I saw a list over at Balls, Sticks, & Stuff but I haven't read any of them yet. I don't want to taint my entry.

Top 10 Reasons why I love Golf:
  1. Best way (besides sex) that I've found to exercise. Occasionally better than sex (admit it!).
  2. The persistently unattainable yet momentarily achievable perfect shot.
  3. The window it provides into the soul and character of those that play it.
  4. Watching Tiger Woods as well as reading, talking, or seeing the history of the game.
  5. Nature. Wildlife. Wide open green spaces, trees, and the simply beauty of it all.
  6. Speaking of simple beauty: beer cart girls.
  7. Quality time with friends.
  8. The competition. With yourself, with nature, or with others.
  9. Eating a bunch of chicken wings and having some drinks at the 19th hole.
  10. It's golf! I mean, c'mon, the purest game ever invented. A white ball against a blue sky, folks. A crushed drive. A holed 50-foot putt for birdie. Heck, a holed 50-foot putt for anything. It's golf!
That's off the top of my head. I'm sure other people will give answers I wish I had included!

How would your list look?

300 Yard drives
Solid shots to the green
Rolling in a 30-footer
Up and down out of the bunker.
Breaking my best score record.

It all comes down to one thing to me, being able to picture a shot in my mind and then pull it off on the course. That's what brings me back out time and time again to play these days. Finding the ability in myself to play like I believe I can play.

Lets me spend time with my best friend my wife, even if there are times i'd like to well lets leave that for now. There is nothing in the world like teeing off at 6:00 am in still semi darkness, the sprinklers cliking in the backround and 4 people carring golf bags and discussing the world or anything else that pops into the head. When the sun finnally sticks it head out and all eyes are needed just to follow the ball and a person you just met risks ticks or poison ivy to help you find a ball and you return the favor 2 hole later,Hell who needs the UN let em all play golf!!!!

  • 8 years later...

1.) Hope...hope that the next shot, putt, game will be my best.

2.) The joy of playing a well-played round with a good friend.

3.) The beautiful, peaceful scenery at my course...the birds whistling, the squirrels begging for another morsel of snack, the hundreds of

geese which call our course ponds their home, the deer crossing the fairway at sundown.

4.) The privilege of playing the most honorable competitive game that I'm aware of.

5.) The challenge of trying to play better, play smarter and play...just play this great game!

6.) Having my wife and my buddy's wife walk the course with us and then enjoy a meal together at the club restaurant after the round.

7.) The enjoyment of trying to get good at the short game.

8.) Trying to grow as the game reveals my true character and vocabulary!

9.) The opportunity to introduce a young person to the sport and encourage them as they learn to play golf.

10.) Enjoying watching my favorite pro(s) play and realizing just how good they are week after week.

Though I have a dream job, if I had the skill and backing I would love to have been a pro golfer.

  1. It is a life sport, young and old can play.
  2. You don't have to be 6'5", 270 and run the 40 in 4.7 seconds to be good at it.
  3. Each shot is a new challenge.
  4. The adrenaline rush of a pure hit shot.
  5. Beautiful landscaped courses.
  6. Playing with close friends and my wife.
  7. Meeting new people who love the same game.
  8. The constant challenge of improving your game.
  9. That 45 yard pitch shot that went in even though you couldn't see the hole.  You find out because your friends are hooting!
  10. Watching the ball fly and slowing curve to land exactly where you wanted it.

10. I love to hit things and hit things hard (sounds stupid but it's true). Baseball, softball, boxing and now golf.

9. I love being outdoors and have probably spent much more of my life outdoors than indoors. (I could live in the woods or on the lakes).

8. I love competition. No matter if it's anything from a football game to tiddlywinks to seeing who can throw a rock the farthest I want to win.

7. I like passing my time practicing things most people would consider boring and repetitive. (Used to hit BBs with a broom handle for hours).

6. I like the challenge of meeting a goal I set for myself that nobody else thinks I can achieve.

5. For some strange reason I was good at golf from day one and could beat people that had been playing a long time.

4. I enjoy being around the guys at the course. In general golfers are top notch human beings.

3. My time spent during a round of golf is completely focused on the game and any other problems don't exist for a few hours.

2. I'm getting a little old to play basketball or softball very well and needed something to fill that void.

1. Without question (not even a close race for number one) is spending time with my son doing something we both enjoy.

10. Beautiful refreshment girls

9. Cute Pro shop girls (one is my friend actually and she is a hottie)

8. Meeting interesting people

7. The great outdoors in a controlled environment

6. The challenge to others

5. Mental exercise - A mind is a beautiful thing to waste (National Negro's College Fund motto)

4. My version of viable competition

3. Great exercise - My wife (a PhD in Physiology) says this is the best exercise at my age... Warns you can still get hurt (found that out the hard way)

2. This is a sport that can be shared by anyone of age, race, sex, creed, religon, nationality, handicap.  Hell even Pope Francis and/or Mother Theresa can golf.

1. This is the single sport where you can NEVER EVER be an expert. This game will survive until the end of time itself (if thats possible). No one, and I mean no one, will ever attain the score of 18. Its impossible. So the thrill is keeping working knowing that others in your sport are working hard too. That gives me solace.

Ooops! You're right! I should read the post date before replying.  Thanks for the reminder.  Do I get a little forgiveness for growing up without computers?  Haha! I like your list btw.

Some of the many reasons I love golf: 1: spending time with family. I started this game with my mother, brother, and father. I continue to spend quality time playing with my parents every weekend, it is something special we share together. 2: the feel and sound of a perfect shot. 3: watching the ball fly where you wanted it to. 4: the sound of the ball falling into the cup 5: experiencing the beauty of the courses 6: competition with friends 7: it's a game against yourself 8: beating your lowest score 9: working on something and executing it perfect when it matters

You confront doubt.

You confront nervousness.

You confront decision.

You confront finesse.

You confront power.

You confront anxiety.

You confront confidence.

You confront awareness.

You confront arrogance.

You confront joy.

Most of all you confront your being.

    • You all are right, its not that big of an issue, I'll leave it alone, especially after looking at that picture of Tigers beat up putter. But I also noticed the small circle worn on the sweet-spot where he hits it every time, I definitely don't have one of those. Thanks for the replies
    • Committing to one brand of ball this year - Snell MTB Prime X, the 5 doz. pack. Like how they perform for me. At $18/doz., can live with cover scuffing. Iron regripping with GolfPrice MCC+4 Teams std. in red/navy. May be retiring Odyssey Dual Force after 30 yrs. Seems like I can't get it to the hole anymore. Kind of light and has lots of toe hang. My reg. group's hounding finally wore me down.    From Callaway preowned - trying out the Odyssey Tri-Hot 5K in double wide (less toe hang) and triple wide (face balanced). Both also noticeably heavier...we shall see.
    • WOW, it looks like he has been hitting stones with that putter to put all of those nicks into it.  I can't see how a ball would cause many those dings.
    • I'm fighting a knee as well as a foot so I "Feel your pain".  Luckily for me the PT is helping at this time and I am hoping knee surgery is not imminent.  Best of luck to you.
    • I would guess putting grooves in it might make it non-conforming. I am not sure how stringent the USGA is on restoring golf clubs.
