We were up that way in October. You're welcome to come to Erie any time, as our indoor facility is great for learning AimPoint. You can stay and hit balls or use the simulator or whatnot the whole weekend.

I thought about coming down earlier actually when I saw that facility on your website, it looks awesome!  But since AimPoint seems to require some practice to really get moving with it, I thought it best to wait until I can go right out onto a course at home to work with it while the lessons were fresh in my head.

That's the plan anyway.  We'll see how long that lasts over the winter.  I'm already feeling the golf itch and it's only mid-January!

It does help to practice it outside on an actual green, yes, even if you do practice for a little bit inside first. We'll see you in, what, March then? :)

So I know nothing of Aimpoint other than what I've read on a few threads here, but I gotta say it sounds as intriguing as heck to me.  I am an engineer (read: nerd) so the idea of reading greens using charts and math and whatever else you guys get from these classes is getting me excited.  (And I stink at reading greens)

Now my question:  Are these classes a one day thing or a series?  (Since the nearest instructor is 90 minutes away from me, I'm hoping they do one day classes)

Thanks!

It's a single 2-2.5 hour class.

You don't really "use math" but it's based on math and physics so it's accurate.

Aimpoint is easy and it works--very effective at reducing 3 putts. You aren't going to "make everything", but you won't completely miss read a putt; so if you approximate the correct speed, you'll be close. By analyzing the break on the initial putt and then watching the ball curve toward the relative middle of the hole, if you have a second putt, you have a lot of confidence making the short one.

  • 1 year later...

I took my Aimpoint class last year with Erik and Dave when they came out to Socal ... in September, I think, and have wanted to post in this thread since.  I have been using it for almost 10 months now and its really starting to make a big difference for me.  Over the course of my last 5 rounds, I have averaged 1.7 putts/hole, and 1.8 putts/GIR.  I am also averaging over 2 birdies per round over that stretch, and I have made at least one long putt (25 feet or more) in each of those rounds as well.  I'm also noticing that the putts that are missing are also a heck of a lot closer too, burning edges or close to it, and leaving tap-ins for my second putt more often.

The big thing, however, is that I'm starting to gain more confidence in reading the green with my feet.  It sounds silly, but my I'm getting a lot better at noticing subtle things all the time.  Not just while doing my midpoint read, for example, but as I'm walking to and from the hole, I'm noticing how it feels (as if I'm walking slightly up or downhill, for example) a lot better.  And its a snowball effect.  I make a couple of good reads, then my stroke becomes more confident, then I become even more confident in my reading ability, and then I expect I'm going to #make everything!

I'm finally starting to really love me some Aimpoint!!

I agree with what you have said.  Pacing out the distance is a critical information gathering step.  I also pace out chips and pitches where possible because there is so much information to be gained.  I get some interesting comments on "the book".  I got a leather score card holder to protect it a bit. Well worth the time and money.

Trust your feet and read.  As you get more comfortable, that read will be more accurate.  Don't second guess it.  When you do, you will miss and regret the change.  Speed is the real key to success.  Your reads will be right on target.

    • First off please forgive me if this is not a proper post or not in the proper location, still learning the ropes around here. Second, it's important that I mention I am very new to the game with only about 10 rounds of golf under my belt, most being 9 holes. Only this year have I started playing 18. That being said, I am hooked, love the game and am very eager to learn and improve. To give you an idea of my skill, the last 2 18 rounds I played were 110 and 105. Not great at all, however I am slowly improving as I learn. Had been having bad slicing issues with the driver and hybrids but after playing some more and hitting the range, I've been able to improve on that quite a bit and have been hitting more straight on average. Irons have always come easier to me as far as hitting straight for some reason. Wedges have needed a lot of improvement, but I practice chipping about 20-30 mins about 3-5 times a week and that's helped a lot. Today I went to the range and started to note down some distance data, mind you I am averaging the distances based off my best guess compared to the distance markers on the range. I do not currently own a range finder or tracker. From reading some similar posts I do understand that filling gaps is ideal, but I am having a some issues figuring out those gaps and understanding which clubs to keep and remove as some gaps are minimal between clubs. Below is an image of the chart I put together showing the clubs and average distances I've been hitting and power applied. For some reason I am hitting my hybrids around the same distances and I am not sure why. Wondering if one of them should be removed. I didn't notice a huge loft difference either. The irons I have are hand me downs from my grandfather and after playing with them a bit, I feel like they're just not giving me what could potentially be there. The feel is a bit hard/harsh and underwhelming if that makes sense and I can't seem to get decent distances from them. Wondering if I should be looking to invest in some more updated irons and if those should be muscle backs or cavity backs? My knowledge here is minimal. I have never played with modern fairway woods, only the classic clubs that are actually wood and much smaller than modern clubs. I recently removed the 4 and 5 woods from my bag as I was never using them and I don't hit them very well or very far. Wondering if I should look into some more modern fairway wood options? I appreciate any feedback or advice anyone is willing to give, please forgive my lack of knowledge. I am eager to learn! Thank you.
    • I would think that 3 in a row with the same players might get some behind the scenes examination from the SCGA if they were suspect.  Are there any clubs questioning the results?
    • What simple fact? A golf match is not a coin flip — there is a fact for you. I'm trying to help you, and you're throwing out what could easily be called sour grapes. Come with FACTS, not weak analogies. Then you've got nothing. Hopefully they've done a better job of making their case. 😛
    • It's pretty close. The odds of a 50/50 shot going your way 21 times are greater than 1 in a million!  I guess your point is, that simple fact is not enough to declare these guys dirty rotten sandbaggers. I disagree, but fair enough. I posted it here on the message board to get different perspectives, after all.  I probably won't be digging further into specific scores. I have no dog in this fight beyond a generalized contempt for sandbagging. With that said, it would not surprise if a lot of clubs shared my concern and were grousing about it to the SCGA.
    • I had an article on Cam Smith pop up along with this..... Current major eligibility list for all LIV Golf players Here's a look at which majors, if any, all LIV Golf players are eligible.
