Zen golf is a great introduction to Zen philosophy, especially for the golfer.  Good mental game book. Zen Golf and Fearless Golf by Gio Valiente (works with Villegas and others) are a must for serious golfers in my opinion.  Rotella seems like a hack to me.  His books seem amateurish.

My Humble,

Jason

Hello Golfers, I LOVE the Zen series. They focus on the mental part of the game with a very simple way to teach them. He used oriental terms like the gurus from India, I love those metaphorical teachings! A must read! Have an amazing Golf Weekend! Jorge Gomez

The books were a BIG change of pace for me and my game. His teachings are a little repetitive, but it hits home if you actually PRACTICE mindful awareness.

It has helped me calm down during every facet (putting, driving, out of trouble), and it has streamlined my emotions during my day-to-day life.

Just finished reading this book. I really enjoyed the analogy of signing your name, and then tracing it again.

Great read for anybody looking to cut down the mental chatter. Just gave it to a friend of mine to read.

Hey guys, here is a quick shot of awesome-ness.

Dr. Joe Parent is giving his book away in a contest here (kinda cool that he signs it too):

Hope this helps so you don't have to pay for his new book.

Cheers

I listened to this audiobook on my iPhone a while back and I actually like it. Nothing magic right? but he and Rotella are clever and really have a way of exploiting positive mental angles that really help you relax and think.

Parent and Rotella are both adament about this. A big part of their message is either be positive or blank but not, at all costs, negative. It's something we all struggle with even the pros. Visualizing a positive outcome as opposed to "don't hit it over there" is so important.

Exactly. Visualizing is key to confidence and the more confidence you have, the less you think about technical aspects that get in the way on the links.  Like Fred Couples told Rotella at Augusta.. saying he simply tries to visualize the best shot he ever hit with that particular club he has selected and is about to use...

I just started to read Zen Golf this past weekend. I was given the book a few years back by my wife and put it on my desk. Like many things, it disappeared for a long time! I was straightening out my golf club area in the basement to put away the clubs and found Zen Golf and two other "mental side" of golf books in a box. I'm planning on reading them all this winter and pick up the one that appeals to me the most for a re-read in the Spring.

Have not read this book, but have read some others. When I was more into motorcycle riding and maintenance, I read the book : "Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance". It is a story of the author and his son and their ride from Minnesota to Northern California. It is full of anecdotal "Chautauquas" about their journey. Very little about actual maintenance, but mostly about clearing the mind, and metaphysical aspects.

Started reading Zen Golf this week. After finishing Hogan's secret, this book grabbed me. Any book that gives me a few thoughts to clear my head both before a shot or after a missed shot, is a good thought.

Taking a purposeful breath before approaching setup, taking a purposeful breath and then swinging. I can remember that.

Now I have to remember to also aim.

Gave the breathing a shot yesterday. Deep breath as I walked up to the shot. Deep breath before shooting. Tried to make aim at a larger target when putting. Tried to remember to aim every shot, pick a high target. Managed 13 of 18 fairways, 35 putts. Managed a 85 on our par 68. The breath certainly relaxes. Once the shot decision was made, Tried to just think about the breath.

Easier read, than implemented. Really enjoyed the book, easy book to get through. Definitely have to reread some parts to start involving the ideas into my actual game, if that's at all possible.

    • Makes sense.  Like I said, I wouldn't have been upset at their original offer either, and based on the fine print it seems like they've held up their end of the deal.
    • If you've only had to adjust retroactively one time in 8 years and have around 5 people each year without handicaps, that's like 40-50 people total so it sounds like you're doing a pretty good job. I think your questions give enough to go off of. This might be a good way to get new people to actually post a few scores during the 6 weeks leading into the first event. Something like "New members will be eligible for tournament money once they have at least 3 posted rounds in GHIN" or something like that. If they can get 3 rounds in prior to their first event, then they're eligible. If not, they'll soon become eligible after an event or two assuming they play a little bit outside of events.
    • This is a loooooong winded narrative so if you don't like long stories, move on. 😉 Our senior club typically gets about 25 new members each year. We lose about 25 members each year for various reasons (moved to FL/AZ, disabled, dead, too expensive). Of the new members, usually 20 have an active GHIN handicap. About 5 each year do not have a GHIN handicap. When they join our club, we give each member a state association membership that includes GHIN handicapping services. We play a series of handicapped tournaments over the summer. When we sign up a new member who does not have a GHIN handicap, we attempt to give them an estimated index until they have sufficient scores posted to have an actual GHIN index.  Our first event typically is around May 15 so, in theory, a new member has about 6 weeks to post a few scores. Posting season in the Mitten starts April 1. Inevitably, several of the unhandicapped individuals seem  to either not play until the first tournament or can't figure out how to enter scores (hey, they are seniors). That situation then leads to my contacting the new member and asking a series of questions: a. Did you ever have a GHIN handicap? If yes, which State and do you recall what it was? b. Do you have an alternate handicap through a non-GHIN handicap service or a league? c. What do you think your average score was last year (for 9 or 18) d. What was your best score last year? Where did you play and which tee was used? e. What do you consider a very good score for yourself? Based on their responses I attempt to give them an index that makes them competitive in the first couple events BUT does not allow them to win their flight in the first couple events. We don't want the new members to finish last and at the same time, we don't want someone with a "20" playing handicap to win the third flight with a net 57. In the event some new member did shoot a net 57, we also advise everyone that we can and will adjust handicaps retroactively when it is clear to us that a member's handicap does not accurately reflect their potential. We don't like to adjust things retroactively and in the 8 years I have chaired the Handicap Committee, we have only done it once. So here are the questions to the mob: Any ideas how to do this better? Any questions one might ask an unhandicapped individual to better estimate their index/handicap? Would it be reasonable to have a new player play once (or more?) without being eligible to place in the money?
