I just found this footage of Obama's swing from 2008: 4:30 min video. A shorter version: 30 second video. Not a great swing. (Insert pot/kettle joke here.) From the instructors/gurus on this site, any advice you'd give to the President on his golf swing? I assume that it has not changed much since the video considering that he's been playing seriously since '97 and he still looks like that. It's not a perfect camera angle, but a couple of the swings are decently close to DTL. The obvious thing I saw was that he straightened his back and almost stood up during his swing. Here's a screenshot from just after impact: Definitely needs to work on hip/torso rotation and leg extension so that he can preserve his inclination to the ground.

He actually gets into a *decent* position at the top, but It's all downhill from there. He seems to be swinging pretty drastically up at the ball.

Yeah, I thought that too. When watching his first swing, after the backswing I was expecting a fairly decent swing.

It's pretty clear that he doesn't think the club will get the ball in the air. If he would start with a few chips, just swinging the club through the ball, then move on to pitches, doing the same, he could be shown that he doesn't have to lift the ball for it to get generously airborne.

It seems just that simple to me. Is it?

I saw this picture on Obama's Facebook page. Like I said earlier, it's not a bad position. His shoulders are a touch flat, but really not all that much. He would probably be over the line if he got to parallel, but not by much. I've never seen a face on view, though.

Odd since I'm sure he gets a ton of lessons from what I'd assume a pretty solid instructor.

His instructor must be terrible.

Waiting out the 2 feet of snow that just dropped on the course....

How much free time would the President of USA have to work on his golf swing?

Not much Zeph.  He is probably just a good athlete and goes with what he has.  Lot's of Presidents have been golfers, but not very good ones.

With all due respect, I don't think Obama is a natural athlete.  Yes, he was on his high school bball team and he's a pretty good player, but  I knew plenty of kids on varsity teams in high school who got in because of hard work much more than raw talent and I think that's Obama.  I'm guessing this from his bowling and baseball first pitch form.  They look a bit awkward and not natural and his jump shot looks a little Reggie Millerish, who was a very good player despite that funny looking release.

While Obama may not have the time to dedicate to practice, I'm sure he gets plenty of free instruction from pros and good players in his foursome, which might be screwing him up because of conflicting opinions.

Sir, If I may speak frankly, I recommend that you adapt the Stack and Tilt pattern and appoint Plummer and Bennett as Special Advisors to the President on the Advancement of Human Assisted Launching of Dimpled Projectiles.

Kill slow play. Allow walking. Reduce ineffective golf instruction. Use environmentally friendly course maintenance.

Obama's a better hoops player than 9/10 Sand Trap posters, and probably a better golfer than half of them.

Apparently he plays at least one round per week.

    • Hitting some good shots on my golf trip. It's good I can tell when I hit better shots the way I want to swing the ball versus when I use an older swing. Shockingly, the short game has been at worst, not harmful to my game. I am using similar feels to the full swing, in that I try to get my hands down. I've been nipping the ball clean off the turf.
    • I was laid off two months ago. Good severance, a 90 day layoff announcement regulation the company wanted to avoid so technically I'm still on the payroll for a few weeks, and a bunch of banked PTO, so I'm in a great spot and working on a startup idea I've been batting around with my brother for a while. That means I've got time to get to the gym! I'm at like 60-75 minutes 5x a week of strength training, and either a run or a bunch of time playing soccer or tennis with my daughter on the weekends. Stronger than I've been in forever. Up ~5 pounds of (noticeable!) muscle!
