So.....

My friends and I went to play St Mellion, in the Uk.

Its easily the hardest course I have ever played. (designed by big Jack himself)

Virtually every fairway has a river running down the right side, with o.b to the left.
No run offs and no bail outs.

The 10th, 11th and 12th are like Amen Corner and just as beautiful. 200yd elevated tees, shots through a canopy to a fairway 100 yds below....

Amazing greens (think 5ft of spin with an Ad333)

Two club pro's teed off prior to us and the best they could muster was a 78.

One tee shot is a 200 yard carry over a lake to a fairway about the size of my driveway at home.

Apparently the English Open is there next year. Its apparently only second to Carnoustie for diificulty.

I am going back at the next opportunity!

Are you a member of one of the Crown courses??
St Mellion is definately one of the courses I need to play, quite a few from my club have gone and said how hard they find it.... they are a bit wild off the tee though haha

Yes I am a member of South Winchester. Probably the hardest course in my area, and I still found St Mellion very, very hard.

PLaying it free was a major bonus though, even afer I had settled our £256 drinks tab!

We're planning a golf trip to Scotland/England in 2013, I'll have to add this course to the list of potentials. Sounds fun. I don't mind hard courses when on golf trips, I damn near expect them.

The course really looks great - but you better had paid a greenfee instead of the bar tab, or were this all ladies you run up during your round and had to settle?

Nope it was all drinks. Beer mainly - sat outside watching people play the 18th

The best i could muster was 104. Which included one birdie (on a par four) and god knows how many doubles. Every hole invites the risk, and then punishes the sh1t out of you when you make a mistake If you are down in that area, try "The Rolls Of Monmouth", its formerly owned by the Rolls-Royce family and its quite brilliant. I have played with buddies and had the whole course to myself! Also its very close to Celtic Manor but I did prefer The Rolls. I am planning a trip to Ireland next year (my wife is Irish), I plan to try Portmarnock, Doonbeg and Lahinch. I have walked all three but have never had the privelege (or the cash) to play them. I am a lover of links golf in its purest form.

20 balls in 2 rounds? Ouch! Great course; one of my favourites and should be more frequently used as a Tour venue.......but then the pros don't like to be made to look foolish. Please play Portmarnoch and Lahinch; simply wonderful experience.

    • However, have you ever considered using small summer houses for such setups? They offer a great solution for creating dedicated practice areas, especially for an affluent audience looking to enhance their outdoor living space.
    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.
