Early PGA Predictions -
July 23rd, 2006
I know this is very early, but seeing Tiger and Sergio playing together in the last round of the British Open has me thinking about The PGA at Medinah. Medinah is my first memory of Sergio and how he visibly challenged Tiger in the last round. Who will contend and why?
My Top 4
Tiger because he has won the PGA there before, needs to make sure he keep his tee shots in play, doubt he can play many irons off the tee.
Sergio. Good memories of the venue. Seems to play well on the older more traditional course on tour (Colonial and Westchester).
DiMarco. Had a slow start. Gained confidence this last week. Will want to break out of the runner up status he has had in the majors in past two years.
Phil. Usually never plays will at the British Open. May put the two drivers in the bag.
Dark horse pick
Mike Weir. He was upset with himself with the way he palyed teh last nine holes on Saturday at the British Open. Has something to prove after shooting 80 in the last group on Sunday in 1999.

Medinah was about the only time Sergio was ever "in" a major, and that was seven years ago.
It's early, but I'm picking Tiger again. I'm bound to be wrong 75% of the time, but 25% is the best winnning percentage in golf, bar none.

I imagine Tiger will probably have to use the driver a bit more at Medinah...will be interesting to see if he can contend under these conditions.

For all the talk of Phil's "three of the last nine" and "is Phil a challenger to Tiger" and "is Phil the best golfer in the game?" talk, consider that Tiger has now won three of the last seven majors. Perhaps he'll go four of eight...

I think this is the most unpredictable of the majors. Jim Furyk, Sergio, Stewart Cink, Phil, Tiger all have a good shot. But other than Tiger I would expect the winner might be someone unexpected who gets a hot putter. This often seems the case at the PGA since so late in the season almost every one has their game sorted out.

Adam Scott and Sean O'Hare (sp?) are a couple of young guys that have a lot of game and could contend.

When Tiger is "on", everyone else is playing for second place. A couple of years ago, one of the golf magazines asked about 30 pros what the best single shot was that they saw the previous tour season. The most striking thing about the answers was that Tiger dominated their answers by 3 or 4 to one and not all of them picked the same shot. He just has a way of rising to the occasion whenever it is required.
If I have to pick 4, ok...
Tiger, DiMarco, Adam Scott and Furyk.

Ernie Els might not have finished stronly , but he seems to be playing a lot better than he was a few months back, he has to be a strong contender in the PGA, his short game was sublime at times, if he can get the rest of his game going he should be mixing it up with Tiger, FIGJAM, and Adam Scott ( if he putts better).
1-Tiger
2-Ernie
3-A Scott

I'm going with Tiger, if he keeps his tee shots in play then he will win it.
