Looking at the PGA this season, who do you think is (are) the most overrated golfer(s) on tour?

For me I think it is Chris Dimarco. He has 3 wins in 17 years, and challenged in a few majors. Yes he is a competitor, but I don't think his ability and performance match his reputation. Thoughts on this?

Any other names to throw out there?

Davis Love III i love the guy but i havent heard his name in contention in a long long time

"People think the size of the head is most important. Wrong. It's getting a quality shaft. test different shafts to see which goes the straightest. Also, more degrees of loft on the head is better than less. Eleven degrees is about right."

Davis Love III

Unless he gets a miracle, looks like his string of Masters is over. He's all class, but at least he has wins over a long period of time. It's reallly too bad to see him struggling.

I also think "Big Ern" is overrated, as a top tier guy.

Bubba Watson is overrated as a mid tier guy.

tiger woods...that guy is crap. lol jk
1 person who i think is not overrated but rather has under achieved is
aaron baddeley (27 years old). he's got something like 6 total pro wins and the wraps people had on him as a kid(winning aus open at 18 and 19), he has not achieved as much as he probably should have on tour. Steve stricker is another one in terms of tournaments won for his age.

It's hard to call Els overrated. Granted he has not lived up to his own lofty goals, catching Tiger for number one, he did win this year and has won 3 majors. I would be more likekly to put him with DLIII in the past their prime group. Sergio would be tops in my book. Other than being a force in the Ryder Cup, he has not won anything of merit in recent years. Bads is a good call too. I do think he will stay in the World top 20 for a while though. The guy who I keep waiting to break through is Camilo. He is starting to look like he is way more show than go.

Davis Love III i love the guy but i havent heard his name in contention in a long long time

He was injured. http://www.tees2greens.com/blogs/golf_international/archive/2008/02/07/davis-love-iii-excited-to-return-from-injury.aspx Pebble Beach is one of three tournaments Davis Love III has never missed since his rookie season in 1986, and he has rarely been this excited to be back on the Monterey Peninsula. He is staying with Jim Griggs, who lives between the first tee and the driving range, and who has been like a second father to Love. He is playing with Joey Sindelar, as gregarious as they come, competing on the PGA Tour for the last time before turning 50 and the senior tour. The glorious color scheme of turquoise surf, green turf and blue skies remind him why he loves this place so much. And best of all, Love is soaking it all in without a limp. The AT&T; Pebble Beach National Pro-Am will be his first tournament since Love missed the cut at the Deutsche Bank Championship the first week of September. A few weeks later, he was jogging down a slope from the first tee during a casual round when he stepped in a grass-covered hole and shredded ligaments on the outside of his ankle. The doctor who performed the Oct. 2 operation told Love it would be four months before he could play, and probably a month after that before he could go play in a tournament. "Playing a practice round at Pebble was a major accomplishment," Love said Wednesday. "It was probably the most fun practice round I've played in a long, long time, to be back out on tour and playing a PGA Tour golf course. This place has been really good to me, and obviously, it's really good to play at Pebble Beach and in this tournament. "So I'm excited to be here, to say the least." Love followed his therapy plan religiously and played his first 18 holes with his doctor, who was astounded to see Love at full strength a month ahead of schedule. This is one time no one can accuse Love of being an underachiever. He almost entered the FBR Open last week outside Phoenix. He thinks he was strong enough to play the Sony Open last month. But the plan was always Pebble Beach, a place where he could hit the ground running no matter how soggy the ground might be. "The goal was not to just play," Love said. "The goal was to come back ready to play and ready to compete. It's as good as I've ever felt, and this four-month break has been a blessing." Love has no time to waste now. The four-month break, preceded by eight months of lackluster play and nagging back injuries, has caused him to plunge to No. 78 in the world ranking, the lowest he has been in more than two decades. Love likely needs to finish among the top three at Pebble to qualify for the Accenture Match Play Championship, keeping alive his streak of being eligible for every World Golf Championship since the series began in 1999. He has the next two months to either win a tournament or do well enough to get back into the top 50 and qualify for the Masters. Love has played in 70 consecutive majors, the longest streak among active players. Love has not played on a U.S. team since the '05 Presidents Cup, and he doesn't want to miss another. "I haven't played since September, so I've got to play a tournament first and see how it goes," he said. "The best thing to do is what I've done for the last four months -- not try to analyze the number, not try to figure out what it takes to get in which tournament. Just play well each tournament and I'll play where they let me play." Love isn't the only player making a return to the PGA Tour when the AT&T; begins Thursday on three courses. Greg Norman, who turns 53 on Sunday, has not played a regular tour event since the International in 2006. Even at the height of his powers, the Shark stopped coming to the Pebble Beach National Pro-am in 1992. But after a few phone calls, he managed to get a spot for him and his 22-year-old son Gregory, the best father-son outing in golf. "He's the one who asked me if we could get in," Norman said. "I said, 'Gregory, I don't know if I can get in, let alone get both of us in.' All I did was made a couple of phone calls, and fortunately, we're here. So from my perspective, I'm probably going to be more nervous playing with him than he will be playing with me." The defending champion is Phil Mickelson, who tied the 72-hole scoring record of 268 last year with an awesome display of driving. Mickelson is coming off a playoff loss last week in Phoenix to J.B. Holmes, which is a better start than he had last year. A victory would make him the first repeat winner since Mark O'Meara in 1990, and it would be his fourth title at Pebble Beach. Love has won twice, and he tied for fourth a year ago. That turned out to be his best finish of the year, as Love struggled with back injuries and was falling into a rut. That can happen when you've been on tour for 22 years, have accumulated 19 victories and earned over $35 million. In some ways, the ankle injury was a blessing. "It was a good time to have a break," he said. "I could have not stepped in that hole, played five tournaments in the fall and protected my top-50 ranking and just kind of skated through again. This has challenged me to get better, and now I'll have to work my way back up, which is not a bad thing."

Best, Mike Elzey

Phil Mickelson is overrated as a player. Underrated =Colin Montgomerie.

Could you elaborate a little? I can see how Phil might be a little overrated, but I can not understand how Monty is underrated.

well Monty is an underrated player. He has won 8 European tour order of merits and has been been a consistently solid performer for years now- this is backed up with brilliant Ryder Cup performances. I know he hasnt won a major but that does not mean he is not a world class player.

We are now back to the thorny issue of the value of winning a major- what differentiates it from a normal tournament..its still only four rounds but there is more hype surrounding the event..thats all. Look at Todd Hamilton and Ben Crane- they have both won the British Open but i would never regard either as 'world class'..same goes for Rich Beem, and Padraig Harrington.

Phil is overrated because although he has all the Hollywood shots, he does not like the heat of pressure too much i feel.

Ok, I agree with what you are saying about Monty. I just don't think he is underrated because that is what everyone says about Monty. I've really never heard anyone say that he isn't all of those things. I've often heard him described as "the best player not to win a major" - the same thing they said about Phil before he won his first.

Phil has won 33 tournaments, 3 of them majors. He's won the Player's...He's won a Fedex Cup playoff event paired with Tiger... I think he can handle pressure. Granted, he can be streaky. But, I think he could be considered slightly overrated because he gets a lot more attention and press than some other golfers with similar accomplishments.

The only other guys I can think of with similar accomplishments would be Els and Singh. Neither of them is ranked #2 and aren't playing their best. IMHO, Phil gets the most press because he is #2 and a pro golf needs a rivalry. Oh, the golf press also needs a lead story when Tiger doesn't enter. Oh, Phil is (IMHO) a crowd favorite.

Monty has choked in more than one major. He IS a great player, but I don't think he is underrated. He is great in Europe and in the Ryder, but he has underperformed in majors and in the US in general... and I think everyone pretty much acknowledges this.

Phil mickelson he is noat all that good he is so in consisten he will win a tournament one week than miss the cut another

Have you checked on other golfers... most golfers are like that... just look up cuts made v. events played on the PGA site... Phil does pretty darn good in this category. There is only one golfer who does make nearly every cut and his name is Tiger. He is also the only player who doesn't seem to choke, although he occasionally comes up a little short. Just for the record EVENTS V. CUTS for some big names... Adam Scott 90/112 80% Jim Furyk 302/370 82% Vijay Signh 353/390 90% Phil Mickelson 302/370 82% KJ Choi 167/227 73% Stewart Cink 256/319 80% Ernie Els 220/249 88% Retief Goosen 117/148 79% Davis Love III 437/552 79% Tiger 220/234 94% These all look pretty comparable... I guess the coment about Phil missing cuts etc. is kind of BS.

    • However, have you ever considered using small summer houses for such setups? They offer a great solution for creating dedicated practice areas, especially for an affluent audience looking to enhance their outdoor living space.
    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
