I just found a cool new app (only for iphones sorry android!) that you use for measuring your putting. It clips onto the shaft of your putter and it measures the tempo, face angle and arc angle of your putting stroke. You can do a test and it even gives you a putting handicap showing how consistent you are. The app is free but you have to pay $30 to get the cradle that attaches to your putter shaft. Pretty cool I reckon.

The app was released in the last day or 2 and I downloaded it before to try. I just taped my phone to putter and it was a bit loose so I am not sure on the accuracy of the measurements but I had a few tries and it seems to work fine. Here is a photo of some of the info you can get off it.

Interesting. Seems pretty cool. My only concern would be that my iPhone would add a bunch of extra weight to my putter's shaft and thus negatively affect my stroke, so I'm leery of using it. Did you find that was the case?

Yeah the weight is definately noticeable but I am not sure how it effects the stroke. If you have a smooth putting stroke it shouldn't really change much, although I guess there is no way to tell for sure! Either way its free and should be of help if you want to improve your putting or just see who can get the best score out of your mates!

Yes this is my worry as well. And I hate apple as well so no chance of me getting this until they make an android version.

It looks really cool and will help hacks like myself for sure!  I've spent the better part of this am calling around and looking for one, no one here in the DFW metroplex seems to know what I'm talking about!

If i find one this weekend, I will post a review!!!

Go PING!

What happens when you put it on your wedge and do a full swing?

I ordered the cradle at the Golfsmith store in Frisco on Preston Road by Stonebriar Mall.  You can also order it on the Golfsmith site now and have it delivered to the store to save shipping cost.

Downside is the expected shipping date is not until 7/4.

Thanks BigTex!  That store is close to the casa!  I went into PGA SS and they looked at me like I had two heads when I inquired about it!  I would like it quicker than July 4th however...

Went in there and got the same response.  Hoped to get it quicker myself, but it is what it is.  You must not live to far from me, I am in East Frisco right at the border of McKinney, Allen, and Plano.

You'll be waiting a while cause from what I read the iphone 4 is the only phone that has a gyro and accelerometer that is capable of doing the measurements the iping app does. Apparently no android phones have this yet, I am sure there will be some eventually but till then it will only be on iphone and ipod touch.

Looks cool. I've downloaded it and will probably just jury-rig a mount from an old iphone case.

And I guess now we know what Ping got from Apple in return for the right to use "Ping" as the name for their new wannabe social network in iTunes. Anybody else trying to name a product "iAnything" gets their butt sued off.

Well I went out and tested it for about 30 mins on the practice green at my course yesterday, got really erratic scores doing the 5 putt test, anywhere from 7 up to 26. Today I played and had my worst putting round in over 6 months lol. That enough of an opinion for you?

I bought this case off ebay for a few bucks and cable tied it to my putter. Seemed to work ok and was very stable. I think maybe I should just leave it alone now, I usually average 31-32 putts a round, had 36 today with a chip in. Only a single 1 putt and three 3 putts. I tried to make my stroke slightly different to make the numbers better but I think that is probably the wrong way to go about things.

I think the problem is that you've drawn a direct correlation between using this app and our next round of golf. It may have been a "bad round" irrespective of using the app.

The putting stroke is primarily a 'feel' stroke rather than technique so as long as your pace and direction are the same as you tried to play does it matter if it's a straight back and through, arc or loop the loop?

The thing I find irritating about the app is that the cradle is not available AT ALL here in the UK, yet they still added the app to the app store over here.

    • I think I like this hole.  It is a clear "Risk-Reward" choice.  Since most of the shots in your cone cleared the bunkers I would say they are a minor risk and not a big issue.  Playing the aggressive line may give you 70ish yards in from what looks to be playable rough while conservative play is 120ish from fairway.  I know you said 70 vs 120 is minor for you but how does the approach angle in impact your results?  I figure both strategies are playing for Birdie since holing out from either is mostly luck. Looking at your proximity hole I think it says @ 50 feet when hitting from the fairway from 100-150 and 40 feet if hitting 50-100 from the rough.  Neither of those is an easy birdie putt.   I like the approach angle from the rough between the bunkers & the adjacent tees over the angle from @ 120 in the fairway but I really do not like the idea of hitting onto the adjacent tee boxes and that may impact my confidence with making the shot.  Also, too far left may be a worse approach angle then from the fairway short of the bunkers. For me this may come down to how confident do I feel when I reach that tee box.  If I am stroking it well off the tee leading up to the hole I would try for over the bunkers and the better angle in but if I am struggling that day I would likely opt for the fairway to take more bad stuff out of play.
