Just wondering if anyone has played in one of these one man scramble formats that are popping up? Just wondering what type of strategy you started with and what worked, what didn't, etc. Let me know how you made out! Thanks for posting.

Wow, next time I go out to play a round, I'm telling my buddies I'm playing a "one-man scramble." Everybody on my team hits his shot, we (I) pick the best one (of one), and go from there.

Seriously, though, what do you mean? One guy plays a scramble with two different golf balls? Three? Can he be a switch-hitter?

LOL!

I was wondering the same thing. I play a one man scramble every time I golf...... Of course, as one man, I often scramble too damn much. Maybe that's where the term comes from!

I'm not entirely sure of the strategy, but I do ponder it sometimes. This is the format where each person gets two mulligans per hole , right?

a friend of mine plays practice rounds like this
he hits 2 balls
hits two off the T, playing each shot differently, trying to improve his last shot or work on another type of shot (draw, fade, cut etc.)
same thing all the way through to the green

says he has posted like -8 if was to count each "good shot"
i think its a great way to practice, when the course is dead and you are alone

havent tried it, as I am not a member anywhere, but this may come into my praxctice routine for next year

havent heard of an actual tournament format like this though

I think it's called a scratch and scramble. It's kind of interesting and can make for some cool bets. The only one I've seen (or heard of, too) was a 15 handicap playing from the women's tees against the two best players at the club (club champ and the guy he beat) from the "old man's tees". The 15 got to scratch and scramble, too. So, he'd hit 2 drives, pick the best one, hit his second shot twice, pick the best one, hit his third shot twice and so on. Strategy wise, I'd say get your first drive in/near the fairway. That way you can let it rip on the second one. Same kind of thing with approach shots; hit one safe then fire at the pin next. Don't be too aggressive with your first putt, so you'll have an easy tap in. It's an interesting thing to play, but it's not for everyone.

The One Man's I've played in the rule has been if you choose to hit a second (or mulligan) you play the second ball not matter what. My strategy is that I can always do better, so I re-hit mostly approaches and almost every putt. The hard part is to not get over-confident and find yourself trying to better an already usable first shot.

I find it a fun format because I'm not real good at finding 2-3 guys for a team.

There is a nationwide tourney that i saw earlier this year www.onemanscramble.com I did not get a chance to play in it, but my local club is going to do it themselves this weekend. You get 2 "mulligans" per hole but can only use 1 per shot. Par 3 - 2 tee shots and 2 putts for example. I send an update after it's over. Kind of an interesting format...

  • 7 months later...
OK, so after playing in 3 tournaments last year, I am full on ready for Tourney season this year. My aim is to play at least 5 of them.

The first one of the year is this weekend and hopefully the weather cooperates and we can keep the winds under 20mph.

Anyway, the first one is a one man scramble and since I have never watched or participated in a tournament like this, I was wondering if anyone had any tips or general knowledge about this type of tourney.

I'm optimistic in that most of my screw ups are big numbers on holes where I get in really bad positions. I'm hoping with the extra shot that I can avoid those situations altogether. If I could knock the one or two big numbers out of my round each time, it'd probably be 3-4 strokes there easily. Also, my lag putting is terrible which leads to 1-5 three-putts a round these days. I'm thinking that I should at least be able to improve upon that with this format.

Anyone have an idea of a realistic number I should shoot for? I'm sitting at a 10.9 GHIN Index.

I have played in a couple of one man scrambles, basically you get 2 shots off the tee chose the best one, then you get 2 shots from the next lie, and on you go. So you always get 2 shots from each location. One thing that I have done when I have played them in the past is if you hit a good drive, don't bother hitting another. I know it sounds strange, but you can get tired by the end of 18 holes if you are not used to hitting that many shots. Hope that helps and good luck.

RSS has it right.

It's a best ball competition, except you are the only one involved and you get two swings per spot. Tee off twice, take best. Hit irons, take best. Two putts, etc, etc.

RSS, interesting that you say that. I was worried about that myself. Hopefully I can hit a good tee shot and just worry about irons and chipping/putting from there.

Not that I have personal experience with this but another benefit of RSS' philosophy would be that if you hit a shot that is a typical "good" shot for you, but then opt to hit a 2nd which is worse you're walking up to the first ball with negative thoughts. But if you're satisfied that you won't/can't really be any better why not smile and move up.

Do the rules require that you use both shots off the green, I assume not.

Swing - Mulligan - Repeat

I will agree with RSS also. If you hit a good one on your first ball, save yourself from the other, unless you know for certain you should be able to do better. I played in a 4 man last week and we only had 3. I was the best of the 3 so they kept wanting me to hit the exta shot. Towards the end I was hoping to hit a good one on the first shot so I didn't have to swing another time. It can wear you down quick.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

I'm surprised the "rules" (cough, cough) didn't have you rotate the player that played the extra shot. I can see how that would quickly get tiring if you didn't.

Our final Men's League Comp is a One Person Scramble.  Has anyone ever played in one of these?  What was the format?  Looking online, I see at least two possibilities-

1.  If you play a second shot, you MUST use it (variation- you can pick between a first and second putt but not off the green)

2.  Two Mulligans per hole.

Of course, they don't seem to know yet what our format is going to be and said it is possible that we might be able to pick between our best of two on every shot- Being that we are in foursomes, this seems crazy in terms of speed of play.

    • @boogielicious and I are definitely in for the Stay & Play and will need the extra night's stay on Friday. I don't know what the plans are for our group on Friday but even if we don't make it for dinner with the rest of the Friday arrivals, I'll be more than happy to meet up somewhere for a beer or something.
    • Taking your dispersion and distance in consideration I analyzed the 4 posible ways to play the hole, or at least the ones that were listed here. I took the brown grass on the left as fescue were you need to punch out sideways to the fairway and rigth of the car path to be fescue too.  Driver "going for the green"  You have to aim more rigth, to the bunker in order to center your shotzone in between the fescue.  Wood of 240 over the bunkers I already like this one more for you. More room to land between the fescue. Balls in the fescue 11% down from 30% with driver. Improve of score from 4.55 to 4.40. 4 iron 210 yards besides the bunkers.    Also a wide area and your shot zone is better than previous ones. This makes almost the fescue dissapear. You really need to hit a bad one (sometimes shit happens). Because of that and only having 120 yards in this is the best choice so far. Down to 4.32 from 4.40. Finally the 6 Iron 180 yards to avoid all trouble.    Wide area an narrow dispersion for almost been in the fairway all the time. Similar than the previous one but 25 yards farther for the hole to avoid been in the bunkers. Average remains the same, 4.33 to 4.32.  Conclusion is easy. Either your 4iron or 6 iron of the tee are equaly good for you. Glad that you made par!
    • Wish I could have spent 5 minutes in the middle of the morning round to hit some balls at the range. Just did much more of right side through with keeping the shoulders feeling level (not dipping), and I was flushing them. Lol. Maybe too much focus on hands stuff while playing.
    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
    • Very much so. I think the intimidation factor that a lot of people feel playing against someone who's actually very good is significant. I know that Winged Foot pride themselves on the strength of the club. I think they have something like 40-50 players who are plus something. Club championships there are pretty competitive. Can't imagine Oakmont isn't similar. The more I think about this, the more likely it seems that this club is legit. Winning also breeds confidence and I'm sure the other clubs when they play this one are expecting to lose - that can easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
