I carry driver, steel-shafted 3 wood, 3-pw irons, 52* gap w, 56* sand w, 60* lob w, and the trusty putter. Used to carry a 5w instead of the lob wedge, but I never have the need for 5w yardage, so I got rid of it.

Newbie here! I have been dreaming of new clubs knowing I dont need them at this point but dreaming none the less! I have looked at different iron hybrid sets and didnt know which would be best and what of my current clubs I would leave in if I got them. I currently have driver 3 and 5 wood 3-9irons pw lw and putter. There is one set that is 3 and 4 hybrid and 5-sw and another is 4 and 5 hybrid with 6-sw. So with a 4 and 5 hybrid would you leave the 3 fw in the bag? What do you carry??? Also are most guys loyal to one brand?? Thanks! !!

A 4 and 5 hybrid, and any number hybrid for that matter, replace that numbered iron. They should hit roughly the same distance. I personally don't use hybrids but I know a lot of people who do and they love them. To answer your question in regards to carrying a 3-wood, that is a must have club in my opinion. If you go with the 4 and 5 hybrid set I'd keep the 5-wood in your bag as well.

As far as staying with the same brand, despite what my signature says, I have no favorite. My Nike irons just ended up being very cheap when I got them and they hit really well when I tested them out. The wedges were a steal and hit just as well as any high end wedge on the market. I'll admit the Driver and 3-wood were added because they were Nike and I wanted to try something different then Callaway. I've found I like these Nike's better then any callaway clubs I've used in the past.

This is not always the case. Most of your free-standing hybrids - the first ones on the scene - fell between FWs and irons in shaft length, and loft. With these, I find that a 3H and a 7W go about the same distance, and a 4H and a 3i go about the same distance.

More recently, you have a class of clubs called iron replacement (IR) hybrids. These are matched to a model of irons, and have roughly the same loft and shaft length as the long numbered iron they replace.

In 2010, Mizuno came up with the MP Fli-Hi iron hybrid. It offered one-to-one replacement for the four different MP iron models that year.

For 2013, Mizuno offered the JPX Fli-Hi irons for use with the JPX iron models. Mizuno also has the MP.H4 irons - Nos. 2 through 7 have IR hybrid heads; 8i and above have player's iron heads.

The last couple of years, most club manufacturers are offering hybrids or hybrid irons as standard clubs or options in many iron models. Or, some "iron" sets such as an Adams Idea Tech V4 version that has all hybrids (4H-9H), except for the wedges.

Read and understand what WUTiger said. Secondly, "do as I say, not as I do" LOL. If you look at my sig, you will see a different practice from the one I will suggest. If I were to go shopping for a set for a golfer with a similar ability to mine, I would want a driver with at least 10* of loft, a couple of fairway woods with around 15-16* and 18-20*, a couple or three stand alone hybrids around 20,23, and 25*, a set of irons about 4-PW starting around 23-24* and ending around 46-48*, a couple or 3 wedges around 50-54-58, and a putter. The 4-PW should be matched from the same brand, and probably the 3 hybrids should match each other, though not necessarily the irons. Yes, that is more than 14 clubs, so you wouldn't always carry them all, but match them to the course you are playing, how you are swinging, and course and weather conditions.

I also have a Tour Edge Trilogy 4w and 7w that I mix in every now and then. Especially in cooler temps and soggy conditions as the Trilogies work better out of the rough than the K15 fairways do. I hit the K15's more consistent though.

I've looked at the hybrid sets, most notably the Adams V3R set but just couldnt get past the bulkyness look of the 7i-PW.

I've also dabbled with using a Ping G10 32* hybrid in place of my 6i but found it to be a little on the erratic side. Great for shots from the FW, rough and bad lies but found I was more consistent on par 3's with the 6i.

I have looked at the v3r and the definitely look interesting. I had just about talked myself into a tight lies set but I dont think the driver would be much of an upgrade imo (my opinion on golf subjects is very near worthless) from my ping rapture and I dont think the putter would be much either. I also wouldnt use the bag so in essence I would be paying for a hybrid/iron set and a couple of fairway woods when I could get what seems to be a better hybrid iron set (possibly the v3r) and a couple of decent fairways for the same price. What do you think?

My current set makeup is in my signature below.  I carry a 4 hybrid most of the time, but switch it back and forth with my 4 iron depending on which I seem to be hitting better at the moment.  I am not really a fan of hybrids because I've not found any yet that really work better for me than irons consistently.  I carry a 7 wood in place of a 3 hybrid/iron and really like that club.  The only other fairway I carry is a 4 wood, which I can hit about as far as a 3 but seem to be able to hit better off the turf.

As a new player, if you already have some clubs, I believe you are much better off spending money on lessons than new clubs.  With lessons your game should improve pretty quickly and your swing will evolve, perhaps quite a lot.  As your swing changes the lie angles you need may well also change and you'll need to have another fitting session and may need to pay to get the clubs adjusted again.  Also, as you get your game together your ideas about what sort of clubs you want may evolve.

That said, I too know the allure of new shiny stuff.  If it won't break the bank, go for it.  But get the lessons too, and for crying out loud don't tell your wife these are the last clubs you'll need for the next five years!
