Hi all. I'm fairly new to golf. It wasn't until the end of this summer that I really decided to try to build a correct golf swing from the ground up. I am pretty confident with my grip. And I feel like I know the correct address posture. My problem is that it fells like I have to bend over quite a bit to get the clubhead down, and I often skull or top the ball when I swing.

I'm 6'4" and my floor-to-wrist is about 38". According to some of the charts I've found online, I should use +1" clubs. Well, I'm thinking to get a set of Maltbys from Golf Galaxy, and I will do a fitting there. The problem is, I don't think I have a repeatable enough swing for the fitting to do much good.

So my main question is, is it worth it to get the +1" new clubs (right now I am using a hand-me-down set of standards) or should I learn to hit my standard ones consistently before considering a fitting?

Also, are Maltby's half-way decent irons or should I look for a used set of name-brand? And if I do, how can I tell if they are longer than standard?

Thanks in advance!

At your height and floor to wrist, you defenitely could use the +1's.

It's better to learn and groove your swing with the clubs that suit you, and club's you plan to play and progress with. Yes, you can learn to be a great player with normal clubs, but if you change down the road to +1's you'll run into problems and have to relearn the swing. I.E. you'll be hitting them fat.

Some simple solutions for using reg clubs are to flex your knee's a bit more (like hitting the ball on a 1-2" downhill lie), or tilt your spine angle, or even moving the ball slightly closer in your stance. Are you pulling your head to watch the ball? Is the ball to far outside your stance? Reason I say these is because one of my bud's is 6' 3/4ish and he uses normal clubs with no problems. I do notice that he grips them at the top instead of down with 1-1/2in of the grip showing. He say's that give's him more leverage to hit the balls further

    • Interesting that Scottie is #10 on the all time money list and he's been on the PGAT for 4 years. Of course, purses are bigger now, but  neat to look at non-the-less.  The list of top 18 money winners in PGA Tour history has plenty of surprises This list is updated through the 2024 RBC Heritage. To add, Scottie won 4.5 million at the Players, Jack played 44 seasons and won a little of 5 million on course.
    • 43 (6 over) Couple bogies, couple Pars, a birdie and no doubles. Not bad for first 9 of the year.
    • Most the stuff I found on Instagram and just copy and mix it up. a few of my favorites: Clean>Squat>Press> March Around the body >catch >Squat> press I also hold a the kettle bell upside down with both hands on the handle. Squat when I stand back up I lift the kettlebell up over and behind my head and hold then repeat
    • Not sure this is the best thread but, if the rain holds off, today is my 1st round of the year.  Getting ready I can not find my Shot Scope.  I guess I put it away too well for the winter and thus that is may "Winter Depression".  I'm sure I put it somewhere that made sense at the time.
