Curious if yall take divots on regular basis or not.
I very rarely take one.
Should I be taking one?

It depends on your swing, if your a picker then you might never take one, unless the lie is really tight, if your a steeper swinger playing on a lot of tight lies you probably should be taking one.

I always take a divot with all clubs up to 3 wood.

i will take divots all the way up to 3 hybrid and 3 wood but only sometimes with these clubs but i think taking a divot is a necessity for good ball striking never seen a good player not take divots with at least 7 iron down

You will hit the ball with more consistent direction and distance if you do the things that you need to do to hit the ground out in front of the ball after you hit the ball. There is nothing magical about the divot. There is something magical about all of the things that are happening in a swing where a divot is going to happen.

Some clubs are also not good for taking divots. Game improvement clubs usually have a wider sole and higher bounce, along with a rounded leading edge. The clubs don't go into the ground very easily.

Personally, I'm a picker but will usually take a divot with the shorter irons and wedges.

Picker here, my divots are usually just the grass blades down to where the dirt just starts.

Same. I usually take a divot 8 iron - W though. Never really anything else though.

But it's not a way I'd suggest playing, I'd suggest taking a divot, or a small one, one every club besides the driver....

Hit a bucket of balls today and it seems I'm taking a small divot after all.
Not those pga pancakes but still "pinching" the ball as I hit it off the ground.
So I guess I'm doin ok.
Most of the fairways I play are fairly firm that will not allow big divots anyway so I guess your course plays more into divot takin than swing sometimes? or combo of both.

As for me, making a huge divots helps me to control ball launch. I believe that with my current swing it helps to increase backspin, that is very usefull when playing on my homecourse, which has very small greens covered with bunkers.

I take divots with my wedges and short irons. Wish I took them more with my mid irons but don't.

The 2 are not equal. All great ball strikers take divots. I believe it is the key to being a quality iron player.

The divot shows that you stiked down on the ball and the lowest point of your swing path is some inches after the ball towards the target. In many tour guys swings' this point is about 4-8 inches away from the ball!

I take the divot as a sign that I've made a good downward strike on the ball. Granted I did hit the ball first of course, no use taking a divot if you hit the ground first and chunk it. I don't really notice when I take a divot or not, but after a round I remember having to find some divots.

    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.
