So I was contemplating getting new Vokeys this year, but decided to put it off and get them refinished/regrooved in black oxide. Here is what the finished product is going to look like - sick. I don't have the spin milled, but the paint scheme is going to be identical.

Keeping the Scratch wedge. It was $45 per wedge (get rid of dings, re-groove, refinish, and paintfill). I also called to have them stamp my initials - I didn't get a quote on that, probably like $5 a wedge.

Cleveland does some of their wedges in this finish. If you don't wipe your clubs down, it will rust and the finish will wear down a little over time in the areas that make the most contact. The best thing to do is to throw one of those silicon rags that are used to wipe down shotgun barrels in your bag and wipe them down after each round. That puts a thin layer of oils on the club and protects it.

That is pretty sweet. Does Titleist offer customization and re-finishing for their wedges, similar to the scotties, or is this a separate company that does it?

This is done by a local guy in Michigan - his company is called Chop Shop Golf.

What is the process for doing that? Is it a paint or powdercoat? If so I'd be leary about it chipping or flaking off.

Looks great!

I love the look they got. Regrooving is also great. You got the wedge in like new condition for 60% less than the cost of a new wedge.

It's neither. It's basically a black oxidizing that penetrates the metal like 5 millionths of an inch. It's the same thing Nike uses on these wedges below, so it won't chip or flake (since it's just the metal) but eventually it will wear down in a couple years at the spots you most make contact (i.e. sole and point of impact on the face). The key is to just make sure you wipe it off with one of those silicone rags after play - takes a couple seconds.

Does silicone rags make a difference to normal cotton towels?

The silicone rag is impregnated with silicone, which you apply after you dry off the club - it puts a very thin layer of silicone on the club, which protects it from rusting and moisture between rounds (basically an additional protection on top of just keeping it dry). Scotty Cameron has started to sell the rags for a ridiculous price, but you can find them online for really cheap - they are mostly used to keep gun barrels clean in storage.

Is there anything else you can use to care for those finishes on wedges? I bought some new Nike SV Tour wedges this winter at a great price, and haven't used them yet. But i've heard they can rust and what not, so is there anything that I can use to clean them that i can find just around the house? Thanks.

You can use a little baby oil on a dry cloth, but really the silicone cloth is the way to go. They are only a few bucks. You can get them online or if you have a gun store near you they should have them.

  • 2 weeks later...
They are too nice to hit.

I purchased two of them on Ebay, used them once and the finish came completely off the bottom, Cleaned the club once and it rusted as I was cleaning it.

Back to the satin finish for me.

I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
