Fairway wood or hybrid?

When hybrids have #2, #3, #4, etc, designations, does that denote a 2iron, 3iron, 4iron... ?

That is about as close as anything else these days. For example the loft of a Mizuno MP-67 8i is 40 degrees. The loft of a Callaway Fusion Wide Sole 9i is 41 degrees. Those are basically identical lofts (the same within manufacturing tolerances and long term changes due to play/wear).

Throw in different club lengths (particularly moving between steel and graphite iron shafts) and you realize that the numbers are pretty gross approximations. Within a given model of club they generally have meaning, but across different models/manufacturres, much less so. dave
