Buy your self a net! It isn't the range by any means, but it's better than chillin' at home playing video games!

Can't unfortunately. I'm in a shared university house with no garden. I have one for when I go back home in the holidays though

Aw man that sucks. I'm also in college, but luckily I have some room out behind the apartment building.

Occasional shanks (rare but happens) and pushes (enough times in a round which leads to big number holes) are killing my score.   Couple that with my current home course which is built inside vineyards.  All vineyards are considered OB and they run parallel to most holes.  So, a missed push shot = OB = double, triple, or worse.

After you read and try this suggestion, you're going to owe me a 1/2 hour's worth of lessons :-P . I had this EXACT same problem for a month and couldn't figure it out. Simple. You're pushing your hands outside the path of the ball. How to correct it? Put a glove under your forward arm (left if RH, right if LH). You need to keep that tight V as much as you can all the way through the shot. After you put a glove there, put another glove under your other arm (so now you have a glove under both arms) and feel what it's like to use your body to rotate on the ball and not your arms. Keep your arms as tight as you can to your body and maintain that V!!! Hope it helps. Give it a whirl and let me know how it works.

Yeah, I tried that after seeing it on GolfFix some months ago.   If I put a glove under left arm (I am righty), it breaks my swing form rather badly.  I think it's b/c I have shorter arms, and have diminishing flexibility with my hip, waist, shoulder due to past sports injuries.   No problem with putting a glove on my right arm.

BTW, just got a note from my course that they are changing white stakes along vineyards into red ones for pace of play.  Once done, they will ask NCGA to re-rate the course.    Even with the re-rating, I see my handicap going down.

Well I have had that issue before, and it completely fixed it. I just know that keeping that tight V is a component of one's game that MUST be incorporated (or so I was taught). It reinforces proper ball striking and consistency. You mention you have shoulder issues. My dad has had 3 shoulder surgeries and can barely swing a club because of it, but he swings from his hips and rotation on the ball. If you can't do that due to your "diminishing flexibility", I don't know how to help you, sir. Sorry. I gave it a shot.

From a physical stand point, how do you play golf?

Like most of us, time is the biggest problem. Other than that, I need to do a better job taking advantage of my good drives and put the ball on the green from 150 and in more often. My scores are pretty much a function of how many GIR's I hit that day.

Hope I'm replying correctly. I'm new to this forum stuff. Thanks for your suggestion. Unfortunately I hit some beautiful shanks all the while the gloves were nicely kept under my arms. I even wore the "perfect connection" swing trainer that has the C-clamps connected with a bar to keep your arms together. Shank. I'm doing something with my left wrist (I'm left handed) so remarkable that I believe I'm actually delivering the club face almost 90* open. Why do I think this? I've actually done the block/box drill where I place the box just past the ball so that if I push my club head out the toe hits the box telling me I moved outward and the ball caught the hosel ....you know this drill....well I've left the box sitting there....unharmed, unmolested, not the slightest touch .....yet I nailed a full blown shank and I see the glorious mark on the hosel...almost to the backside of the shaft......how's that for crazy? Yep...my shanks are colossal. It's actually the only reason I don't like to play in tournaments or with strangers. The humiliation is unbearable. Day one I shoot 76...beautiful iron play just couldn't putt ....next day the shanks come and I hear "yesterday must've been a fluke...this guy belongs in the "C" flight. It's awful. But I love the game and keep working on it.

Yes I do know the box drill. It's another one I forgot to suggest. The only thing I can think of at this point is your swing plane. You are coming outside inside (I think). Set a tee 6" directly behind your club at address. Bring the club back right over it until it naturally lifts off of the ground. This is the proper way to begin your backswing. I have a friend that takes that sucker right back across his hip. This forces an outside inside swing (I think) and makes him shank A LOT. After you come STRAIGHT back, go STRAIGHT forward the best you can all while keeping that tight V. Please understand, these are things that I have found effective FOR ME. I am not a pro, heck, I haven't even broken 90 yet (although I keep coming extremely close)

I'm sorry I keep saying (I think). I always confuse the outside inside swing pattern with the inside outside swing pattern. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the suggestion anyway.   I think I am keeping the V shape in my swing fairly well.   I just need to practice more.

( My right clavicle was broken in two, the two pieces separated by 1/2 inch.   Instead of screwing them together with pins to join the two pieces, my Dr. recommended to let it heal without surgery.   The "pin" surgery would pose a danger as the bones were too close to a major artery, and the surgery/healing process may lead to arthritis later in life.   Given those reasons, I opted for a non-surgery.   Over time, the two broken bones were healed by calcification (but the two bones healed, still 1/2 inch apart).  The side effect of this is that I lost some vertical movement of my right arm, e.g. I can only serve a tennis ball underhanded, can't throw baseball with full force, etc... In playing golf, the injury prevents me from completing my back swing and I end up compensating with premature move with my hip. This causes my club head to trail and end up pushing.)

Yikes, well, find a way to make the game work for you. Luckily, I'm 22 and the extent of my injuries don't limit my play. I would suggest getting a quality lesson with someone who can work with those limits.

Swing path.

My short game is decent.  I kill myself sometimes and sometimes I help myself out a lot.  My putting is pretty solid.  My irons are pretty accurate.  The biggest thing that kills me is my swing path.  I have been fighting coming over the top forever.  I have two pinched nerves and a partial disk removed in my lower back which starts to effect my game.  When my back starts getting tight the over the top swing comes back and it kills me.  When I am swinging well I can shoot pretty well.  I have a 12.7 handicap right now but am starting to get to the point of pushing over the hump and working that down.  Been there for quite awhile.  So, if I could get my swing path to stay consistent then I feel I could really make a huge improvement.

My sticks:

Ping I15 irons

Ping G5 hybrid

Ping K15 3 wood

Ping G15 driver

Odyssey Whitice Sabertooth putter with extra large Winn grip

Unforced mental errors.  I will start "pushing myself" to make shots and the opposite rears it's ugly head, then I'll look up to admire the shot I was going to hit just in time to see the ball bounce once on the green and roll over the far hill.

I know what I'm doing, just have a hard time convincing myself to keep the head down and relax.
