGA Championship)
Harmony Landing
Hurstbourne CC
Hunting Creek CC
Louisville CC

And I agree with Deron, Lexington is a great golf town. I have played several of those courses.

Old Silo is a must-play. Just let me know when you go there, and I will join you.

Driver: Walter Hagen (Cheapy)
Irons: Powerbilt TPS (Circa 1987)
Wedges: Titlest Vokey
Putter: Bullseye and some Dunlop POS
Ball: Whatever I find (Usually Pinnacles because I shot a 73 with one)
Total Value: Maybe $300, but I still whip all of my friends.
Rounds per year: Maybe 4/year for the last decade. (Break 80 about half the time)

I had always heard so many great things about Persimmon and how it was better than Valhalla and I just didn't care for it. I've played both and Persimmon in my opinion just doesn't compare to Valhalla. Maybe it was just the fact that it was so built up to me that by the time I got to play it I was expecting Augusta? lol. Don't get me wrong though, it was a very nice course, just not what I expected I guess you could say. Didn't feel it was worth $80 either. Maybe that's what left a sour taste in my mouth.

As for Old Silo, I'd be up for playing too if you need someone.

play kenny perry's course

A man comes home from work and is greeted by his wife dressed in a sexy little nightie. "Tie me up," she purrs, "and you can do anything you want." So he ties her up and goes out for a round of golf.

And for weekend or long weekend Stay and Play check out Perry Park Country Club and resort which they've done up real nice (27 holes). Very Clean housing/hotels on grounds, awesome food, nice NEW practice area and good people incharge. Park and don't leave 'til the trip's done. Also BYOB which is a plus and saves on cash.
