Having volunteered there back in 96 and 97 I would say yes. I love the Pebble Beach Pro Am - comedy and all. I look at it the same way I do the FBR and the 16th... if you don't like it - don't come (or watch).
I would like to see more serious tournaments at Pebble Beach more frequently though. It is a great course.

For spectators it's a good time, unless they are golf purists. I don't know how pros can stand trying to play for their bread and butter in that circus. I guess their sponsors demand it because the tournament raises so much money for charities.
I'll bet that's why the celebrity gigs don't happen at the end of the season when guys are fighting to keep their cards or qualify for the next year's Masters, etc.

I thought of posting this same type of thread last night, good topic.
I think there are too many of these type events.
We just suffered throught the Bob Hope and now we have to sit through the Pebble Beach pro am. What I would like to see is them invite all the goof balls to the Hope, Hope was a comedian right, so a fitting tribute to a great man. Just cut the thing down to 4 rounds! Or only have the clowns for the first two rounds.
Then, I would love to see a serious celebrity tournament played during the Pebble Beach Tournament. Only invite serious competitors and play a scratch event for 4 days and see who is really the best. Cut out all the goofing off crap and compete like the pros. Maybe even have a cut and a nice big trophy. I think that would be exciting. How many goofy hats can Bill Murray have? It's the same bs every year. I don't take these tournaments serious when they have the side shows going on. One a year is enough!

They have a serious amateur tournament in Carmel in October called the Stocker Cup where scratch amateurs compete over 4 days, it's a very serious thing, one of the top 35 amateur tournaments in the world. It's held at a private club called The Preserve. I'm not entirely sure if spectators are allowed, there is no mention about this in all the info . . .
The ATT Pro Am used to be the Crosby Clam Bake which was a very intense social event which just happened to have a golf tournament along with it. So the history of this event is such that entertainment is very much part of it and I believe it always will be. N. Cal likes to believe that it is connected to show biz too, and it's not just SoCal that has the celebs.
Doris Day, Merv Griffen, Clint Eastwood are just some of the celebs who live in the area, it is a celeb conscious place as years ago the millionares who built their mansions there would invite hollywood stars up to hunt in the hills, play polo, and golf. This area and Palm Springs were the two major places the stars would gravitate to. That's why there is the Hope and the ATT Pro Am with celebrities, it's always been that way.
I agree that it would be nice to see a serious event at Pebble etc. like the US Open that Tiger won. It's a shame they don't use Cypress Point anymore, used to like to see Jack play the 16th.

I'll just add that having worked that tournament several times I've been witness to mature and thoughtful pros acknowledging the volunteer effort and thanking people with warm hand shakes, or by remembering our names and I've seen the celebrities act like spoiled brats expecting royalty treatment and being rude when they are approached or just not catered to.
Again, it's for charity - so the means justifies the end (I guess).

Oh....Gosh....I forgot about the charity part of it, I was just thinking about the golf action and speaking as a golf purist no doubt.
Okay, we can let them attend the event and watch from the gallery and have a reporter run over to them and ask them how much they donated so everyone will know how generous they are.

To be honest, I don't like how celebrities behave on the course.
I understand they would like to entertain us and the crowd, but sometimes they are not funny at all. Humor is something natural and subtle and most of the times, celebrities "over-act"....
but this is my personal impression, anyone agree with me?
