I played insanely great to start todays round(3/3 long fairways with my driver 3/3 greens with my 2nd shot all with wedges) when something crazy happened.... The next hole was a par 3 so I whipped out my 52 degree and took what SEEMED to be my best swing ever. So obviously Im looking skywards after the shot....I see a nice huge big mac divot flying through the air and outta the corner of my eye see my ball 60 yards out maybe 6 feet off the ground slicing hard to the right. And fast. I couldnt believe it...the shot felt so NICE etc....but such a horrible shot.

Anyway, something like the next 7 or 8 shots were like that didnt matter which wedge I used. Whats going on? I really cant figure it out... Im sure this is a common problem.(my first year playing btw)

shanked it?

Im not really familiar with shanking but after looking it up it might be it. Does the ball really have that low of a flight path? It doesnt seem like Im hitting it on the hosel.

I actually thought, because Im really digging down witha steep swing, that the club face twisted/delofted while the ball squished into the ground. Actually the shank thing sounds more reasonable lol

The ball doesn't actually squish into the ground.

Sounds like you cut across and bladed the ball, or hit it very thin.

Im scared to pull out my wedges when Im near the green for this very reason. Its safe to say at least 1/2 the time when Im on the course and I want to lob it a short distance and drop on the green with a wedge, I hit it thin and it rockets past the green.

I guess its about practice, practice, practice.

Take at least 10 practice swings until you get that swing motion that you want. Then line up watch the ball drop down right where you want it to.

Take at least 10 practice

Replace that with: Take as many practice swings as you need to, to be comfortable, and I agree.

A quote from Kris
...is that college bball really isn't "lower tier". The better teams have their rosters filled with guys who could play in the NBA. hell, guys used to come straight from high school to the NBA. I really don't think there's much of a difference skill-wise between the two.

Talking about this dude's shanks ... shankapotamus ... that's too funny (sorry, couldn't resist).

Make sure that during your practice swings and eventual contact swing, you finish with your belt towards the hole and weight on your left foot like a full shot finish. I shank the ball when my brain farts and I lean backwards expecting that high soft lob and all my weight is right and back. A shank doesn't 'go right' it SHOOTS right and then all the laughter starts from my buddies ... I need new friends .........

Replace that with: Practice as much as you need to be comfortable, then go on the course and pull off those kind of shots. Hitting shots you know you can't do is a terrible feeling. That's why practice is so useful, makes it a lot more fun. I've gone from having the fear of duffing every single chip to be disappointed if I'm not close to holing it. It's what you get from practice and confidence.

10 practice swings on the course is excessive. OK if you're alone or with a buddy who isn't bothered, but take the practice off the course.

Well I solved my problem and now Im making the BEST contact I ever had with the ball. Every single one of my wedge shots(full) were great. One the club head came in too steep and got caught in the ground but the shot was still good.

The cure was stand back like a quarter inch more then usual and just take my normal swing TRYING not to think of slicing shanking etc. Just swing.

Thanks for all the replies

Glad you figured it out. Nothing in golf is more frustrating than the "Where the hell did that come from" shot!! And trying to fix what you can't understand. Good luck!

I'm new to the game as well ... I went through a similar funk one day. Several wedges were flying off to the right. Some were hit thin but the majority of the ones that went off to the right were because I didn't stay down on the ball during my swing. I've found that the more lofted clubs are easier to do this if you aren't wary.

I worked it out later that week at the range. Basically, I focused on staying down (head and spine angle), and second, I worked on making sure that the angle of the shaft at address was proper so that my swing plane didn't make the "right flyer" more likely. I played my best round ever the next day ...

One of these will creep up on me with my wedges every once in a while too. It usually happens to me when I am trying to hit at the ball rather they swing through. My hands tense up and I leave the face wide open. It feels solid, but its not.

This happened to me today, and certifiably ruined my round. All my other clubs were normal (not perfect, but 80% of the shots ended up how I wanted them), but my wedges were sh*t. Several times I striped a 3 wood down the pipe, leaving me a pitching or gap wedge into the green. Unfortunately, every time I seemed to hit a ball that went hard right. IDK what the deal is, but it is annoying as all get out.

    • Day 12: Same as last couple days, but focus was on recentering aspect of flow. When I recenter earlier I make decent contact most swings but if I recenter late or not at all it’s a roll of the dice.
    • A couple of things.  Some of the clubs in your bag should be dropped immediately.  A 2-iron for example with what obviously seems to be a lower swing speed or possibly not great swing yet is a definite no-no.  To be hitting that 120-140 yards, which I assume includes run, is a sign that you are not getting the ball airborne at the correct angle to maximise distance.  The reason your 3 and 5 hybrid are going the same distance is that your launch angle is better with the 5.  Loft is your friend. Ideally I would suggest going to a golf or sporting store where you can hit golf balls on a simulator without being disturbed to understand your club carry distances and hopefully swing speed.  With that information we can definitely guide you better.
    • Let us be clear, unless you have proof of cheating, you just sound like a case of sour grapes.  In our club we have a guy who won club titles for many years.  Yes, he was a low single digit handicapper, but there have been quite a few others who played at his level.  Yet his mental strength and experience helped him win in many years when he shouldn't have.  Did he sandbag.  DEFINITELY NOT.  Did he just minimize his mistakes and pull out shots as and when needed.  Definitely.
    • Day 111 - Worked on my grip and higher hands in the backswing. Full swings with the PRGR.
    • First off please forgive me if this is not a proper post or not in the proper location, still learning the ropes around here. Second, it's important that I mention I am very new to the game with only about 10 rounds of golf under my belt, most being 9 holes. Only this year have I started playing 18. That being said, I am hooked, love the game and am very eager to learn and improve. To give you an idea of my skill, the last 2 18 rounds I played were 110 and 105. Not great at all, however I am slowly improving as I learn. Had been having bad slicing issues with the driver and hybrids but after playing some more and hitting the range, I've been able to improve on that quite a bit and have been hitting more straight on average. Irons have always come easier to me as far as hitting straight for some reason. Wedges have needed a lot of improvement, but I practice chipping about 20-30 mins about 3-5 times a week and that's helped a lot. Today I went to the range and started to note down some distance data, mind you I am averaging the distances based off my best guess compared to the distance markers on the range. I do not currently own a range finder or tracker. From reading some similar posts I do understand that filling gaps is ideal, but I am having a some issues figuring out those gaps and understanding which clubs to keep and remove as some gaps are minimal between clubs. Below is an image of the chart I put together showing the clubs and average distances I've been hitting and power applied. For some reason I am hitting my hybrids around the same distances and I am not sure why. Wondering if one of them should be removed. I didn't notice a huge loft difference either. The irons I have are hand me downs from my grandfather and after playing with them a bit, I feel like they're just not giving me what could potentially be there. The feel is a bit hard/harsh and underwhelming if that makes sense and I can't seem to get decent distances from them. Wondering if I should be looking to invest in some more updated irons and if those should be muscle backs or cavity backs? My knowledge here is minimal. I have never played with modern fairway woods, only the classic clubs that are actually wood and much smaller than modern clubs. I recently removed the 4 and 5 woods from my bag as I was never using them and I don't hit them very well or very far. Wondering if I should look into some more modern fairway wood options? I appreciate any feedback or advice anyone is willing to give, please forgive my lack of knowledge. I am eager to learn! Thank you.
