when i was a kid(started playing at 13), i didn't keep score. i probably started keeping score about 3 years in when i was playing solid, controlled shots. keeping score if you have yet to know what you're actually doing is the fastest way to quitting the sport, imho.

Worst front 9 when I began in 2007 was 67 on my third trip out; best hole was a 5, worst was a 10.

I played a 9-hole par 3 when I was first beginning, I think I had a 51 on my second time out.

If I recall correctly, the first time I ever kept score for nine holes was something like two or three weeks after I had started playing. It was a private course that in total was around 6350 yards from the tees I played (dumb). I shot over 80 and I actually counted every stroke because I wanted to see what my very first 9 hole score would be. Needless to say, my buddy was trying to help me as best he could and God bless him for trying. The course was empty so I wasn't holding anyone up.

This game is brutal for all levels of players, but I'm glad I'm not in that beginning stage anymore.

I've had plenty of rounds in the 50s, even on executive courses. I remember being excited the first time I broke 100 for 18 holes... at a par-3 course. With no water or sand. When I was 23.

Wow, you just gave me so much hope. I'm averaging about a 70 on my 18 hole par 3 course. It makes me feel better to know I'm pretty well on track for a two lesson, three month golfer. I'd lose another ten strokes if I could hit four and five foot putts....

I don't know my worst, but I've recorded a 120 for 18 holes. I've probably not shot much worse than that, but I'm not certain. A friend of mine apparently shot a 165 for 18 his first time out.

I'm just starting and shot +41 on the front nine.

It was few months after that before I wrote down my scores again - every round was a practice round. By the end of the season, I was doing much better.

wow... i dunno who you guys are playing with... but when im with someone new to the game... around double par is when its time to start picking up the ball and dropping it closer to the green... so whatever double par comes to on that particular course... +36 would be the max id write down if we were even keeping a score

Double par would be 144, so that's not much different from the numbers we're talking about here. But if you're not holding people up, why not just go ahead and hole out? Usually the problem is lots of shots that don't go anywhere, so it doesn't take a lot longer to shoot 150 than it does to shoot 100---you just walk 10 feet forward with the same club and swing again. I wouldn't go out a crowded time, but you've got to practice swinging on the course some time.

double par thru 9 on a par 36 is 72... if you are shooting 144 thru 9... you need to pick up... if nobody is around and you arent holding anyone up... hit it as many times as you want as long as the marshalls dont say anything to you

I played my first nine holes this past Thursday. It wasn't pretty but I only lost 4 balls and had fun so it was all good. We played the back nine, which is more difficult than the front, and I believe it to be 37 par for the back. I didn't keep score but it was probably double par plus a few shots when all was said and done.

First time keeping score... I think I shot a 66 at 9-years-old. Luckily those scores didn't last very long and I was double-bogey golf by the time the season ended... Thank GOD those days are long behind me and I can only look forward. Interesting thread, Mr. Fisherman.

      I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

      Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
