HI,

I just bought a new 3 wood but have trouble hitting it. I either top it or hit one of those nasty 150 yard worm-burners. I have always been better at hitting a 3 or 4 iron than a wood. What is the proper setup? Do I set up with the ball off my left foot and hands almost even with the clubhead like a driver, or do I line up like a 3 iron with the ball a little past the center and hands ahead of the clubhead at address. Thanks.

Line it up like a long iron, not as far forward as the driver. You want to hit the ball on a slightly descending plane. Ball position is a personal thing, but usually a ball or two inside the left heel is good.

Put the ball where you would for a 3 iron, swing at it like you would for a 3 iron. Club hits the ball, then the ground, you may want to take a little shallow divot. You are probably topping it because the bottom of the swing is behind the ball. Don't hit it like a driver, hit down on the ball.
