Brandel makes a good point that we'll never be able to say that the new swing helped him win additional majors (if he does that is) since he's been there done that . That said, analysts should discuss the pros and cons of making a swing change and leave it at that.

Brandel was doing his job and giving an opinion.  I have zero problem with his comments regarding Tiger.

I find the fact he felt the need to publicly apologize for his Golf Channel comments kind of gross.

From the golfchannel.com, an excerpt:

As for the negativity, in some cases I’m guilty as charged. I cannot as an analyst find reason to compliment a player who abandons proven methods for more pedestrian ones. What if he is ultimately successful in his endeavors to change his swing and win majors? He would end up right where he started, at the cost of time, which is every athlete’s most valuable commodity. Furthermore, it would have cost him considerable wear on a body that has not aged well. All of this makes me question whether it is one of the most confusing things we have seen in golf.

____

Pedestrian ... that is a slap. I don't think that is the correct adjective.

To paraphrase The Princess Bride: He keeps on using that word, but I don't think he knows what it means...

Main Entry: pedestrian
Part of Speech: adjective
Definition: everyday, dull
Synonyms: banal , banausic, blah *, boring , commonplace , dim , dreary , flat , humdrum *, inane , jejune , mediocre , monotone, monotonous , mundane , ordinary , platitudinous, plodding, prosaic , run-of-the-mill, stodgy, truistic, unimaginative, uninspired, uninteresting, wishy-washy

Thing is, Brandel, he wasn't winning majors in 2009 or 2010 with Hank Haney's swing. How "proven" was it really? On the topic of swing changes, I'm inclined to give the benefit of the doubt to the guy with 13 more majors to his credit than you have PGA Tour victories.

It's easy pickings, no doubt. Tiger could win nothing in 2011 and then win the next 12 majors after that and you'd still be able to claim he'd have won 16 if he'd stuck with Hank Haney or gone back to Butch Harmon. It's a bizarre tactic to take, assuming that you know better than Tiger what it takes to compete at his level on the modern PGA Tour... Anything can happen and you can claim victory.

All Tiger's "proven" to me is that he can win majors swinging the club three different ways. Odds are he can do it four different ways, but we owe him six years to compare his record in the majors to find out, don't we?

A bit of a silly way to make my point: Tiger won while hobbling around Torrey Pines on a broken leg. Perhaps since that's a "proven method" Tiger should break his leg and play in tremendous pain all the time. It a "proven" to be effective, after all.

I'm not sure that Tiger's as bright about the golf swing as people give him credit for, but I'm not sure he's as dumb as you seem to think he is either.

What I've seen is that S&T; likes to refer to players' OWGR before, during and, for some strange reason, after being an S&T; devotee. We could graph Tiger before and after Butch, Hank, and Sean Foley. That could tell us if Tiger's on the proper path.

Of course I'm playing devil's advocate, since Tiger was barely knocked out in round 1 at the Accenture, and other than Donald, every guy in the final four had at least one close call. If he'd got past Bjorn, we might have had different champion. Who knows?!?

This isn't an S&T; discussion and how two people choose to support their case has little to no bearing here.

Tiger wouldn't have been in the top 50 in the OWGR is you went on his 2010 results alone. It's only his residual 2009 points which help keep him in the top 10 now. During his prior swing changes, he entered with 15 points or so OWGR. He currently has 6.

I have written a piece for GolfChannel.com that will be up in a few days, that your comments inspired. I hope it answers your questions as to my "negativity".  I wish you well in golf and with every endeavor. It looks as if you have a beautiful family.

Brandel

Well i have to say it is pretty awesome for you to actually write a response on how you feel about the situation. I respect what you wrote and makes alot of sense but i just didnt seem like you wish him well when you talk about him. But everyone is entitled to there own opinion and i guess you cant praise a guy that really isnt playing good golf but for people to question his golfing ability and work ethic after what he is done is mind boggling. He is still very young and has alot of golf ahead of him and we have to give him the benefit of the doubt because he does have 14 majors . But i appreciate you writing something on here to really let us know what you think of Tigers situation without any cameras.

I can assure you it wasn't Sean...no need for any affection...if you hang around long enough you may be able to ascertain certain aspects of the colorful personalities that contribute on a regular basis to this community to help you temper and guide your comments appropriately.

Back to the topic...How often do you openly criticize someone on a forum and then they show up and call you out so to speak to set the record straight?  He handled this thing pretty well and may have picked up a new fan or two.  You have to give him credit for even coming on the Sand Trap.  Let's talk about Johnny Miller now...lol.

Question - If you were able to talk with Nicklaus, what would you talk about?  Whether Stewart Cink will make his next putt for par, or if Kevin Sutherland should hit a low draw or a high hook from behind the tree, or some other "pedestrian" topic?  Or would you seek to somehow gain some insight into the thinking of the man with the greatest record in golf?

Heck, that's why having Miller and Faldo in the announcing booth is so interesting.  They know what they are talking about.  They have been there, and have been successful at the highest level.

That's right. Johnny Miller won the '73 U.S. Open at Oakmont with a 63 on Sunday. And don't you forget it!

i totally agree he gained my respect to actually be worried that much about we people think of him and write a article on it is very nice. He really didnt need to defend himself but for taking the time out to do so is fantastic. I still dont agree with the way he handles im self at times but everyone has there own opinions but what you did was first class and i have to say you really gained some fans.

    • Day 12: Same as last couple days, but focus was on recentering aspect of flow. When I recenter earlier I make decent contact most swings but if I recenter late or not at all it’s a roll of the dice.
    • A couple of things.  Some of the clubs in your bag should be dropped immediately.  A 2-iron for example with what obviously seems to be a lower swing speed or possibly not great swing yet is a definite no-no.  To be hitting that 120-140 yards, which I assume includes run, is a sign that you are not getting the ball airborne at the correct angle to maximise distance.  The reason your 3 and 5 hybrid are going the same distance is that your launch angle is better with the 5.  Loft is your friend. Ideally I would suggest going to a golf or sporting store where you can hit golf balls on a simulator without being disturbed to understand your club carry distances and hopefully swing speed.  With that information we can definitely guide you better.
    • Let us be clear, unless you have proof of cheating, you just sound like a case of sour grapes.  In our club we have a guy who won club titles for many years.  Yes, he was a low single digit handicapper, but there have been quite a few others who played at his level.  Yet his mental strength and experience helped him win in many years when he shouldn't have.  Did he sandbag.  DEFINITELY NOT.  Did he just minimize his mistakes and pull out shots as and when needed.  Definitely.
    • Day 111 - Worked on my grip and higher hands in the backswing. Full swings with the PRGR.
    • First off please forgive me if this is not a proper post or not in the proper location, still learning the ropes around here. Second, it's important that I mention I am very new to the game with only about 10 rounds of golf under my belt, most being 9 holes. Only this year have I started playing 18. That being said, I am hooked, love the game and am very eager to learn and improve. To give you an idea of my skill, the last 2 18 rounds I played were 110 and 105. Not great at all, however I am slowly improving as I learn. Had been having bad slicing issues with the driver and hybrids but after playing some more and hitting the range, I've been able to improve on that quite a bit and have been hitting more straight on average. Irons have always come easier to me as far as hitting straight for some reason. Wedges have needed a lot of improvement, but I practice chipping about 20-30 mins about 3-5 times a week and that's helped a lot. Today I went to the range and started to note down some distance data, mind you I am averaging the distances based off my best guess compared to the distance markers on the range. I do not currently own a range finder or tracker. From reading some similar posts I do understand that filling gaps is ideal, but I am having a some issues figuring out those gaps and understanding which clubs to keep and remove as some gaps are minimal between clubs. Below is an image of the chart I put together showing the clubs and average distances I've been hitting and power applied. For some reason I am hitting my hybrids around the same distances and I am not sure why. Wondering if one of them should be removed. I didn't notice a huge loft difference either. The irons I have are hand me downs from my grandfather and after playing with them a bit, I feel like they're just not giving me what could potentially be there. The feel is a bit hard/harsh and underwhelming if that makes sense and I can't seem to get decent distances from them. Wondering if I should be looking to invest in some more updated irons and if those should be muscle backs or cavity backs? My knowledge here is minimal. I have never played with modern fairway woods, only the classic clubs that are actually wood and much smaller than modern clubs. I recently removed the 4 and 5 woods from my bag as I was never using them and I don't hit them very well or very far. Wondering if I should look into some more modern fairway wood options? I appreciate any feedback or advice anyone is willing to give, please forgive my lack of knowledge. I am eager to learn! Thank you.
