    driving range issues

Does anyone else have problems on the range that they dont on the course? I am a long ways away from being even an average player but for the most part my shots on the course are decent - its maybe 2 or 3 shots a game that really mess up my score.

But, on the range i am lucky if i hit 35 out of 100 balls right. The range is a bit beat up some days, but i cant imagine that is all of it. On the range i can hit my driver and woods decently but my irons are nothing short of ugly.

That's why I don't hit off mats any longer. Since you don't take a proper divot the feedback is all wrong and you just wind up grooving a different swing. It's not a usefull skill unless you are an instructor.

Try to play has if you were on the course. Do all your routine.
I was doing that, just playing, just to see the ball trajectory. Now I play to a target. My scores have gotten much better since

how long does it take you to hit 100 balls? you may be rushing. If I dont make a concious effort to slow down I will find myself hitting 1 ball, dragging the next over and hitting again, then again.

Make sure you are stepping away from the ball after every swing and so you have to start the entire setup procedure again.

I have to agree. Remember, it can take 3-4 hrs for a single round sometimes.

for 100 ball, i try and take my time lining up my feet and aiming, etc.

    Practice as you play.

    cheers

I don't think thats the case all the time. A freshman who plays for Illinois goes to the range I go to in the off season he hits of mats and he can shoot in the 70's pretty much everytime on nice courses. He always hits off of mats. I think if anything its a bit harder on your body.

But go with works for you. I do agree I'd rather hit off of grass.

    Re: driving range issues

about a year ago, i had a similar problem. It was actually during the spring, when i hadn't golfed for awhile. I went to the range, and i felt my swing was fine, but i would chunk all of my iron shots.

what helped me was: taking my time, and starting with my wedges, and 9 iron, and working my way up to my 5 and 4 irons. I hit about five decent shots with each club, and then work my way up.

my biggest mistake at the range, is going out and trying to kill all of my drives. sometimes, (especially if i am mad at something ) i will go out to the range, and just try to hit every ball as far as i can. That always ends up messing up my swing in the long run; even if i get a few nice crushers.
a bad day on the golf course is always better than a good day at work."

You may be thinking about hitting 100 golfballs not what your there for. practice your shots, swing and setup. get a small bucket of ball instead of a large.
I watched VJ on the range for 2 1/2 hours one day and I bet he didn't hit thirty balls during the whole time I was watching.
