Looking into apps for the iphone atm as a GPS is a bit pricey for me right now. Can anyone recommend a good app for the iphone. I just want distances, not too fussed about visual maps or scoring ability. Living in Australia will make it a challenge to add my courses however.

golfshot is the best for iphone. i LOVE it. have to check on australian courses tho

I am using/love golf shot. I like the putting stats on golflogix more though. Both have good features that the other doesn't have, but both work really well. I have to email golfshot though and have them fix my course lol. They have hole screwed up everywhere :P I think they based the yardages on the

old setup from like 10 years ago :P

I use golfshot to keep my scores, GIR, driving accuracy, putts, and more. I love it. (I use the free one so no GPS)

One thing to consider is battery life. One of my golf mags did a recent report on gps aps for the smart phones and they reported that none of them lasted a complete 18 hole round. they really recommended getting a stand alone gps unit

I'm sure I'm just an outlier, but I've never had mine die once yet this year (granted I've only played 1 18 hole round). I use my phone all day and then go out and play 9 after work or whatever else I was doing. Usually I make sure its near fully charged before I go, and although it's a little less accurate, I put it to sleep during shots rather than keep the GPS tracking on the entire time. I'm still on the fence though, I want to get some kind of standalone unit, but I can't decide on a GPS or a range finder. If I went GPS I'd be looking at skycaddy or uPro, and if I went rangefinder i'd be going Leupold GX-1 for the price :P Either way though, these programs are a great alternative for someone who only has $30 to blow and not feel guilty since it requires no subscription fee.

Do they have a website, id love to read about all the aps. Have had mixed reviews in Australia. Tried a free one out today and uploaded via google maps to my course. As im not metropolitan they dont zoom in enough on the course which means i could be 10m out on some holes. Found out the hard way that 10m is too much.

Id love to buy the GPS unit but for $300 there go some of my club upgrades.

Also an app that lets me set points while im actually out on the course would be brilliant, then i wouldnt have to map the thing on google so inaccurately

That's silly. I used FreeCaddie on my Touch Diamond and now use GolfCard on my Hero. Never left a course with a dead battery, and I use the GPS on every single shot. My buddy does the same on his iPhone.

Plus, spare batteries are cheap, as are portable USB chargers. That golf mag gets a bunch of advertising money from GPS manufacturers, not app developers.

Although this doesn't help the iPhone users, BlackBerry users may like BBGPSgolf, which is completely free. I use it and the distances are almost always the same a sprinklerheads at the courses I play. You can also add/edit courses (using Google maps). It does drain the battery a fair bit, although not nearly completely. BBGPSgolf lets you set how often it recalculates one's position, and by changing it from 1 sec to 2 seconds my battery life is much better.

One downside--other players sometimes think you're breaching etiquette and always checking email while playing! (better to tell them up front you're using GPS)

sorry to drum up a repeated topic, but i really want an iphone app that lets me map the course while im on course as google maps is hopeless for my location. it doesnt zoom in far enough for accurate measuring. not sure if one exists. might just get the bushnell neo for 100 bucks.

Hello.

I have often perused this forum for information but never decided to register until now so I could respond on this topic. I suggest people looking for a GPS/Smartphone App look up GolfCard as one poster here has mentioned. I tried out 2 different free ones and GolfCard (24 hour refund policy on Android) before sticking with the latter.

1) It will NOT drain your battery in one full round unless you stay in the GPS rangefinder screen for the entire round (which you shouldn't be, because otherwise you won't be able to enter your scores).

2) It does allow people to map courses through PC software (I've done it for private, unmarked clubs and it works fine). I know you can map courses while walking them also, but I don't know if that updates the oobgolf database where the courses are stored or not.

3) As one poster already mentioned, it is a good idea to let some of the more serious golfers you end up playing with that you are using a golf app on your phone. I overheard one guy complaining about me to his playing partner before I addressed it.

4) It does cost money ($8 I believe), but IMO it's well worth it. I've used it for well over 50 rounds already this year.

5) I know for a fact it's available on the iPhone, because when I was checking out the website they touted it as one of the top iPhone apps as rated by People Magazine (or some other mainstream mag).

+1 on Golfshot....I love the app. I have never had it die on 18 holes and I walk most of the time. Golf card would be a close second mainly because it is really inexpensive. good luck

+1 on Freecaddie, I use it on a Nokia N85, free and gives front/middle/back green distance which is enough for me

2 weeks ago I downloaed GPSGOLFSHOT to my Verizon phone. I had my doubts about it accuracy, but I have found it to be very accurate and user friendly. It cost like $3 per month, and does not use your phone minutes.

  • 3 years later...

Hey guys, I hope everyone is having a great week so far. The weekend is almost here and for half the country great weather for a round or two.

I am hoping I can get some input from you guys.  Since a lot of folks, and I think I can safely say this, a huge majority of golfers have a smart phone.  So the question is, do any of you use any golf apps to help you with your game?  If you do, which app do you like and why? Is it free or pay?

I have a couple that I think might be good, but before I mention mine I want to here from you.  I think this is a great topic and hope I get a lot of support from everyone.

I use Golfshot GPS for yardage, to keep score, and to track my stats (have also tried Swing-by-Swing and GolfLogix but just prefer the Golfshot interface). You may want to try a forum search on the topic as I'm fairly certain there are some prior threads on this as well.

    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
    • I agree with @klineka & @DaveP043 above.  When a new member first joins the club they cold be told that they are not eligible for tournaments until they have an established HCP.  As you said, it only takes a few rounds.  If they do not to post HCP that was their choice and choices have consequences.  If playing in the tournament is important to them then they should step up and establish an HCP.  Maybe they miss the 1st tournament, is that a real big deal?  And if it is a "Big Deal" to them then they had the opportunity to establish the HCP. As for not knowing how to report for HCP I assume your club has a pro and they should be able to assist in getting the scores reported and I suspect out of state courses may also have staff that can assist if asked.
