Ever been complimented on something golf-related? I.e swing, putting, etc.

If so, on what?

I get complimented by players in my club all the time, but that's mostly because I've got a somewhat decent looking swing compared to most of them, and my handicap is one of the five lowest. None of them know of course what my swing really looks like. One guy keeps saying "Great shot" right after my swing, before anyone has seen where the ball is going.

I get them from time to time. The bad putters love my stroke, a little longer than most, but smooth and in control the whole time. Short hitters love my driver, and even better players like the low trajectory and lots of roll I get. I play an 8 degree driver which helps, and play it left to right exclusively. A controlled cut that slides 10 yards left to right and rolls out there deep.

But the most fun part of my game is the sand wedge. As a kid I used to hit real balls in my backyard with it, and experimented with the face wide open, flop shots, simple chips, open stances, various ball positions, etc. Even before Phil made it "en vogue" I leaned how to turn the blade wide open, take almost a full swing and hit shots that go 20 yards, but also go 20 yards UP. I would stand as close to a large tree or tall pine as I could, then hit flop shots OVER it. Once I did it, I move a foot closer, then closer and closer etc.

My nickname among a few guys I play with/used to work with due to my flop shots is "The Righty Lefty.". I'm a righty of course. I have to say, even though I'm NOT a Phil fan at all, I like the name.

I have used a 56 degree sand wedge only for more than 20 years and just open the blade various degrees. No need for a 60 degree here....

Folks compliment me on my Driver swing all the time, I guess because mine are straight and consistent distance wise while they spray all over the range.

Then they ask me why I hit my eight iron for two shots after every swing of the Driver. I tell them "so I can hit my Driver straight and not spray it all over the range"

I had a professional football player once complement me for an entire round at a par 3 on how smooth and athletic my swing was. Granted, it was at a nice local par 3 course, so he didn't see my "smooth" swing produce a 220 yard drive :)

I find golf compliments incredibly hard to receive. Especially since there is a good chance that I will hit a poor shot in the next few holes.

iv had two that really mad me feel good. once i played as a single and shot 65 with 3 birdies and an eagle on the front for a 31 and 3 birdies and 2 bogies on the back for a 34 (-6) and at the end of the round the people i was playing with said i was the best golfer that they had ever seen and that i would certainly get a scholarship somewhere for it and another was from a random guy who saw me shoot a 35 (-1) with a bogie on 9 and he said "you just never miss do you" when we got done with the round and were shaking hands

I just recently got back into golf after about a 12 year break. I stopped playing right before I went into High School. I went to golfsmith earlier in the summer to buy a new set of clubs and went onto the hitting machine thing they have there. I told the guy that its been about 12 years since ive even swung a club so he asked to see me hit a few balls. He said I havnt lost a step at all in my swing. All my balls were well hit and straight down the pipe. It was a pretty good feeling because I wasnt sure how I was going to do. Now of course when im playing on the course all my balls doing go straight, but thats just how things work. You can hit them fine while testing, but once you get on the actual course you start hitting bad.

I have been complimented a few times but one really sticks out for me.

I blocked my second shot on a par 5 right into a sand trap about 100 yards from the green and took my 53* and caught the ball cleanly out and made it spin stopped about 4 ft from the hole. I was pretty happy as I made my birdie but I was alone and didn't think anyone would have seen it. All of a sudden some lady who I didn't know came down from the restaurant overlooking the 18th just to tell me how impressed she was with my sand shot. She told me it looked just like it does on tv. It made me feel really good that some stranger would walk all the way down just to compliment me.

I think my favorite compliment to date was during the awards ceremony at a recent best ball tourney. I won closest to the pin on a 150 yard uphill par 3. It's nice to receive compliments from a whole room full of "golfers". It wasn't until after that I found out I was the only one to hit that green during any of the last umpteen tournaments. Still, it made me feel pretty good.

I also receive compliments on my swing. Doesn't make much sense to me as I still spray the ball all over the place occasionally. I guess it looks good to some, or they just like lying! LOL

I tend to get complimented by playing partners on the amount of back spin I put onto my wedge shots. What I don't think they always realise is that the spin is really a problem for me and makes anything but short wedge shots hard work because it tends to result in the ball spinning off of the green or worse still out of the air well short of the green if I'm not careful with the swing which is a bit too often for my taste...I'm looking forward to the release of the conforming Mizuno MP T-11 wedges which should help me out a bit I hope.

    • Yea Club Rat said it. I really enjoyed the Senator and the Judge, then over to Grand National where there a couple good courses plus a fun par 3. The one I do play whenever I visit there is Ross Bridge; something about this course that is just good fun. I hope to play more of the courses in the future, but tomorrow is promised to no one, so hope is the key word. Have Fun, iSank

    • Day 56: 4/19/2024 Okay, even though I'll be teeing it up in a tournament in less than a week. I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
