In the summer here the better quality leather gloves get wasted in the heat. I carry 3 or 4 with me and rotate throughtout a round. The lower quality synthetic gloves tend to resist the heat a bit better so I've been trying those. Best I found was etonic, felt like a leather and lasted like a synthetic. Got 6 on ebay for $6 each, still have one or two left for practising.

For me, the Footjoy Sta-Soft is the best for feel, durability, and fit. I used to use the the 'cheaper' gloves and once I made the switch I could feel the difference. It is like night and day.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

Callaway Warbird. Ridiculously durable.

I second that. Warbird is the only glove I had to change because I lost it (after a long while) and not because it was torn apart (unlike dunlop, srixon and FJ).

I completely agree. There are certainly cheaper gloves out there, but none feel better or fit me better. As far as durability, I usually buy a new glove with every other dozen balls. So I get a good 20 rounds out of each glove before I retire it to practice duty.

Out of curiosity, how long do you usually go before changing gloves?

I think for the most part, you can wear a glove until it's worn out. That usually means until it starts to split, rip, tear or get holes in it. Some of the synthetic gloves start to have the external rubberized coating wear off them before they get holes - that also indicates it's worn out.

As for how long they should last, that depends on a number of factors and can't really be answered. Weather, how you grip club and how firmly you grip club are all major factors as well as the materials in the glove (and the quality of those materials). I know golfers that can wear out a glove in 1-2 rounds in summer because of how they grip and fact their hands sweat a lot. I usually get 10-20 rounds out of a glove depending on weather. If you allow the glove to dry out before throwing it back into the bag it will potentially last longer.

The most important for me is the feel and grip of the glove. The best gloves last shorter than the best, but that's something we have to live with. When a glove is worn enough I use it on the range instead of on the course and get a new one.

Your grip is the largest factor for wear along with how you take care of it. Leaving a cold, wet glove curled up in the bag is a good way to ruin it. I never put the glove in a pocket, always keep it on the outside of the bag, attached with velcro. The bag is stored inside.

The Nomis glove I use is black in the hand, I think this helps to make it last longer. A white glove turning black doesn't give the look I want. On the other side, it doesn't reveal bad grips as well. If you struggle with the grip, using an all white glove might actually work pretty well.

    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
