There's a long, downhill par 3 at my local course that features a green set out on the tip of a cliff. Past the green, there is about 1-2 yards of thick weeds/rough before OB stakes and a severe slope down the cliff. I put my tee shot deep into the rough past the green, just barely in bounds, and was faced with a ridiculous uphill sloping lie. With the ball about 6-8 inches above my back foot, I opened up my stance and took a mighty hack at the ball through the long grass.

The ball popped out of the rough, back up over my head and behind me - OB and down the cliff. Obviously, I didn't want it going down there, but now I know the famous Phil Mickelson flop shot over his head is entirely possible! Plus it was good for a laugh with my buddies.

How is that an eagle? I counted 6 shots.

You're right. I realized that I had made a mistake only after I hit the Submit Reply button and couldn't figure out how to edit my posting. (probably due to my advanced age).

I despirately wanted it to be an eagle but of course it wasn't. The hole-out was for a par - I think. Drive +1, +1 5 iron into the hazard +1 out , +1 for the topped five wood, and +1 5 wood into the cup. I think that is 5 but I may have missed something. I still believe it is the longest hole-out for a par that I have ever heard of.

WITB - about 15lbs. of clubs, a few balls, tees, and a windbreaker

Good friend of mine, big guy, super fast swing, can bomb it, but is erratic. One hole, he takes a massive rip at one, but it's going dead right, low and hard. At about 100 yards, it strikes a huge tree, dead center, and the ball comes straight back at us. I didn't have to dodge, necessarily, (I was on the tee box with him) but it was maybe 15 yards to my right, and seemingly travelling just as fast on the return trip as it was off the club!

Nothing in the swing is done at the expense of balance.

during my recent round, I hit driver a few times right under the ball, sweeping the tee away -- never did that before. Also topped an iron shot and it bounced straight up to me waist high. I caught it barehanded, just like a trick shot, took off my hat, & bowed. Never did that before either.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

1) i was hitting out of a hard packed sand trap a couple weeks ago...

hit the ball off the toe of my 56* with a full.. very hard swing...

ball rockets straight into my buddy's forehead...

i was so shocked that happened that i didnt yell "fore" untill after it hit him...

............

2) yesterday i was playing at a new course in TN... its one of those "shotmakers" golf courses where your driver is obsolete and if you can't "work the ball" you wont survive out there...

anyway.. i had to tee off on a par 5 with a pw to get around the 100 yard 90* dogleg that went straight left over 2 streams of water...

right at the bottom of the hill at exactly 110 yards from the teebox is a white stake in the ground.. its a small piece of pvc pipe with the top end open...

i hit my tee shot and it bounces in the fairway once and lands on top of the pvc pipe and just sits there. i have no idea how that was even possible.

my buddy decided to make me play it as it lies... so i took my 2 iron out and made a baseball-swing at it... lo and behold.. it travels about 150 yards into the first stream. i take my shoes off and roll my pants up and attempt to hit it to the green and i hit it completely fat and it soars sky high and into the second stream 50 yards away...

2nd stream was too deep to hit out of.. so i took a drop. pulled my 60* out and came down on the ball hard...

the ball slams into the green... rolls down slope, and into the hole.

3) theres many more but those are the most recent.

I played golf with my friend and my brother one day at this terrible golf course that has a big pond. Well the pond has ducks and these huge birds that I have no idea what they are called but they always walk around the perimeter of the pond. We're playing the 6th hole with is a long par 4, right next to the pond. My brother and I both get on in two, but my friend is about 20 yards off. Just as my friend takes his third shot, all of the birds (no joke there is probably about 30 of them), run about ten yards in front of him and on to the green. These birds are huge and I wouldn't even be surprised if they couldn't fly. Well anyways, the birds huddle around mine and my brothers' golf balls that are sitting on the green and one of them picks it up and swallows it.

There was a group behinds waiting to hit their approach shots so we all shoo'd the birds of the green. However, my friend still hasn't hit his third shot yet. Well, the birds are off the green and to the side, but one bird is still in his shot path. I said just wait till the bird moves but he was like they're not in my way, I'm hitting it over (cause he also had to carry a sand trap). He takes his back swing and sure enough blades it right into the side of the birds head and it falls over and his ball bounces right back in front of him. The bird fell over then got up and ran over to his friends. It was the funniest thing I have ever seen in my life.

Also, at the same course on the 18th hole they have this huge rock right next to the green. The same friend (on the same day) hit his wedge, bounced off the rock, and landed 20 yards behind him. I have never seen a negative yardage shot in my life, so that was hilarious.

Now it was my turn to hit it on to the green on the same hole. It was raining the day before, and we played in the morning the greens were pretty damp. Well anyways I hit my sand wedge perfect and the ball landed on the green, but we could not see where. So we walked up to the green and it was five inches to the right of the hole, but the green swallowed my golf ball. I could only see the number on the ball.

So I’m sure this has happened before, but here goes.

I’m playing this little par 3 course in Lake Forest CA. The 5th hole is only 65 yrds. At the time my 55* sand wedge was the shortest club I had. Being very new, and not good at half or ¾ swings, I carried way over the green into the creek bed that lines the back left of the green. We knew it was over by a mile as soon as it left my club. Well I caught a lucky bounce from a rock and it flew about 35 feet in the air out of the creek and stopped about a foot from the hole. Tap in for birdie. Well we counted the birdie, I’m not sure if a ball land OB and bounces back in, is it still legal?

What the heck.

Back in high school, I'm playing a 3 wood second to a reachable par five that has a road bordering on the right. As my 3 wood is travelling a little over 200 yards and slicing badly, a friend who had just left the course (and was a really good player, as opposed to myself) and was headed home happened to be driving along the street. His driver's side window is down, the ball enters the car on the fly, hits behind his head on the head rest and ends up in the back on the floor. By the time I got up there we were both laughing, but I was scared to death watching the ball in flight and seeing the car and ball converge.

Most embarrassing, at same course, was low, screaming slice off first tee that literally went between legs of course pro on practice putting green that to this day I would maintain was in a dangerous spot. Strangely, he didn't laugh.

    • I agree with @pganapathy about removing some clubs. I would recommend removing the 2, 3, 4 and 5 irons for now. Play with Driver 3W 5W 3H 5H 6 iron 7 iron 8 iron 9 iron PW ( you don’t have listed) 52 56 Putter Th 60 wedge can be difficult for new players, but you could keep that If your 3H is adjustable, increased the loft to be more like a 4H. Play with these on course and see if you can get a feel of the actual yardages for each club and especially the gaps between them. It may take 10 or more rounds. A par 3 course is helpful for determining the gaps in the irons and some woods too. A device like a Shot Scope H4 can really help give you your actual yardage on course.
