Golfshot is very good, very easy, and doesn't crush your battery.  Recently, it handled 36 holes in one day - with multiple ranges found per hole, and still left me with plenty of battery.  The performance metrics are helpful, and can provide insight into improving your game.  I was about to pull the trigger on a Nikon rangefinder for nearly $300, and I figured the $25 for Golfshot was no worse than the damage a good looking cart girl could create.  I've never sought out...
I was in a very similar position to you just a few years ago.  I actually picked up a new set of Nike Slingshot 4S (4-AW) for about $212 delivered to my front door from Dick's Sporting Goods.  I still see these from time to time, though they are a few years old now (they were already 2 years old when I bought them).  Having a new set gives you the comfort and confidence to get out there while you work to see what other clubs you need to build the set that works for you...
