when you say "older" you don't mean like 60s or 70s do you? 'cause if thats the case that just makes it so much funnier.

Dear sir, if your description fits the reality of what happened, and I have no reason to believe otherwise, then you have shown nerves of steel, balls of a raging bull and education and class beyond the royalty.

You, sir, are my new heroe for acting precisely as the golfer we all should be.

I don´t know you, but in the name of golf, I thank you.

... and if for the slightest second you may think I am being sarcastic, I am not.

Please don´t swing while I´m talking !!

wow... thats just... wow...
ive met some real jackasses but if anyone were to threaten me like that someone would be going to jail after the other took a quick trip to the hospital...
if he got in my face like that i woulda reached into my pocket and offered a breath mint... then i would let him have the green and loudly comment on his every shot...
seriously i wouldnt put up with that... its totally uncalled for

Wow that sucks man, you handled yourself well though good to show som class. At my course everyday I grab a large bucket of balls (get free practice balls with membership), so about 80 golf balls and just chip them in, pick them all up and repeat. Never had anyone say anything to me about this either thankfully.

Bummer of a story 0 glad you handled how you did.

At my club they always put out about 100 balls around the chipping green and you are welcome to go at it. Never seems to be an issue.

If you want to to work on Lob shots etc then we have a few chipping green tucked in area's that are about 10 minute walk from the club house where you can have a nice private short game session.

I hate people like that, sure if there was 20 people there & you where hitting other people or using up heaps of the green there would be a reason for confrontation but 4 balls over the limit???
It's like when you are putting to a single hole and doing a drill or something and then some old dude comes over and starts abusing you for hoging the putting green and then he says he wants to putt to that hole when there is 20 other holes. So annoying, just because they are old they feel that they deserve all your respect and if you dont show it they get heaps angry.
I hate it when old people say "when i was a kid" or "if i did that" you just feel like king hitting them and saying this is 2009 & then gutter stomping them till they have no teeth. haha jokes.

That dude probaly has no friends, no wife & just feels that he has to instigate an argument to assert his position, but if you put him in his place he wouldn't harass you any more. You handled it much better than i would have.

My friend and I had a similar situation a couple weeks ago. We were playing on a sat on a busy course and there was another 2some behind us, for the first 9 holes. We were going along pretty good until about hole 7 and werent playing as well, apparently the 2 guys behind us thought we were going too slow. They approached as as we teed off on hole 10 and one said something like " are you going to let us go ahead of you or just hold us up all day" my friend said something like we would have let you go if you had been nicer. He had already teed off on the 10th hole. They just skipped ahead to the next hole as there wasnt anyone ahead of us playing that hole and we never heard from them again that day. A similar situation happened around here recently and 2 older golfers in their 60's actually got into a fight and went to jail. I was just glad they left, golf is hard enough without other people trying to bring you down.

Some people are just impossible to get along with, at least 99% of the people I have ever met playing golf were very friendly and patient its that other fraction of 1% that try to ruin it. This guy probably isnt very well liked off the course either.

...sounds like you were in the wrong here. If you have an open hole in front of you and you are holding up play, you are suppose to let the group behind you play through. They could have asked nicer, but they shouldn't of even needed to ask.

You never really know who it is you're messing with. It could be some ex-green baret who really knows how to fight (dirty), or it could be some douchebag who can't punch as hard as your 80 year old grandma. But let's suppose things are going your way that day and you easily lay the dude out. You win right? Maybe not. Maybe he calls the cops, and when they get there they see he's injured (black eye or some such) and he's got a couple of witnesses who saw you hit him after the two of you exchanged words. Well now you might be going to jail. Probably not for any lenght of time but you still get to be arrested and taken downtown. Now you get to hire a lawyer, make bail, and experience our legal system (probably including the criminal justice system). None of this is earth-shattering, but is this something that is really necessary? What happens though if things aren't going your way that day? What if this dude is a bad ass and he lays you out? What if he's a winp and after you lay him out he goes and gets his gun that he always keeps with him and puts a bullet in you?

The way I see it is that pretty much no matter what happens when you escalate a confrontation to a physical level you lose. If someone attacks you then obviously you have no choice but to defend yourself, and it's easy to imagine scenarios where someone's behavior could justify punching them in the nose (e.g. saying that your mother wears combat boots), but in reality being goaded into a fight is never a good thing. I figured out a long time ago that the people who made a habit of getting into fights were also the people who were missing a lot of teeth. They are the people whom it seems just never seem to get anywhere in life. Their need to fight always ends up sabotaging their efforts of moving up in the world. Those aren't the people you want to be and likewise those aren't the people you need to be associating with in life, and quite frankly some ass on the golf course with a chip on his shoulder fits that bill.

The ultimate point of this post is not to glamorize getting into a fight because someone has offended you or wounded your pride in some unjustifiable fashion. On the net it's easy to talk tough, but in RL fights seldom end well especially the older you get.

^^^Basically what that guy was saying is insult him until he attacks you first. And then lay his ass out.

Y'know - I can never resist reading these types of threads. You clearly have a lot of patience.

If it were me, and the dude really did get up in your face like you described, I'm not sure what I woulda done. Heck - if he were close enough, you coulda called the cops on him for invading your personal space and harassing you. That oughtta shut him up.

    • Hitting some good shots on my golf trip. It's good I can tell when I hit better shots the way I want to swing the ball versus when I use an older swing. Shockingly, the short game has been at worst, not harmful to my game. I am using similar feels to the full swing, in that I try to get my hands down. I've been nipping the ball clean off the turf.
    • I was laid off two months ago. Good severance, a 90 day layoff announcement regulation the company wanted to avoid so technically I'm still on the payroll for a few weeks, and a bunch of banked PTO, so I'm in a great spot and working on a startup idea I've been batting around with my brother for a while. That means I've got time to get to the gym! I'm at like 60-75 minutes 5x a week of strength training, and either a run or a bunch of time playing soccer or tennis with my daughter on the weekends. Stronger than I've been in forever. Up ~5 pounds of (noticeable!) muscle!
    • Do you have examples of exceptional scores versus their established handicap indexes?
    • Day 539, April 23, 2024 Mirror work once again. When I get back to swings, I'll just do it A. LOT.
    • A bit of background. The Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) runs an annual event known as "Team Play." It is a wildly popular match play competition where Men's Clubs across the region put together teams of 20+ golfers together to compete against other clubs in a 16 vs. 16 match. In any given year, approximately 80-100 clubs will participate. Each club is grouped into "pods" of 4, and will play 6 total matches - one home and one away match against the other 3 clubs. The winning club from each pod advances to the Team Play Playoffs - a single elimination format - until a winner is crowned.  Antelope Valley Country Club just advanced to the championship match for the 3rd consecutive year. They won the championship in both 2022 and 2023.  Based on my review of the match history from the past 3 years (linked below), they have won 21 consecutive team matches. Keep in mind, these are handicapped matches, so this is not just a case where a group of sticks bands together to dominate the poor amateurs other SoCal clubs. Even if these guys are grinders who never quit, play their best under pressure and routinely putt the lights out, the law of averages still say that a streak of that nature is mathematically impossible.  Is there any plausible explanation beyond institutionalized sandbagging throughout the club?
