So, my wife wants to "try" and play golf...GREAT!
How much do woemn's clubs differ from men's? Shorter, lighter, prettier, etc?
She wants a super cheapo set to see if she likes it, I'd prefer to get her a mid-line decent set. Now thinking I'll just score a set of decent men's irons if they are alright for women?
Any suggestions on which way to go? I sure don't want her to get the total package el cheapos for $199

I bought my wife one of the Adams 'package deals.' Clubs, putter, bag. Think it was closer to $300, though. They'll last her a good long time.

Difference? Grips are thinner, shafts are really whippy (and lighter), heads are lighter, clubs are a bit shorter.

Something I'd recommend is a really large head driver. Probably was the easiest club in the bag for my wife to hit out of the gate. How can you miss with a driver face the size of a cantelope?!!!

The ultimate "old man" setup:

Ping G30 driver
Ping G Fairway woods - 5 and 7 woods
Callaway X-Hot #5 hybrid; Old school secret weapon
Ping G #6-9 irons; W and U wedges
Vokey 54 and 58* Wedges
Odyssey Versa Putter
Golf Balls

Exactly, lighter shorter, prettier. Go with a package. Adams seems like a good deal without going the Walmart route.

Definitely get her some women specific clubs. There's a world of difference between them and a men's standard set.

I built a set of Snake Eyes Viper W's for my wife. She loves them. They look good, are easy to hit, and very woman specific. (15* driver, 20* 5w, 6,7,8,9,PW, SW, putter - I want to add a hybrid for her to make up the difference between the 5w and 6 iron, but right now it's not a priority) I let her choose the golf bag that made her happiest. She settled on a nice Nike bag, it was the most comfy for her to tote.

I also looked at complete sets for her from Adams, Ping, Callaway and Prince. The Vipers were the best deal for us, some assembly required (which I enjoy anyhow)

In my Sasquatch Tour Bag:

Driver - G10 10.5°: UST Pro Vorce V2 Shaft, Regular flex
Hybrid - G10 21° & 24°: TFC 129H, Stiff flex
Irons - S57 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, PW - Nippon 950GH stiff shaftsWedges - Tour 52°, 60° 56°Putter - 34" TracyBall - Treosoft

I just ordered my wife a set of Ladies Wilson Pro Staff Ladies from TGW.com - $299 to upgrade her old Spaldings. The only thing not included is the bag, but I bought her a new bag last year for Christmas.

It was between those and Top Flite XL Ladies set.

After my experience with Wilson brand and a strong response here for the Wilson's, I pulled the trigger yesterday. The Ladies Pro Staff are all graphite shafts.

I agree with you that getting a mid-line set is better than getting the cheapest set you can find.

Best of luck!

Bought my wife a cheap set on ebay ($72 shipped) but I figured if she didnt like it I wouldnt be out a lot of money and I figured it would be harder to sell used left handers if she didnt like it
if she likes it I can slowly upgrade her

When we were shopping for my gf it seemed like everything in stores was walmart crap of 700 bucks for a set of irons. We ended up with a set of nice Cleveland TA-6W irons that were marked down from $500 to $250. Then we got her an Adams A3OS driver, Nickent hybrid and Odyssey white hot putter and Nike stand bag for about another 350 bucks.

    • Taking your dispersion and distance in consideration I analyzed the 4 posible ways to play the hole, or at least the ones that were listed here. I took the brown grass on the left as fescue were you need to punch out sideways to the fairway and rigth of the car path to be fescue too.  Driver "going for the green"  You have to aim more rigth, to the bunker in order to center your shotzone in between the fescue.  Wood of 240 over the bunkers I already like this one more for you. More room to land between the fescue. Balls in the fescue 11% down from 30% with driver. Improve of score from 4.55 to 4.40. 4 iron 210 yards besides the bunkers.    Also a wide area and your shot zone is better than previous ones. This makes almost the fescue dissapear. You really need to hit a bad one (sometimes shit happens). Because of that and only having 120 yards in this is the best choice so far. Down to 4.32 from 4.40. Finally the 6 Iron 180 yards to avoid all trouble.    Wide area an narrow dispersion for almost been in the fairway all the time. Similar than the previous one but 25 yards farther for the hole to avoid been in the bunkers. Average remains the same, 4.33 to 4.32.  Conclusion is easy. Either your 4iron or 6 iron of the tee are equaly good for you. Glad that you made par!
