Has anyone in this forum ever tried to coordinate a Sand Trap Open Invitational with interested members? It could be coordinated at either a local or regional level, based on feedback, so that a number of them could be organized. Not trying to either re-create the wheel, or turn it into a science project - just looking to see if this has ever been either accomplished or considered given the forum’s membership size, and perceived level of camaraderie.

I'll help someone set this sort of thing up, but ideally it'd be somewhere "centrally located" and at a time when there's good weather there. North Carolina in about a month, for example.

4 of us met earlier in the summer around Philadelphia. Great time, and it was definitely good to play with like-minded golfers (ie. competitive, rules strictly adhered to, but not too serious).

I'd help set up something local again...

Best part was explaining to my wife that I was going out on "a play date" with 3 strangers I met on the internet... She was skeptical, but glad that none of the others were known axe-murderers.

As I read this, I'm thinking that logicistics on this has got to be tough. If we are going to make it involve the whole board, then we need a bunch of regionals playing similiar courses (rating and slope)...

Actually, I think one big get-together over two days (three rounds over two days) would probably be best: kind of similar to (but a day shorter than) the Newport Cup.

Okay, I admit up front that this comment is a little douche-baggy, but you can't really have an "Open Invitational", can you? It's got to be one or the other, right?

I didn't realize there would be a "semantics" analysis.

You're right, and honestly, I had placed a "/" mark between the two words, but it didn't translate into the final version. My bad... That being said, would you be interested in this concept, or were you more interested in pointing this out?

David Foster Wallace would have been proud of the foregoing exchange.

I think this would be a great deal of fun.

... North Carolina in about a month, for example.

Iacas, as soon as I read this I had to think if I had enough vacation time from work to be able to do this ... and sure enough, even after 3 weeks in Ireland (no golf ... phooey) I could still spend a few days in NC ...

If this actually happened, I would make sure my parents book a cruise with a stop at the location of the tournament, play the tournament, bid farewell, and keep on cruisin.

I'd say a large metro area with cheap flights is better than somewhere centrally located like say, Iowa?

I think the San Francisco Bay Area would be a good place for a number of reasons: -Cheap and plentiful flights with lots of non stop options. Even from the East Coast I've seen sale fares of a shade over $230 return for the next few months. -Plenty of lodging options. -Weather that doesn't venture too far from the extreme, whether it be December or July. So golf less likely to be rained off. -More likely to be a higher proportion of TST members already in the area. -Some interesting golf courses not too far away. Phoenix/Scottsdale might be another good option judging by my above 'criteria'. I've not been to the latter so another to US city to cross off my list if that were to happen!

i LOVE THE BAY AREA FOR GOLF! I know Harding Park is reasonable for prices when they host events.

and...I'd be able to stay for free...so I always love that idea! Carolina's cool. Orlando's too damn hot. Vegas would get us all into trouble with signif others.... San Diego or LA?

    • Hit my tee shot just into the penalty area and barely found it. Swung hard just in case I hit it. It was slightly downhill with a heavy tailwind. I don't actually hit my 9i 170 yards.
    • Right. The difference between being 120 out and 70 out for me (this is the important part) is negligible and not worth putting other risks into play off the tee.   Ok the argument against driver is that my shot cone is comically large. It puts every possible outcome into play. You can't see the green from the tee so there's a good chance I'd have to wait for it to clear which would slow down play. That's the third tee right in the middle of the firing range there. I really don't want to wait just to hit a terrible shot and I especially don't want to injure somebody. Yea I have no problem playing out of the rough short of the bunker if I'm just going to lay up short of the bunker, but I absolutely need to avoid flaring it right into the penalty area if I'm going to be laying up in the first place. As a general strategy I understand where you're coming from. But since we're specifically talking about me (this is a shot I'm going to have to hit on Saturday), I think the cost is fairly marginal. I hit the ball 8' closer on average from 50-100 than I do from 100-150 from the fairway and rough and the green success % difference is 4%. Bunker might as well be a penalty drop. Based on the data,  Here's my SG:A data compared to a 10: I honestly don't know how to use SG for decision making. That's why I was mostly looking at proximity to hole and green success rate for comparison. I mostly use SG as a way to track my progress. All good. Like I said, I appreciate the discussion. It makes me think. If I didn't want to see alternative/opposing viewpoints to my own I just wouldn't post anything. You should post it! In your own swing thread, of course. It's been a fun exercise.
    • Played my first 2024 round at Pierce Lake. Boomed my first drive down #10 fairway, then slowly slipped into mediocrity. 83 (69.6/131). The high point was going 2 of 4 on sand saves. My sand game is pretty marginal but today I must have discovered the secret for a couple hours.
    • day 34. Technique practice. Became too quick and outcome oriented. need to slow down and work on technique again.
    • Day 534, April 18, 2024 Practice before lessons today. Priority piece. No sim this time. 🙂
