I'm thinking of doing the same thing for my spring break this year seeing how most of my golf buddies are busy.

I've driven 90 miles to play a golf course solo. I had Thursday/Friday off work and none of my golf buddies could take time off. I had really wanted to play this course for a while and it is situated on one of the best bass fishing lakes in Texas, so I drove out really early and golfed 18 in the morning, and had hired a fishing guide in the afternoon. I enjoyed the trip solo and the following year I repeated the same trip, but with two golfing buddies.

Since my golfing buddies are total flakes when it comes to planning anything I think I will have to do a solo trip if I ever want to get out of town and golf. I tried to set up something last spring and a 3 day trip became a two day, which then became a 1 1/2 day trip, which then became 18 holes at a local course, which then became 9 holes, and then they were 20 minutes late for the tee time. My friends suck.

Several years ago my work schedule broke right and I had a surprise 5 days off straight. I forget how it happened, but it was basically two days notice, so I couldn't find anyone else. Found a hotel in Myrtle running a $59/night special with free hot breakfast since they were renovating or something. Decided I'd be spontaneous. Hopped in the car after my last day of work (my shift ended around 1 a.m.) and was about a 10 hour drive. Once the sun came up, I started calling courses in the northern part of the strand looking to see who had a shower/locker room and had more trouble than I thought. But I think it was Farmstead that told me they've got a shower in their new clubhouse. Was a makeshift apartment or something, but it was like heaven after driving through the night.

Anyway, the trip was fun. As a single I was able to call around and find pretty good last-minute prices. Since I play alone a lot, it was OK for me to get paired up with others. Having only been on one true golf trip with others, I'd say that you lose the cameraderie of the trip, the drinks at night, etc., but from a truly golf perspective, it's not bad at all.

To me, the bummer, besides the lack of camaraderie, is the cost. Paying for everything yourself really drives the total upwards - not sharing board, car and golf deals might cost extra for a single.

On the other hand, if all you want to do is play golf, it's perfect.

does this count... I had to go back to Toledo right before the semester started to take a class that lasted one week and met every night from 6-10 pm. Naturally I took my golf clubs, and everyday I played 18 first thing in the morning, then went back to the hotel and prepared for class for 5 hrs, then went to class, went out with friends after class, and repeat the next day. I think I played all 5 days and only twice did I play with friends from the area who were still there. So it wasn't a golf vacation per se, but I sure did get a lot of rounds in.

If I were you... I would do it... no sense staying home and being bored for a week. Hell, if it's the end of Febuary I will join you... I have a week off after the 24th.

Last year my brother and his family went to Florida for a week's vacation and invited me to come along. I brought my sticks, of course. Those people, when on vacation, don't get up until 2pm usually, and then just hang out at the hotel pool. This to me equals GET UP EARLY AND GOLF! I did that every day, some days getting in 36 holes.

Another time my golf buddy invited me to go with him to Palm Springs, where his ex-wife and kids would be vacationing. OK, so I booked in...and then, at the LAST minute, my buddy pulls out! Uh oh. I call my sister and ask if she'd like to come down with her kids and she says yes (those two ladies get along well, as do their kids). I brought down my clubs and played 36 every day, just joining them for dinner.

Each time I either went out solo or got paired up with some folks - no problem either way. Getting on most places as a single is easy.

I guess that I do it all the time over the winter. I spend a few months with the family all over central and south central Florida while laid off over the winter, and I fish and golf alot while there. I play around Okeechobee and St. Cloud / Kissimee by myself and was only put with another single player once and it was funny because he lived 1 hour north of where I do in Ft Wayne In. I play the speed of the course or crowd, if it's not busy I go at normal speed, if it's busy I'll play 2 balls, 1 vs 2 or brand against brand or so on. I enjoy playing alone because my regular partners whine about every shot they make to the point I've thrown a huggies at them. It's all in fun , but sometimes the quiet is nice also.

Wasn't a specific "golf" trip but I went to Monterey several years ago with an old girlfriend... She didn't play golf so she went shopping and I went as a single to San Juan Oaks in Hollister and got paired with a twosome and another single, had a great time... Next day went to Poppy Hills as a single first thing in the morning and got paired with one of the assistants... Fun round, having an assistant pro give local course advice was great... I say go and have a good time

I take my clubs wheneever I travel on business and often extend the trip for a day or two and play 36 a day. I also sometimes take golf trips by myself when my wife can't get off from work and my golf buddies aren't available. I probably play 25 rounds a year out of town as a single. It's much easier to get tee times at the last minute as a single than as a group and you have flexibility to play wherever you want. Sometimes you get out by yourself and other times get paired up. Both options are okay with me. Golfers are almost always friendly on the course even if they're jerks in other parts of their lives. I like to be the first one out in the morning and play fast. I then usually find another place to play an afternoon round or get a discounted replay rate at the same course. Last month in Orlando I played 54 a day. Hard to do that with a group. I usually do one or two group trips a year as well.

I play most of the time by myself, was actually thinking of going somewhere to play while i was off for the holidays but just havent done it, I think a really long car trip alone(10-12 hours or more) would be just too boring. Was thinking of going down to orlando or alabama but decided not to, i would have to go at least that far to get warm enough weather to want to play. I had watched the big break disney and thought it might be neat to go play there. Maybe some other time, but when weather gets warm enough, id rather just play around here, there are still a few nice courses in my area that I havent played yet, even within an hour drive or so. Its nice to play someplace you're familiar with but the occasional new place is nice too.

I take my clubs to one of the places I go to in Mexico, and play against one of the caddies while hiring another guy. They are both my buddies so we have a great time! Neither speaks English, other than some golf phrases so they can get by caddying.

Like others have mentioned, my golfing buddies here in Canada are flakes and could never get organized to go on a golf trip, they can barely get their shoes on the right feet! Flakes, indeed!

  • 3 weeks later...
I haven't for a while; but when I travel for work it usually involves my being somewhere for at least a couple of weeks. If the weather there is favorable for golf I bring the clubs with me. Of course this usually means I go out as a single or if I'm lucky I can play with a co-worker who lives or was sent there too.

That being said; I have had the opportunity to play in Toronto, Vancouver BC, Warsaw, Poland and Scotland. I've met and played with many great people along the way and it's partially financed by my company. My GF had a meeting to attend in Paris last April and fortunately the weather was in the low 70's and I managed to get in a couple of rounds there. Last week I had to attend a funeral for a relative in Honolulu and I got in 3 rounds there.

I decided if I waited for others to do things with, I could be waiting a looooonnnggg time. So I just get out there and do it myself. As I've said; I met a lot of great people and have had wonderful experiences.

So I say; just do it.

    • Eh. He broke ONE of Tiger's records. Youngest to be ranked #1 in AJGA. It didn't help that Tiger's birthday is in late December, or that Tiger didn't play many AJGA events before he was 15. Did he do any of these things? TIGER WOODS' AMATEUR VICTORIES YEAR WIN(S) 1984 10-and- under Junior World Golf Championships Boys    1985 10-and- under Junior World Golf Championships Boys    1988 Boy's 11-12 Junior World Golf Championships   1989 Boy's 13-14 Junior World Golf Championships   1990 Boy's 13-14 Junior World Golf Championships, Insurance Youth Golf Classic   1991 U.S. Junior Amateur, Boys 15–17 Junior World Golf Championships, Orange Bowl International Junior Look at some other AJGA Players of the Year. How many of these names do you recognize? A few, for sure. I assure y'all, I'm not trying to pee in your Cheerios. I just don't get what the point is. Okay. I get that, then. Thanks.
    • Day 56: 4/19/2024 Okay, even though I'll be teeing it up in a tournament in less than a week. I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
    • Just stumbled onto the article.  Totally random and thought it might be interested to hear other thoughts. maybe I am tired of all the LIV crap and  this just caught my attention.
    • Day 1: Spent some time hitting some balls. Working on my hips and a “soft” and straight trail arm.
    • Slight digression on the way to my point. Back in the day there were a lot of people who said that Tiger won because of “the Tiger effect” where people pushed too hard and made mistakes trying to catch him and fell by the wayside. I thought that was BS. It was just that he was that much better than them. I don’t think anything has changed my mind on that.    The hype about Miles Russell is very limited. I’ve seen nothing about him outside of some fairly hardcore golf websites. But I think that the reason those people are talking about him is because he is very good. Same as Tiger. And like I said he just broke one of Tiger’s records. That gets hardcore golf fans to pay attention.
