I've recently been experimenting with hitting bunker shots differently than what's conventional. What I do is:

- use a chip type swing
- ball position is middle to back
- square clubface, slightly open stance
- strong grip
- hit slightly behind ball
- much less swing speed than typical explosion shot, more like chipping effort

The ball comes out a little low without much spin, and then runs more than typical explosion shots, but it seems like I'm more consistent now. It seems to even work in deep bunkers.

Has anyone tried this, and if so, have you found it to be repeatable? Thanks.

That's kind of my approach to long greenside bunker shots or fired egg lie- ball slightly back, square clubface. But I have more control with a higher ball flight and a lot of spin for a normal greenside bunker shot.
