i use the nike forged blades, i use to play with the nike pro combos, but they are too forgiving and are hard to work the ball.

One of the few Cobra players...

Recently bought the new Cobra FP's steel stiff. So far so good. Mishits still go straight but not as far. Overall I'm very pleased.

I had been playing with a cheaper set of Adams Tight Lies Irons I bought 4-5 years ago. This past weekend I ordered the Taylormade R7 TP irons and got custom fit. Demoed nearly every club in the store and the R7s seemed to have the perfect blend of feel and forgiveness. I still shoot in the 80s, so some forgiveness on miss-hits is still appreciated, especially in the longer irons.

I just bought a set of X20s to replace my old '94 Big Berttha irons. I can't believe just how big those old '94s are after comparing them to the X20s. Although I never thought they were huge until then. I have played twice with the X20s and I seem to be hitting them better every shot. I'm also struggling a little with how far I'm hitting each club. But I'm happy with the X20s even if I have the '94s sitting in my office .....just in case.

BTW, should I make it a point to have the loft and lie fitted to me with these new irons? I've never done anything like club fitting before. BTW, I'm a hack that plays in the 90s. Anything I can do to get consistant and lower my scores helps.

Cheers!

I had titleist irons myself (until they were stolen out of my trunk). I have been in school and work the last 2 years so haven't had much time to play. I graduate this semester so I'm currently looking at clubs myself. I have tried the titleist, mizuno, and taylormade.

The r7 tp irons were the most forgiving of all the irons, and they had the most "unique" feel as well. The mp-67's were the least forgiving but i was surprised at how forgiving they actually were for a blade. The titleist 735, 755 and mp-60 all felt about the same as far as forgivness, but i could always tell the mizuno club apart from the titleists. I'm not sure which one felt "best" they all had a slightly different feel, but none of them felt bad to me just different. I do like the mp-67's when you hit it clean. You don't even feel the ball. I was also surprised at how close the 735 and 755 felt when i was testing them. Overall i liked the 735s better though.

Soon as i can find a job I'm going to make a purchase and as it stands right now the r7 tp, mp-60 and 735s are my top choices, but I'm not ruling out the mp67s just yet, they hit too sweet. I'm a little rusty and out of shape now, but when i was playing regularly my handicap was about 10. (never got an official handicap)

Quick questions to the guys with the mizuno clubs with the lofts changed. What are the benefits to doing such a thing? (besides increased/decreased distance of course) Did you buy the clubs already changed or did you have them changed after you bought them and played them? If you bought them changed where does a person test out those changes before you buy?

I would highly reccomend it. The place you bought them from should be able to do it for you. I ordered mine fitted, but I have to due to my height. There generally is no charge for that, but if you already bought them, they may not retrofit them for free. It would not hurt to ask. Incorrect lie can cause you to make poor contact and create ball flight issues that may not be caused by your actual swing. It only takes a few minutes for them to check length and lie. If you are investing a few hundred bucks on a set of irons you should get the most out of them.

I'll echo what he said, I bought mine "off the shelf" without thinking about getting fitted. A couple of days afterwards I saw the "free fitting month" of april and thought "Great...I messed up!".

I scheduled a fitting anyways, and I was really lucky. He said my clubs fit me to a T. He threw several different clubs of different lengths on them with the impact tape on and it really showed how the different in length has a big effect on where you hit the ball. I was hitting it close to the heel of the club just about all of the time and he handed me my club back and it was right in the sweet spot most of the time.

This brings up the chicken and the egg question. If someone has been using standard clubs for years and grooves their swing to those specs, would it hurt them to get clubs that "fit"? My specs have been the same for 10+ years, but I wonder if that is due to the fact that I have been swinging clubs with those specs for so long. If someone is making major swing changes, or new to the game, I would absolutely tell them to get fitted. If they are only playing a few times a month and have been using standard clubs for years, the changes may make them struggle at first. In the long run, I still say get fitted.

I spoke with Callaway and a local dealer and it's only going to cost me $35 for a fitting and Callaway said as long as I don't need shafts there will be no charge. I just need to send them in and they will take care of it.

I'm hitting the ball better than I ever have so I don't think they are too far off but I want to be sure.

Thanks.

I had been playing with Callaway X-14s for the past 5-6 years. Just last month I did the Callaway trade in trade up thing for the new Big Bertha irons. I love the wider sole on them. I feel that I can hit a cleaner shot with them. They gave me $210 for my old irons so I ended up paying just over $400 after taxes for the new ones.

I played used Taylor Made irons for a couple of years. I stumbled onto a website that promoted single length irons and woods. They offered a 30 day money back trial. I have to say that these clubs(1 Iron Golf) have cut 8 strokes off my game since last September.

    • Thank you, currently I only had the 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9 irons in the bag. I was never finding myself in a situation to use the 4 and 5 so I dropped those a while ago. The 60W is what I've been practicing with the most in the back yard, but that's only with short chipping. I don't think I've ever practiced hitting my wedges at 80% - 100% apart from yesterday. Maybe I should be doing that more. Generally I would be using a 9 iron if I was out about 75 yards or so. I am not really sure I understand your mention of the 60W and 3H. Aren't these going to be giving me completely different results? Unfortunately I am not able to adjust the loft on the hybrids I have. I looked into the Shot Scope H4 you suggested and this seems really neat and handy, however I am struggling to understand how it works. Am I correct in assuming it doesn't track the ball distance until you hit the ball a second time? Say I drive from the tee and walk up to my ball, tag the next club and hit the ball. Is it at this point when I tag my next club while standing next to my ball that is knows the distance? Thank you, I am going to give the local shop a call and check their prices and see what they can offer.
    • Do you know what their handicaps are? The handicap system isn't perfect and given the higher variance from higher handicaps, I think low handicap players would be expected to win maybe 60% of their matches? I'm not exactly sure what that number is and it will vary with the handicap difference, but if they're generally very low handicaps, then they might be at 60% likely to win a game. Given it's 16 vs 16, that's a lot of games to win. If it's 60%, then that's around an 80% chance that they'll win a given match. At 80% chance of winning, 21 wins in a row is about 1 in 108 times. Pretty unlikely, but not unheard of. It's pretty sensitive to what that individual win percentage is too. If it's 65%, then 21 wins is about 1 in 9. If it's 55%, then 21 wins is 1 in about 5,700. Clearly it's not as simple as this because that win likelihood is going to change match to match as they play lower handicap teams or higher handicap teams, but I don't think it's a "yes they're cheating" thing at all.
    • I'll be honest, the only reason the 2 iron was in my bag is because I tend to hit the ball into the tree's fairly often. And I was using it to help me keep the ball very low to get out of the tree's while avoiding getting much loft to hit branches. I guess I can drop the 3H as well. Would it be wise to give a higher loft fairway wood a try as well, something like a 26 degree? I believe there is only one golf shop where I live that has a golf simulator and trainer. I see they offer free fitting with a purchase from the fitter. I'll have to check how much they charge without a purchase, I've read a few stories about fitters on this forum that just wanted to sell the person the most expensive clubs and that kind of deters me a bit. They do offer lessons as well. I'll give them a call and ask them a bit more about these services. Thank you!
    • Here is a description of all the programs:  Programs & Training Programs and Training TheStack is a personal swing-speed trainer for golfers. Initially, each golfer is piloted through a series of swing speed tests to generate a force-velocity profile of their current swing. Qualitative data is... I think cruiser is meant for maintaining speed and flex can do more than that. But I'm just basing that on the descriptions that I linked.
    • Both @DaveP043 and I play in our interclub matches every year, and have been team Captains as well.  There are always a few courses, mine is one, that win a lot of matches (we've won twice in the last 7 years), and we've been labeled as sandbaggers.  However, I really think that our course was rated too low (our greens just never seemed to get factored in enough), and thus our Handicaps were always a stroke or maybe 2 above, what they would've been if the course was rated higher.  And then when we went and played other courses, their slope and rating were much higher than ours, and sometimes I would get a 2 or 3 stroke bump on top of that.  It was definitely an advantage.  However, this past year, our course was rated again and the slope has gone up, so we'll see if we continue to have the same benefit.  Season starts this Sunday for us.
