Whether you love him or hate him, you have to admit that David Feherty comes up with some pretty good one liners.    Reading about a couple of his this week at the PGA made me think about listing some of his good ones - please add your own.

  • Referring to Rory's wrist injury:   "Fortunately he is 22 years old, so his right wrist should be the strongest muscle in his body"
  • Commenting on John Daly's pants:   "They're why the Hubble telescope is pointed away from the earth."
  • On Jim Furyk's swing:  "It looks like a man trying to kill a snake in a phone booth"
  • Also on Jim Furyk's swing:  "It looks like an octopus falling out of a tree"
  • "That one is so far right Michael Moore could make a documentary about it."
  • Describing Tommy Gainey's grip: "They look like two lobsters trying to mate."
  • At the Tavistock Cup:  "I am sorry Nick Faldo couldn't be here this week. He is attending the birth of his next wife."
  • At the Bridgestone, McCord commented "Does anyone wear a shirt tighter than Ishikawa?" and other announcer's added names "Villegas, Charles Howell III...." Feherty added:  "Sometimes Phil does."
  • Commenting about VJ Singh's legendary practice sessions:  "He's hit more balls than Elton John's chin"
  • After eating some spicy food: "There will be some yodeling going on when this re-enters the atmosphere"

LOL!

I remember watching coverage when Feherty said some of those lines...I can't help but laugh.

I think Gary McCord wished he were as witty as Feherty, but I can't stand him trying.

Was Woods trying to take a divot with his putter or something...? :-P [edit] Wrong thread....

I'm actually reading "The Power of Positive Idiocy" right now by him, it's really just a collection of his articles at the back of Golf Magazine, but I'm surprised at even the stuff they let him publish a lot of the stuff he writes for the magazine haha. My mom will walk by and start laughing so hard she snorts half the time Feherty opens his mouth :P

love that guy - he has the greatest one liners in the sports world.      I remember when Rory had his big win & was way out in front & dropped a stroke ... he said, well Rory finally displayed an act of kindness towards his fellow competitors - LOL !!!

He is very funny and it's a refreshing change to the monotone announcers.  I really like his show too.

I really like his occasional politically incorrect comments.  It's almost refreshing.  If nothing else, he spreads the "wealth" and isn't politically incorrect towards any one person or thing in particular.  I think I'll coin a new(?) phrase.....Unbiased Political Incorrectness.  You heard it here first....I think.

This is something I picked up somewhere a few years ago.  I don't know when the tournament was, but I'm thinking late 90's or so.

David Feherty on Tiger Woods

Ultimate peer respect...

"People have accused me of being so far up Tiger's arse that he can barely make a full swing, but I maintain that he is a special person. There's no one else on the planet who can do what he does or even think of doing what he does. I've often thought, instead of showing Tiger's reaction to a shot he's hit, we really should show the reaction of those around him."

But here is the next best thing.

"I'm walking down the 18th fairway at Firestone Country Club with Ernie Els and Tiger, who has popped up a three-wood about 40 yards behind Ernie into some wet, nasty, horrible, six-inch rough," Feherty says.  "Tiger's cursing and taking clumps out of Ohio with his three-wood. And, of course, we're not showing this on TV because we want to be able to interview him later. Ernie and I walk past Tiger's ball, and it is truly buried.

"Ernie is tied with Tiger and he's in the middle of the fairway. I'm standing with Ernie and my microphone is open. Ken Venturi [in the CBS booth] sends it to me and I say, 'Tiger's got 184 yards with two big red oaks overhanging the green. He's got absolutely nothing. With a stick of dynamite and a sand wedge I might be able to move this ball 50 yards.  Steve Williams [Woods' caddie] tells me [with a hand signal] that he's using a pitching wedge.'

"Tiger takes his swing. Every muscle in his body is flung at the ball. It looks like he's torn his nutsack. The divot went as far as I could hit the ball. I've got my microphone at my mouth thinking, what the hell was that! The ball sails over the trees, lands behind the hole and backs up to about six feet from the flag. I open my microphone and Ernie turns and says, 'F*** me!'

"My producer comes on in my earpiece and says, 'Was that Ernie?' I say yes. He says, 'Fair enough.'

"I could have described that shot for 15 minutes and not done as good a job as Ernie did with two words. This is the second best player in the world talking, and you wanna know how good Tiger is? Ask Ernie Els."

I think Feherty is like the PGA tour version of Wayne Riley over here. Radar came up with a great one the other day, a golfer (cant remember who it was) played a pitch onto the green but played it poorly. He said 'and alas, that is now the call of the dead sheep, still you'

Wayne Riley is hilarious. The things he says off air are even better. He would chat away with the crowd between shots and say some hilarious things.

    • Makes sense.  Like I said, I wouldn't have been upset at their original offer either, and based on the fine print it seems like they've held up their end of the deal.
    • If you've only had to adjust retroactively one time in 8 years and have around 5 people each year without handicaps, that's like 40-50 people total so it sounds like you're doing a pretty good job. I think your questions give enough to go off of. This might be a good way to get new people to actually post a few scores during the 6 weeks leading into the first event. Something like "New members will be eligible for tournament money once they have at least 3 posted rounds in GHIN" or something like that. If they can get 3 rounds in prior to their first event, then they're eligible. If not, they'll soon become eligible after an event or two assuming they play a little bit outside of events.
    • This is a loooooong winded narrative so if you don't like long stories, move on. 😉 Our senior club typically gets about 25 new members each year. We lose about 25 members each year for various reasons (moved to FL/AZ, disabled, dead, too expensive). Of the new members, usually 20 have an active GHIN handicap. About 5 each year do not have a GHIN handicap. When they join our club, we give each member a state association membership that includes GHIN handicapping services. We play a series of handicapped tournaments over the summer. When we sign up a new member who does not have a GHIN handicap, we attempt to give them an estimated index until they have sufficient scores posted to have an actual GHIN index.  Our first event typically is around May 15 so, in theory, a new member has about 6 weeks to post a few scores. Posting season in the Mitten starts April 1. Inevitably, several of the unhandicapped individuals seem  to either not play until the first tournament or can't figure out how to enter scores (hey, they are seniors). That situation then leads to my contacting the new member and asking a series of questions: a. Did you ever have a GHIN handicap? If yes, which State and do you recall what it was? b. Do you have an alternate handicap through a non-GHIN handicap service or a league? c. What do you think your average score was last year (for 9 or 18) d. What was your best score last year? Where did you play and which tee was used? e. What do you consider a very good score for yourself? Based on their responses I attempt to give them an index that makes them competitive in the first couple events BUT does not allow them to win their flight in the first couple events. We don't want the new members to finish last and at the same time, we don't want someone with a "20" playing handicap to win the third flight with a net 57. In the event some new member did shoot a net 57, we also advise everyone that we can and will adjust handicaps retroactively when it is clear to us that a member's handicap does not accurately reflect their potential. We don't like to adjust things retroactively and in the 8 years I have chaired the Handicap Committee, we have only done it once. So here are the questions to the mob: Any ideas how to do this better? Any questions one might ask an unhandicapped individual to better estimate their index/handicap? Would it be reasonable to have a new player play once (or more?) without being eligible to place in the money?
