In a few threads folks have mentioned that there have been changes in the pattern since the DVD and book. I have both and wonder if there is a place on the internet that explains the differences... If not could those in the know explain them here?

My impression from reading between the lines here and elsewhere is that Mike and Andy are currently doing some more DVDs and that other folks in the S&T; camp who are in the know, broadly, about the direction they're taking the pattern don't want to steal their thunder by talking about the details before the new series comes out.

Yeah, I left a specific question asking exactly this in the golfwrx forums and no answer, not even acknowledgement, but I understand that they need to sell their new ideas.

The only thing I'd want to suggest is that DVDs are so last decade. Make the format in a video file we can buy. Yeah, I know, piracy. OK, instead, maybe a password protected streaming page? Or an iPad app. Anyways, don't make me buy physical media is all I'm asking.

As you can suspect I have to be careful about what I can say, but the new DVDs are - broadly speaking - more "proof" oriented than "change in pattern" oriented. The pattern is still ver similar to what they've always taught. They've fine tuned some pieces by providing more information, but the DVDs are more "proof" - with what I'll call "numbers" or "data" to prove some things for the purpose of being vague.

Some of us have slightly changed a few things - for example hitting up on the driver, or shifting the left arm out a little bit if you want to hit a cut, or whatever - but they're all based on the same "pattern" that hasn't really changed much itself.

I was going to ask this very question in another post as the Golf Evolution video on hitting the driver favored hitting down a degree or two.

Yeah, and that's still one way to do it.

Hopefully Erik is helping with the video editing, assuming his video editing skills are on par with his web design skills. Every time I have the Stack and Tilt DVD's on my wife says "oh the golf nerds again!"

What!!! You are supposed to be hitting up on the driver??? I am having unbelievable success hitting down a degree or two... I feel doing this keeps my irons, hybrids and woods on a similar swing...

The current DVDs are dreadful, from a presentation perspective. Would be pretty much impossible for the new ones not to be more accessible and, dare we say, entertaining.

If you want more distance.. yes! My natural swing is -1 to +1 and no matter what I do I cannot seem to get a more positive AoA. I start catching the ball thin if I start hitting up on it and pulling it if I move the ball forward in my stance.

And you've had it measured by a Trackman or something? Because otherwise you're just guessing.

I'm not involved with the production of any DVDs with Mike and Andy in them.

My last (5) measured by Trackman were between -1 and -2... I think hitting up on the driver is a mistake and I'm not sure why they would change their philosophy.

Hitting up on the driver goes farther and has been proven many times.  Think this is why they are changing that.

    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
