Had a tee-time this afternoon at one of the better courses in my area but my normal playing partners all had too much other stuff going on to join me so I ended up canceling. Too bad to ... had a coupon for a great price for 18 +carts.
Oh well ... i went to my home course and played 18 instead ... but was really looking forward to playing somewhere new and with friends. Problem is if it's not my brother-in-laws or my son-in-law, I don't know any other players well enough to just call and invite. Next year I plan to join a league in hopes of meeting other players.
I don't mind playing alone most of the time, but to hit a nice course for a full afternoon of golf is just always better to share with friends I think ....

Any of you guys have the same problem? Any of you here in the Appleton/Fox Valley area of Wisconsin?

Joining a league is the way to go. Make sure they put together the foursomes each week so you golf with different people. Our league puts together foursomes of A, B, C, and D each week. Rarely golf with the same guys.

A league is a good way to meet people in your area who are interstedin golf. It's also been a great way for me to improve my game, playing competetively every week and getting to see a bunch of other golfers play theri games. Some you might not want to emulate, but there's always something to learn.

Also my advice would be to find one friend who is as rabid as you are with a similar schedule who you can usually count on to play. I have one friend in particular who I have played probably 70% of my casual rounds with.

I hope to be be moving to the Charlotte NC area in the near future and I'll have to basically start over, new courses, new friends etc. I'm kind of looking forward to it!
I plan to join a league, and eventually get a membership somewhere. Hopefully, with the potential increase in income, I can afford them quickly.

I run into the same problem all the time, except in my case it's not that I don't have the golfing buddies, but they just don't have the money that I do, so they are limited. Not to mention almost all my friends are in college and/or working, it's hard to find a suitable time in my 60 hour weeks.

Why not try asking the pro shop to pair you with a 2 or 3 some? Easy way to meet people, and a good chance to see everyone's game and compare and play with them.

I have none as well... Too bad I'm not up in the NE to join you. I'm definitely not to the point where I want to join a league, both for cost and for my lack of skill.

I'm a loner as well. I didn't grow up in the area, so have very few friends here in SE Indiana. I got a membership this year, but the league times conflict with my schedule. I play 99% as a single. The rare times I get paired with strangers is usually a pleasant experience. I also play with my 12 yo son when he isn't playing with his friends.

I'd like to get a few more but I have one friend I play with regularly, then I have a couple of old friends I play with as well. I just this year started played with a couple of really good players and I'd like to keep that going. When people are playing well, it rubs off on you (or at least me). I've added on as a single alot and it is ok, but not the same. I like to joke around a bit on the course and when I play as a single, I keep to myself.

I have one that I play with between weekly and bi-weekly due to his lacking resources. Otherwise I go out to a local 18 hole without calling and essentially tell them that I want to go out. They don't allow singles if it's busy, so they'll stick you with some random people; and I've yet to have near as bad an experience with randoms than with friends (cause they don't have to watch themselves as much so they let themselves go).

It's alright and allows you to be free. With a group of people that like to golf "oh, you went golfing? You should've called me up!" then you feel kinda guilty...

Boyder, I feel for you. When I moved to Florida 20 years ago I left all my golfing friends in Chicago. I had no idea that it is so hard to find a reliable group of friendly guys in a new place that love playing as much as I. After a few years of trying I gave up and drifted away from the game. Now I'm back but with family, so I have a weekly group I can rely on for friendly rounds regularly. The big change for me is my attitude toward serious golf. I've learned that is a solo endeavor. Playing a new course now is serious business. I go alone and concentrate on learning the course. I take my camera along and take a photo of each hole from the tee box. If I like the course it goes on my list of places my family can now play. It is easy and fun to go back to a course bringing a group with me.

It ain't bragging if you can do it.

No golfing friends for me either really. I got one buddy that I go with on occasion, but its rare that we have the same time to go, and I occasionally go with my brother, but I get tired of paying for him.

Provided education and experience requirments are met, I hire only rabid golfers with skills or hot women. My best golfing partner has currently worked for me for eight years. My next best is a guy who worked for me for 5 years before moving on, but still calls me all the time to play. We have another guy who's worked for my firm for 15 years and is available whenever you need him though his game isn't up to snuff. Much better than relying on relatives. I have the only two brothers-in-law in the entire Tri-state area who don't play golf and my brother only plays to get away from his wife.

Putters: Scotty Cameron  35" (Several of the flow neck blade variety)

Ball: Bridgestone B330-RX and Srixon Z-Star

Bag: Nike Performance Carry

I have friends who golf but none who are interested/able to play as often as I like to so I go out alone fairly frequently as well. I have a hope that someday I'll find a foursome who wants to play every saturday at 6am.

I mainly play with my dad - he's in his 60's but hits it pretty well and can, of course, putt the eyes out of it like most old guys can even through his stroke is more Arnie than Faxon, if we're talkin' technique.

I used to play a muni by me (Big Met) all the time and used to meet great folks. But, it's one of the most played courses in the state (probably in the country) and a round takes forever there due to excessive traffic and overall slow play. This year, dad and I have a membership at a course so unless I'm playing with him or playing with one of the pros or staff there, I usually play alone. There's some hackers I work with that I've been out with, but I have a hard time playing slow golf.

Next summer, I think I'm joining a league.

    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
