I hope this wasn't over slow play .

Any horror stories out there similar to this one? I have a slightly humerous/slightly violent story.

I was on a small 9 hole course in a small Iowa town when I was fresh to the game of golf. It's where one goes to be as bad as they want to be, because, well, everyone else is just as bad anyway. Anyway, my golfing partner (who was also bad and new to the game) dropped me off near number 9's green where I went to hit my short approach shot.

Apparently, my partner then got a little too close to the green w/ the cart and the owner of the course came strolling over, huffing and puffing.

Before I knew what was really happening, I look over and the owner is literally chest bumping my partner. I was so stunned to be seeing this that I just kind of froze. I didn't know whether to laugh or get angry.

But, knowing my golfing partner doesn't have the best "people skills" (and apparently, the owner wasn't any better), I quickly run over there to break it up. I tell my partner to go park the cart in the cart shed while I stayed and smoothed things over w/ the owner the best I could.

My partner, after the shock of what happened wore off a little on him, wanted to go press assault charges on the owner. He was steamed. Well, I had to talk him out of that. What good comes out of it anyway?

The whole thing was just kind of surreal. Needless to say, we never went been back.

I've never seen any violence on the course, but I don't live in Springfield, MA. They have a very real violence problem there.

And really, who head butts people? Not a left hook or something, but a head butt? In what way does that get a point across? And it puts your head in a vulnerable position!

Back in my senior year, someone headbutted another guy in the hallaway of the school. It knocked out the one dude while the guy that did the butting cracked his head open with blood dripping down. Was pretty funny.

Never seen any violence besides a huge hawk attacking some small animal.

A head butt? Springfield, MA is soft.
I think it was at Mystery Valley Golf Club in Lithonia, (near Atlanta) GA a few years ago where it went way beyond "physical", and guns were pulled out of bags.

Some how no one here has mentioned how this all happened with a 13 year old kid in tow. I know he's no baby but who the hell gets in a fight over golf of all things with their kid or little brother with them???

I'm curious what course in Iowa... I live in central Iowa and do not want to give my bussiness to anyone who would treat a guest, and that's what golfers are on a course, so poorly.

Thanks

it doesnt really surpise me that much of fighting on the course since people get so frustrated golfing. The reason why there arent more fights is because they arent really competing against each other physically, like basketball. You know there are tons of fights on the basketball courts and the obvious hockey

...Another member of the foursome then allegedly threw a golf ball...

"Ouch! That really hurt! Who throws a golf ball? Honestly...? You fight like a woman..."

Seriously though... not cool.

Doesn't surprise me that it would happen out here...

# of reasons why I avoid the Springfield courses, as well as Chicopee... including slow play, degenerate people and lack of any kind of respect/etiquette on a golf course.

I have never personally witnessed any violence on the course, but a few years ago an elderly man was beaten to death on a city course by young gang members who robbed him. They beat him to death with his own golf clubs. The fellows were caught and were prosecuted. Since that time the legislature has passed a concealed weapon carry law that permits citizens to carry a weapon concealed, so maybe it won't happen again.

I can't belive it does not happen more. Mix men, booze, 5 hours in the sun, competition, strangers, frustration and maybe a deadly object flying towards you every so often, then toss in some a-hole who is not a "golfer" and I can see where you would get some conflict.

Of course this has never happened to me, or even come close.

Besides the violence i commit against inanimate objects, ive never seen it on a golf course. Seeing two golfers come to fisticuffs would be quite amusing, actually. lol.

Don't underestimate head butts they are vicious... But yeah I don't get angry enough at golf to physically harm someone.

My gf hit a duck once after her shot bounced off a light post. Does that count?

Haven't experienced any violence on the course (yet), but I can see how it could happen with so much frustration and some pretty pig-headed people playing the game thinking they are much better than they are and acting like they own the place. I'd say the thing keeping all the violence at bay is the pure distance between groups. Who knows, maybe I'll see my first golf brawl sometime soon

I've seen quite a few fights back when I was still playing competitive soccer though (and quite a few headbutts leading to concussions on both ends!)...

Cheers,

Where in the world is Zinedine Zidane??

Being a Ma$$Hole myself, when you get a group of 8-10 under 30's out there playing nine drinking during the dusk special. Not a single round goes by without a random act of violence or out burst of wrestling.

    • It seems like too much work for me. I'm actually surprised at myself for spending as much time on this as I already have. Shot Scope tells me my shots to finish with a 7i is 0.1 better than with my 50 or 55 so I'm just going to go with it. Actually, I tend to be the complete opposite. I've never faced a shot I'm convinced I can't hit. It leads to great heroics and complete flops. Conservative for me might just be someone else's normal.
    • Tell me you've not seen Bill play without telling me you've not seen Bill play? 😄 Just teasing @billchao. 😄
    • And like Matt said, and I have hinted at… it's ONE ROUND. Because you have to get hot. Better players than him failed to get through. And… Peaked too soon, perhaps. He could also get injured, get surpassed, lose interest or lose his game… Again, if I trusted y'all to uphold the bet, and if the bet wasn't basically a 15-year proposition… I'd bet y'all. The odds are against him, and heavily so. So… he didn't qualify, and he's playing on a sponsor's exemption. Jordan Spieth was 16 years old when he tied for 16th in a PGA Tour event… and I realize that mentioning Jordan Spieth (who has obviously had a lot of success) seems to argue against my point, but Spieth is the exception and he did better at only a year older than this fella. The odds are strongly against him.
    • He shot -5 with a bogey on the last hole. Those Monday Q events are seriously tough to get through. Lots of very very good players play in those, including normally a fair few tour players who've lost their cards, including past winners. It is a small sample size, but he also just broke one of Tiger's records (youngest ever to be ranked one in AJGA if memory serves). He's the best 15 year old in the world at the moment. He's also pretty small and skinny - if he grows and fills out a bit and gets stronger, he could be a serious force to be reckoned with. He may of course also go off the boil and struggle or his swing may not last his growth or something, so it's not like he's odds on to make it or anything like that. I think it will be interesting to see how he progresses and if (big if granted) he progresses well, then he will be quite the prospect.
    • At a basic level, you can take those strokes gained numbers and if you know what the baseline strokes to hole out is from each distance, you can figure out how many strokes on average you will take to hole out from any given spot on the golf course. Then you can take that shot zone thing from shotscope and put it down there and see what the average is for each club and each target you choose. That's not exactly trivial to do though even with a computer, so the strategy guides (like LSW) use rules of thumb to make those decisions easier for you to make on the fly. Most of the time you'll come up with the optimal strategy and on the odd occasion when you don't, the strategy you come up with will be pretty darn close to optimal. If you're anything like me, then you'll probably wind up being a little too conservative with both club choice and target. Fear of penalty strokes can make you play suboptimally. Basically it's a bad idea to base your strategy on a shot that might pop up less than 1 in 20 times. If you happen to hit that shot, then today just isn't your day, but the 19 times you don't, you'll be in that much better of a spot.
